Celebration of Confirmation

Thursday, October 24 th 4:00 PM

77 Students being confirmed!

Bishop Robert Maginnis will preside at the Liturgy of Confirmation on Thursday, October 24 th at 4:00 PM. There are 43 students in our School, 23 in our CCD and 1 of our parishioners in Nazareth Academy who will be confirmed. (During the 1st Confirmation ceremony in Saint Anselm Church on March 9 1965, 704 students were confirmed by Bishop McDevitt.)

Our Confirmandi began their immediate preparation for Confirmation one year ago. With the guidance of their teachers and catechists, they made a serious study of Confirmation. When they announced their candidacy for Confirmation this past spring, they said that they wanted to become better friends with Jesus. They also accepted the challenge to do the study, prayer and service necessary so that they would be spiritually prepared for Confirmation.

Our Confirmandi have scrutinized their lives. They prayed, asking Jesus to help them see what is right and good within them, so that the Holy Spirit may strengthen these qualities; they also prayed to know what is weak, defective or sinful in them so that the Holy Spirit will heal, strengthen and make these things right within them.

They have celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation regularly and have received Holy Communion frequently. Our candidates spent a day in retreat at the shrine of Saint Katharine Drexel. The retreat helped them see how the Holy Spirit was at work in Saint Katharine Drexel – a confirmed Christian. These candidates, imitating the charity of many in this faith community, provide for the poor and serve those in need throughout the year.

A few weeks ago in September, these candidates celebrated a rite of election for Confirmation. They heard God electing – choosing, selecting them to be a person in whom the Spirit of Jesus would dwell. On Thursday, they are responding to the call by becoming confirmed followers of Jesus.

Let us rejoice and give thanks for the Holy Spirit of God at work among us in our Confirmandi. Please remember them in your prayers.

Used Eye Glasses & Cell PhonesThank you to those who have been helping

the Lions Club in their effort to provide eyeglasses for the Visually Impaired. Used eyeglasses may be placed in receptacle in the Church vestibule. The Lions Club tries to provide eyeglasses especially for those who can’t afford them.

Used cell phones are also collected by the Lions Club to help the disabled who can’t afford them.

Block Collection & Census EnvelopeThe Block Collection is an important source

of revenue for the parish. Updating the census is very important for our statistical reports and programming. Please return as soon as possible. Thank you.

#1-016Eagle Scout Kevin Edward Berk

Last Sunday, our Boy Scout Troop 246 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Kevin Berk. Kevin, a parishioner of Saint Anselm Parish, is the son of Kim and Paul Berk.

Kevin has earned the merits and the title that distinguishes him as an eagle scout. Kevin is a fine young man. Congratulations, Kevin. We are proud of you.

Youth Mentoring ProgramOur Youth Mentoring Program invites the

youth of our parish to share their gifts, to apply their Catholic faith to their daily lives, and to develop a strong personal relationship with Jesus.

Actively participating in Church ministry can change the life of a young person. This happens when adults take part in ministry with our youth, and our young people are given an opportunity to lead.

As adults, we have the responsibility of making our young people feel welcome. We need to work with them - side by side, encourage them, and give them a voice in our parish community.

Our youth, in Grades 8 thru 12, are invited to participate in our Parish as:LectorsCARES (After School Program)Mass for the Deceased ParishionersChristmas BazaarChurch Decoration

(Thanksgiving, Advent & Christmas)Thanksgiving LiturgyParish Advent Penance ServiceLive Nativity Tableau (Christmas Eve)

These activities will also satisfy “community service” obligations at school. If you would like to participate in any of the activities listed above, you can also call Mrs. Eileen Hiller at 215-637-6336 or Fr. Dunleavy.

October CountAt all weekend Masses throughout the month

of October, the number of people attending Mass will be counted. This October Count is being conducted in cooperation with the Archdiocesan Office for Research and Planning. The count will be taken during the first collection.

The Absence of Father FitzgeraldThe absence of Father Fitzgerald has created

a void. Father Fitzgerald, supposedly retired, has been active and present in our midst for the last nine years. Father served as Spiritual Director for the Legion of Mary (both the Praesidium and Curia), facilitated the Breaking Open the Word Scripture study and reflection on Saturday mornings, celebrated Sunday and daily Masses, heard confessions, visited the homebound on our Communion Call list, served on the Board for Blessed Margaret Home, offered spiritual direction, solace, and comfort to all who confided in him.

Father Fitzgerald’s absence constantly reminds us how blessed we were with his priestly presence.

7:00 PM Sunday Evening Mass & 6:30 AM Daily Mass to be discontinued for the time being

Until further notice, the 7:00 PM Sunday evening Mass will be discontinued at the end of October. There will be a 7:00 PM Sunday evening Mass next Sunday, October 27th. After that date, it will be discontinued. The 6:30 Mass will be discontinued after November 2nd.

The Sunday Mass schedule will be 5:00 PM Vigil Mass; 8:00 AM; 10:00 AM; 12:00 Noon. Father Dunleavy and Father Friel will celebrate two of these Masses.

Remembering Deceased Police Officers, Firefighters and Paramedics – Saint Anselm Church has a custom of commemorating those police officers, firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty or by other causes. Anyone who would like one of these persons prayed for by name is asked to call the Parish Center. A commemoration of these people will be done during the 8:00 AM Mass on Saturday, November 2nd. Remembering those who died this past year and whose funerals were at Saint Anselm – There will be a commemoration of these people on Monday, November 4th during the 7:00 PM Mass. The names of these people will be recorded in a special book that will be placed in a remembrance area that will be set up in the Church during the month of November.

Vincentian Message…

In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples to pray always without becoming weary. Indeed our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world and, especially, for the suffering poor.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent DePaul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.

Thank you from the Society of St. Vincent dePaul!

“On behalf of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul, Philadelphia Council, please accept our sincere appreciation for your partnership in holding a Clothing Drive at your parish.

Your committed partnership in this outreach is such an importance to the Society and our thousands of local clients. Without the support of business partners such as yourself, needs would certainly go unfulfilled during the long winter months.

To the entire ‘Saint Anselm’ Family we thank you for your continued generosity! Together, we are truly a worldwide partnership of men and women-aware and involved in the service of the poor.”
