Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Esta semana contemplamos el misterio mismo de Dios porque celebramos la Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Al hacerlo miramos directamente a la naturaleza y la esencia de Dios, una tarea que no es nada fácil. Sin embargo, lo podemos hacer con confianza porque Dios mismo se ha revelado a nosotros.

Podemos saber muchas cosas sobre Dios utilizando los poderes de nuestra inteligencia. Los filósofos griegos de la antigüedad lle-garon a la conclusión a través de la inferencia racional y la lógi-ca que existe una y solo una fuente de la existencia. Solamente a través de la auto-comunicación y revelación de Dios podemos llegar a saber la cosa más importante que sabemos acerca de Dios, que Dios es Amor y que hay tres personas en El.

San Agustín nos ofrece las mayores intuiciones y desarrollo de la teología trinitaria en toda la historia del pensamiento. Dado que Dios es amor, se ama a sí mismo primero, pero el amor de Dios por sí mismo, a diferencia de mucho de lo que se presenta como amor en nuestro tiempo, no es narcisista, sino que auténticamente extático, amor en éxtasis. El amor de Dios no es un simple sen-timiento sino que es una eterna auto-donación. Dios Padre es el amante, Dios Hijo es el amado y el vínculo de amor que une eter-namente al que ama con el amado, el Espíritu Santo, es tan real que es propiamente una persona.

Puesto que toda la creación es producto del amor de Dios, la iniciativa de Dios que es amor, toda ella contiene “vestigios trin-itarios”, dice San Agustín. Las marcas del amor de Dios, de la presencia de Dios que es amor, se divisan por todas partes. Eso es lo que nos quiere decir el salmo que rezamos en la Misa este domingo: ¡Oh Señor nuestro Dios que admirable es tu nombre ten toda la tierra!

El beato Juan Pablo II veía en la familia humana un ícono de la Trinidad. El amor del marido y la mujer unidos en matrimonio, que como dijo en varias oportunidades el Papa emérito Benedicto XVI es la forma más exaltada del amor humano, no solamente es único e inigualable sino que refleja de manera especial a la Santísima Trinidad porque es amor total, irrevocable, fecundo y fiel que lleva en sí mismo la posibilidad de literalmente generar nueva vida. No hay otra forma de amor humano que remotamente se compare a éste. Por eso, Juan Pablo II, decía que el matrimonio, que es una institución que pertenece al orden natural sobre la que se funda la familia es, en cierta medida, una representación de la Santísima Trinidad.

La Santísima Trinidad no es un dogma obscuro sin relevan-cia para nuestra vida diaria. Tiene consecuencias directas para nuestras vidas porque es la realidad de Dios mismo. Dios es Amor, por eso mismo está en una relación, en primer lugar consigo mis-mo y luego con toda su creación que es producto de su amor y, por lo tanto, participa de su ser. Por eso Dios actúa en la historia hu-mana. ¡Actúa en nuestra historia personal también! En las últimas semanas hemos estado contemplando la acción del Dios trino en la historia humana celebrando el misterio Pascual y Pentecostés. Los

teólogos usan la expresión “Trinidad económica” para referirse a la acción de Dios en la historia humana, el ser de Dios en relación a sus criaturas mientras que utilizan la expresión “Trinidad inma-nente” para referirse a la vida interior de Dios. Este Dios que es a la vez inmanente y trascendente, que es uno y en quien hay tres personas es el que adoramos cada vez que venimos a Misa, de hecho cada vez que comenzamos nuestra oración con la señal de la cruz. ¡Es este Dios Trinitario quien nos invita a participar en su vida de relación para toda la eternidad!

La beata Isabel de la Trinidad, una monja carmelita, tuvo grandes intuiciones sobre la Santísima Trinidad que las resume en su oración que ofrezco a continuación alentándolos a rezarla durante el día de hoy.

“¡Oh Dios mío, trinidad adorable, ayúdame a olvidarme por en-tero para establecerme en ti!

¡Oh mi Cristo amado, crucificado por amor! Siento mi impo-tencia y te pido que me revistas de ti mismo, que identifiques mi alma con todos los movimientos de tu alma; que me sustituyas, para que mi vida no sea más que una irradiación de tu propia vida. Ven a mí como adorador, como reparador y como salvador...

¡Oh fuego consumidor, Espíritu de amor! Ven a mí, para que se haga en mi alma una como encarnación del Verbo; que yo sea para él una humanidad sobreañadida en la que él renueve todo su misterio.Y tú, ¡oh Padre!, inclínate sobre tu criatura; no veas en ella más que a tu amado en el que has puesto todas tus complacencias.

¡Oh mis tres, mi todo, mi dicha, soledad infinita, inmensidad en que me pierdo! Me entrego a vos como una presa; sepultaos en mi para que yo me sepulte en vos, en espera de ir a contemplar en vuestra luz el abismo de vuestras grandezas.”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This week we contemplate the mystery of God himself, we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity. We are looking directly at the nature and the essence of God, not an easy thing to do. However, we can do it confidently because God has revealed himself to us.

There are many things we can know about God through the power of reason. The ancient Greek philosophers were able to determine through rational inference that there was one and only one source of all being. But it is only through divine self-com-munication and revelation that we can come to know the most important thing we know about God, namely that God is Love and that there are three persons in him.

St. Augustine offers us the greatest insights and breakthroughs in Trinitarian theology. Because God is Love, he loves himself first, but the love God professes for himself, unlike much of what passes for love in our age, is not narcissistic, it is truly ecstatic love. The love of God is not just a feeling but an eternal self-donation. God the Father is the lover, God the Son is the beloved and the bond of love eternally uniting lover and beloved, the Holy Spirit, is so real that it is a person.

Because all of creation is the product of the love of God, the initiative of a God who is love, all of it carries “vestiges of the Trinity”, says St. Augustine. The marks of the love of God, of the presence of God who is love are everywhere. That is the point that the responsorial Psalm we prayed at Mass this Sunday is trying to make for us: O Lord, our God, how majestic your love throughout the earth!

Blessed John Paul II saw in the human family an icon of the Trinity. The love of husband and wife united in marriage, which Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI often referred to as the most ex-alted form of human love, is not only unique but also mirrors in a most special way the Blessed Trinity because it is total, ir-revocable, fruitful and faithful love that has the potentiality to literally beget new life. No other form of human love remotely compares to it. Thus, John Paul, maintained that marriage which is a natural institution on which the family is grounded is a rep-resentation of the Holy Trinity.

The Blessed Trinity is not an obscure dogma without implica-tions for our life. It has direct consequences because it is the reality of God himself. God who is love, who because of that is in a relationship, first and foremost with himself and then with his creation which is the product of his love and thus, participates in his very being. For that reason, God acts in human history. He is at work in our personal histories too! For the last couple of weeks we have been contemplating the action of the Trinitarian God in human history by looking at the Paschal mystery and Pentecost. Theologians use the expression “Economic Trinity” to refer to the action of God in human history, the being of God in rela-tion to his creatures, whereas they use the expression “Immanent Trinity” to refer to the inner life of God. It is this one God both immanent and transcendent, who is one, in whom there are three persons that we worship every time we come to Mass, indeed

every time we begin our prayers with the sign of the Cross. It is this One Trinitarian God whose life we are invited to share for all eternity!

Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, a Carmelite nun, had great in-sights on the Blessed Trinity which are summarized in her prayer that I encourage you to pray throughout this day.“O my God, Trinity whom I adore; help me to forget myself en-tirely that I may be established in You as still and as peaceful as if my soul were already in eternity. May nothing trouble my peace or make me leave You, O my Unchanging One, but may each min-ute carry me further into the depths of Your mystery. Give peace to my soul; make it Your heaven, Your beloved dwelling and Your resting place. May I never leave You there alone but be wholly present, my faith wholly vigilant, wholly adoring, and wholly sur-rendered to Your creative Action.

O my beloved Christ, crucified by love, I wish to be a bride for Your Heart; I wish to cover You with glory; I wish to love You...even unto death! But I feel my weakness, and I ask You to "clothe me with Yourself," to identify my soul with all the movements of Your Soul, to overwhelm me, to possess me, to substitute yourself for me that my life may be but a radiance of Your Life. Come into me as Adorer, as Restorer, as Savior.

O Eternal Word, Word of my God, I want to spend my life in listening to You, to become wholly teachable that I may learn all from You. Then, through all nights, all voids, all helplessness, I want to gaze on You always and remain in Your great light. O my beloved Star, so fascinate me that I may not withdraw from Your radiance.

O consuming Fire, Spirit of Love, "come upon me," and create in my soul a kind of incarnation of the Word: that I may be another humanity for Him in which He can renew His whole Mystery. And You, O Father, bend lovingly over Your poor little creature; "cover her with Your shadow," seeing in her only the "Beloved in whom You are well pleased."

O my Three, my All, my Beatitude, infinite Solitude, Immensity in which I lose myself, I surrender myself to You as Your prey. Bury Yourself in me that I may bury myself in You until I depart to contemplate in Your light the abyss of Your greatness.”
