This Sunday the Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost. It is an ancient Jewish feast that became the occasion of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Church nine days following the ascension of our Lord to heaven. Scripture records that He first descended upon the Apostles and Mary in the upper room and then into the hearts of all the faithful through the gift of Baptism. The life of the Holy Spirit blossoms within us through the laying on of hands at the sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Spirit animates the life of the Church both individually and collectively. The Holy Spirit brings the Sacraments among us and reforms each Christian’s life who is open to his transforming power. Where in your life and mine is

the Holy Spirit calling us to take a step forward in the life of grace? This weekend begins our opportunity to receive Holy Communion outside of the celebration of the Mass. A powerful gift in these pandemic times. Reception of the Most Holy Eucharist unites us with the risen and ascended Lord. The reception of Holy Communion gives grace for the soul and heals our wounds. It is a tangible encounter with Jesus. I encourage you to prepare by participating in some form of virtual Mass or by prayerfully reading the holy scriptures for Sunday. These are unique times that call for focused preparation. Patience with the providential care of God in all of this helps our hearts press forward and not lose hope. You are also encouraged to participate in the Sacrament of Confession which will be offered every Saturday morning at 9:30 AM until my regular mass schedule is restored. Confessions will be heard near the statue of Mary in our grotto. I encourage you to keep a profound distance so as not to overhear conversations being said. As much as I look forward to seeing you, we cannot visit long. Please also keep an appropriate space from each other so as to decrease any anxiety. In case of rain, I will hear confessions in Bishop Hall. I encourage you to enter through the door near the Mary grotto. If you have not seen the Mary grotto as of late, it is full of flowers of all colors. Very beautiful! Stop by and offer a prayer for our St. Bernard community. This Tuesday is the virtual graduation of our 8th grade class of Saint Bernard School. This is a trying time for all our graduates. If you know of any graduates, reach out to them and congratulate them. This is a great opportunity to be especially generous to strengthen their disappointed hearts. We have all learned new things about ourselves in the midst of the pandemic. Pray that our 8th grade graduates and all graduates rise to the occasion to be people rooted now more than ever in things that are eternal and not so much the things of earth. Pray for them to be even more great! Congratulations to all our graduates. Lastly, continued thanks for your generosity to the parish. This whole experience will come to an end and I look for-ward to thanking you in person. Your generosity and faith assures that our parish will be waiting for you when we all return. Many thanks for your prayers for each other and for me. A blessed Feast of Pentecost to all of you! Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful with your love. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

PENTECOST SUNDAY PAGE 3

Spirit & Life Pentecost Sunday “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7 To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit to guide3 your thoughts, words, and actions every day! Be grateful for all the gifts God has given you! Regardless of our individual circumstances. God has given all of us many blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift back to God! By generously sharing everything we have and everything we are, we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered” and our lives truly reflect God’s light, love and mercy.

St. Bernard School By: Crystal Blahnik, School Principal For the St. Bernard School community, the last eight weeks have brought new ways of continuing ministry and faith life. With a genuine commitment to faith as the central aspect of the school community, both Principal Crystal Blahnik and Pastor, Fr. Mark VanderSteeg have been using Facebook to engage with school and parish families. Fr. Mark has covered such topics as Marian Apparitions, Super-Mother Saints, Icons, Church Symbols and the Spiritual Works of Mercy. Not only are the students participating in daily religion lessons with their classrooms teachers, but Fr. Mark's Faith Minute is providing a way for families to deepen their faith life and knowledge together. Morning Announcements allow students to begin their day in prayer as a school community, hear birthday announce-ments and get recognized on the Tooth Fairy Report. Fun elements are also interjected each day with Tuesday Tunes, Wacky Wednesday and Throwback Thursday. Ms. VanDyke ends each week by taking over the morning announce-ments and energizing the students for the coming weekend. The outcome of continuing to operate as a connected faith community has been our student's attention to serving others in need both those in our school and larger communities. One family shared a special letter of thanks that they received from the President of Bellin thanking them for raising money to help those on the front lines of health care. The Foster’s painted inspirational rocks and sold them, took the proceeds and gave it to Bellin. Some of our east side families have been hit particularly hard by the COVID19 crisis. Edgar Zaragoza and Autumn DeCleene are working together to collect and distribute groceries and cleaning supplies to these families. Our school staff have also joined in by signing up to help deliver these items on a weekly basis. This work has inspired others in our parish community and other communities in the Green Bay Diocese to donate money to this effort. We are so touched by God's greatness and abundance. During this crazy, different, unsure time our school and parish are able to unite and find God's goodness and bring it to others. It is beautiful to see our school children taking this uncertain time as an opportunity to be the hands and feel of Jesus.

Language and the Depths of Scripture By: Adam Horn, director of Religious Education One thing my friends and I had been doing to pass the time during the quarantine was to learn (or in my case, relearn) Latin (we are not nerds – it is really cool to learn Latin in your free time, trust me). We would take a week to look through some material, then once a week we would have a Zoom meeting to discuss any grammar questions and go through some translations. My hope is to some day be able to read through the Latin translation of the Bible, gain a better understanding of the Latin Mass, and to hopefully glance through some of St. Augustine’s Confessions if I ever make it that far. Others are doing it because learning Latin greatly improves ones English skills. At any rate, language has been on my mind a lot lately. When we better understand the original languages that the Bible was written in, we see that there is much more depth to Scripture than we can pick up from an English translation. One fun little thing that I like to explain to middle school students is that in Hebrew, my name “adam” is simply the word for “a man.” In Genesis, God makes the first man out of the dirt of the earth, which in Hebrew is “adamah.” There’s a little Hebrew pun going on here: God can literally take “adam” out of “adamah”! Puns aside, the Bible is riddled with instances where it helps to know the original language. Since this is the last week-end in Mary’s month of May I will use an example from her life. We are probably all familiar with Mary’s response to the Archangel Gabriel’s announcement that she will bear the Christ-child: “Be it done unto me according to thy word.” We may even know that this is referred to Mary’s “Fiat” (the Latin word for “be it done”). In both English and Latin there is a possible way of reading Mary’s response as a sort of “If this is what God has planned for me, then I am will to do it,” but this misses something from the original Greek. Ancient Greek has a verb mood called the optative, a mood that was rarely used in Latin. The optative mood expresses a strong desire or a wish the that speaker would like to come true. This is the mood of the Greek verb “genoito.” The difference here between the Greek and the Latin or English however is that while the Latin and English simply express what Mary may expect to happen, the original Greek shows us that cooperating with the will of God to bring about the redeemer is something Mary deeply desired to happen. So the next time you read Luke 1:38, don’t read it as Mary’s passive acceptance of what is expected. Read it as Mary hearing the possibility of her greatest desire coming true and her expression of that desire – “Ah! Yes! Please may what you have said happen to me!”

How to Spread Happiness By: Meg Lehman, Evangelization & Youth Coordinator How do you make people feel? How do people leave you? This is something that we don’t really think about when we talk to people or go through life. But it’s something that we need to be aware of, because it’s a reflection of who we are and how we treat others. For instance, take gossip, it’s a vice that’s hard to overcome, and it’s wrong on many levels. Most commonly, it’s known to be wrong be-cause it hurts the reputation of another. But what about the other reper-cussions it has? If your friend calls you, and you start gossiping about someone, is that going to leave them feeling good? Probably not. What about complaining? Now, it’s one thing to talk to people about how you’re doing, that’s one thing, and it’s healthy and good. But if every time you call your mom you’re complaining about this or that, is that going to make her hang up the phone and be happy or feel good? These are the things we need to be conscious of, and we need to make sure that we are living our lives in the way God is calling us. “Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.” How can you make someone better and happier?
