The Ephipany of the Lord January 6, 2019

BLESSING OF HOMES ON EPIPHANY

There are a number of customs associated with the Feast of the Epiphany, such as the blessing of homes and the inscribing of doorways with the names of the Magi. May the inscription be a witness of your faith to others and may the peace of our loving God dwell in your home and in the hearts of all who dwell there. To bless your home, gather your family at a doorway to your home. If you live alone, you may want to share this blessing with friends or make it time for private prayer. Begin by saying: Let us praise God who fills our hearts and homes with peace! Blessed be God forever! The word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ's light and love. The following intercessions are then said: The son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him as we respond: R: Stay with us Lord

Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head, we pray, R.

Lord Jesus Christ you had no place to lay your head, but on the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing, we pray, R.

Lord Jesus Christ, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your great glory, we pray, R.

Then using the chalk that was blessed and distributed at church, a designated member inscribes the following over the doorway: 20 + C + M + B 19 (The numbers are those of the New Year - the initials, C, M, B representing the Magi - Caspar, Melchour, Balthaser - and the three crosses stand for 'saint.' The letters also abbreviate the prayer "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" which means May God bless this house.) Conclude the blessing by praying: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. May we always be with Christ in all our comings and goings. Amen.

Chalk will be distributed after each Mass

Stewardship Corner

If you find it difficult to remember to begin each day with a simple stewardship prayer – asking God how He wants you to share the gifts He has given you – you might want to let one of the Magi be your reminder.

The Magi – or three wise men – traveled far distances and made great sacrifices to bring gifts to Jesus. This year, before you pack away your nativity set, select one of the wise men bearing his gift for Jesus and set this statue in a place that you will see every day – maybe on your desk, your dresser or your kitchen counter. When you see this gift bearer let it be a reminder to ask Jesus what gifts He would like you to give for Him each day throughout the year.

And if someone asks why you still have a Christmas decoration out, you can simply say that this little statue is reminding you to be more generous with the gifts that Jesus gave to you.

Sister Ella Mae McDonald, M.P.F. of the Retired Teachers Filippini of Morristown will speak at all the Masses next weekend. A donor writes, "Your flyer touched my heart - seeing the retired religious, such memories surfaced." Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please give to next week's second collection.

NAME TAG SUNDAY RETURNS IN FEBRUARY!

Nametag Weekend is a hit! We are so happy with the

positive feedback we have received from our parishioners. The power of a simple nametag to unite us in faith, fellowship

and community has been proven right here at St. Vincent Martyr. A few memorable quotes:

“I’ve been waving hello across the pew to the same person for years, now we’ve talked and we can say hello by name”

“I can finally remember the names of the parents whose children go to school with my children”

“I was embarrassed to admit I could not remember a neighbor’s name and then I saw him today at mass and the nametag was a big help.”

If you’d like to help us distribute and collect nametags after the mass you will attend the weekend of February 2-3, please telephone Kathleen McMorrow at (732) 742-9049. We look forward to saying hello to you — by name — February 2-3!

What if each Catholic prayed for ten minutes and read five pages of a great book every day? What if every Catholic did one thing each week to intentionally share God’s message with others? Come and discover how four life-changing habits can point you towards discovering incredible possibilities for your life. You will leave the event with a personal plan to help you become the best version of yourself. Please join Dynamic Catholic and Dr. Allen Hunt. We are co hosting with St. Virgil’s Parish.

Prayer

ATTENTION: MEN OF THE PARISH We are told that God calls us each by name. A weekend at Loyola provides the opportunity to personally realize that experience. Our upcoming Men's Retreat is based on the themes and dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatius tells us that God seeks a personal

relationship with each of us. The weekend provides the silence and solitude needed to help us discover that relationship. Our retreat is under the direction of the Jesuits at Loyola Center in Morristown and begins with supper on Friday evening January 11 and ends at lunch on Sunday, the 13th. A Family Perspective

After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home by "another way." What in your family needs to be done "another way?" Do you need "another way to resolve differences, to communicate or show affection? This is a new year, time to change what isn't working. Take a tip from some wise men, there's always "another way."

Debemos parecernos a Jesús.
