From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers

As we continue our conversation on the Church’s social thought, it is important to remember that the Church is universal – her sons and daughters are all over the world. The Church sees with universal eyes and has universal responsibilities. As members of the Body of Christ, we all, through our baptism, share in those responsibilities. We have thus far discussed six of the ten principles. Today we share three more.

7. The Principle of Stewardship and the Universal Destination of Good. Catholic tradition insists that we show respect for our Creator by being good stewards of creation. A steward is a manager, not an “owner.” Spiritually, we recognize that all good gifts come from God. We have a responsibility to care for and protect the environment. Recognizing this, we also see that the earth is God’s gift for the sustenance of human life. Each person must have access to the level of well-being necessary for life. Therefore, those who have access are responsible for caring for those who do not, sharing with them what they have. This is not to be understood to involve any coercion on the part of higher authorities, as we will see in the next principle. It is a call to the heart to freely share with those in need throughout the globe. Pope Francis reminds us that “Benedict XVI recalled several times that this task entrusted to us by God the Creator requires us to grasp the rhythm and logic of creation. But we are often driven by pride of domination, of possessions, manipulation, of exploitation; we do not ‘care’ for it, we do not respect it, we do not consider it as a free gift that we must care for. We are losing the attitude of wonder, contemplation, listening to creation; thus we are no longer able to read what Benedict XVI calls ‘the rhythm of the love story of God and man’ . . . this culture of waste has made us insensitive even to the waste and disposal of food, which is even more despicable when all over the world, unfortunately, many individuals and families are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Once our grandparents were very careful not to throw away any leftover food. Consumerism has led us to become used to an excess and daily waste of food, to which, at times, we are no longer able to give a just value.”

8. The Principle of Subsidiarity. This principle deals with the responsibilities and limits of government, stating that issues should be dealt with at the lowest possible levels. It teaches that a higher level organization must not interfere with what a lower level organization can do for itself. At the same time, it also states that a higher level of organization has a responsibility to assist a lower level when that lower level is authentically not capable of doing for itself. Pope Benedict XVI says, “The State which would provide everything, absorbing everything into itself, would ultimately become a mere bureaucracy incapable of guaranteeing the very thing which the suffering person - every person - needs: namely, loving personal concern. We do not need a State which regulates and con-trols everything, but a State which, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, generously acknowledges and supports initiatives arising from the different social forces and combines spontaneity with closeness to those in need. The Church is one of those living forces: she is alive with the love enkindled by the Spirit of Christ." (Deus Caritas Est, 28).

9. The Principle of Human Equality. The dignity of all human persons comes from their being made in the image and likeness of God. Differences in talents, cultures, races are a part of God’s plan. Discrimination in fundamental rights of persons is not a part of God’s plan. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches us that as “persons” we are whole unto ourselves and are like the “Persons” of the Holy Trinity. St. John Paul II exhorts: “All human beings ought to value every person for his or her uniqueness as a creature of God, called to be a brother or sister of Christ by reason of the Incarnation and the universal Redemption. For us, the sacredness of human life is based on these premises. And it is on these same premises that there is based our celebration of life – all human life.” We have only one principle left in our discussion, which will be covered next week along with a conclusion to the whole series. Let us continue to bring these principles to prayer and use them to assess our attitudes and actions in our everyday lives throughout the coming week.

Together, We Change Lives A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2015 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 105 families and individuals have responded generously. However, we need the support of all members of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center if we are to be successful in reaching our parish combined goal of $412,760. Now is the time to make a return to the Lord for all He has given us. Even a small gift can make a big difference in the lives of those in need. Whether your gift is $50, $365, $1,000 or even $5,000, it is truly impactful and appreciated. If you have not yet responded to the 2015 ABCD, please consider making a gift—a gift from the heart—by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it! God bless you!
