SAINT POLYCARP (died 155)
February 23 “Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and he never did me
any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?”
Boldly answering the official who demanded he worship
pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,”
demonstrates that courage, far from being the preserve of the
young, is a virtue cultivated through life-long fidelity and
crowned by final perseverance. A disciple of Saint John, who
is said to have consecrated him bishop of Smyrna in modern
day Turkey, Polycarp witnesses to the truth that, whatever
time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist
unites us. Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of
Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint
offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved
and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to
the knowledge of yourself . . . may I be received among the
martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice . . . through the eternal
priest of heaven, Jesus Christ . . . through him be glory to you,
together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
Amen.”—Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
DEVOTIONAL PRACTICE
Miraculous Images In past centuries, images of Christ, Mary, and the saints have
been thought to be miraculous. Some have been the only thing
that was not destroyed by earthquakes, fire, or human deeds.
Other images were miraculously discovered or they returned
mysteriously to their preferred place. These surprising events
might seem to be relegated to past centuries, but they are not.
On April 20, 1906, the eyes of the statue of Our Lady of
Sorrows began to blink for some fifteen minutes in the Jesuit
School of Saint Gabriel in Quito, Ecuador. In 1995, in
Cochabamba, Bolivia, an image of the face of the Divine
Savior cried tears of blood, and afterwards an image of the
Immaculate Conception did the same thing. In 2005, a stain
appeared below Interstate 90/94 on Fullerton Street in
Chicago. This stain is thought to be in the form of the Virgin
Mary. The city tried to remove the image, but it is still visible
and has attracted devoted faithful who have left flowers and
candles. During the twentieth century, many images of Christ,
the Virgin Mary, and even the Holy Spirit have cried tears of
water, blood, or oil that emitted an aroma of roses, or have
showed some other paranormal manifestation.
Science has succeeded in explaining some of these
phenomena, but in many cases this has not been possible. The
hierarchy of the Church usually prefers not to make official
declarations on the subject, at least not before much scrutiny.
Saint John the Apostle recommends examining each spirit (1
John 4:1–3) and this is what the Church does with these
apparently supernatural manifestations. Careful scientific,
social, and spiritual investigations can be undertaken in order
to ensure that the manifestations come from God and not the
devil or other sources. Lastly, the best proof of the veracity of
these phenomena is whether they yield conversion to a gospel-
filled lifestyle. Friar Gilberto Cavazos-González, OFM, Copyright ©

REVEW AND REBUILT
“Today we are announcing the results of our Renew and
Rebuilt campaign after the commitment weekend last
month. Thanks to the 137 families that made their pledge
we have now raised $406.00! This is an impressive
demonstration of generosity! For those who pledged two
weeks ago, you should be receiving in the mail next
November your first bill reminder so you can mail in
your payment. Now, as you know there are over 400
families in the parish, so I am hoping many more
families will participate so this becomes a full parish
effort. If you haven’t made your pledge yet, you are still
on time, please consider joining your fellow parishioners
this coming week. You can make your pledge by using
the newsletter at the entrance of the Church, by coming
to the rectory, or by going online to renewbuild.org.
Thank you everyone for participating in this historic
effort!”

SAN POLICARPO (c. 60-155)

—Padre Joseph J. Juknialis

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
Worlds do change. They come and they go. One day we simply stop climbing up on our mother’s or father’s lap. Or we quit reading comic books, or put away our Barbies®, or we begin to notice beauty. It happens more than once in a lifetime. We pass the exam and get our driver’s license, and in a moment all of childhood’s boundaries crumble. We graduate from school and our days become our own, sometimes frighteningly so. We move away from home and realize we can no longer return, not to the way it once was. And while we think all those moments are of our own doing, in truth they are not, none of them. They come upon us as does November out of autumn, and frequently just as bleak. The temples of our lives that we’ve adorned not only with precious stones but also with precious memories and treasured ways, are always being torn down without one stone left upon another. And no one ever asks our permission. The new worlds we fear the most, however, are not the ones that change our outer landscapes so much as the ones that can reshape our inner landscapes. For believers, for those who live by the ways of Jesus, it is faith that offers us the willingness to trust and the courage to continue on. Jesus’ vision can become the one still point in our ever-changing world, or the one source of life and love when all else is collapsing. —Rev. Joseph J.
