Stats

• Size: 12”-18”in

• Weight: about 5 pounds

• The bill is actually a leathery snout

• Fur is layered to act as a wet suit

• the males have a toxic spur on its back paw

Habitat

• Located only in eastern Australia

• Lives near river banks fresh water lakes and creeks

• They live in deep burrows

• Are most active after dusk and before dawn

Reproduction

• Mating occurs only once a year

• It begins in late june

• A female usually lays 2 eggs but can lay 4

• These eggs resemble a reptiles eggs

Human Interaction• One of the biggest threats to the platypus

is man

• As we continue to develop and cut back on there natural habitat there population continues to decrease

• Since the natural habitat was so small to begin with we have to do our best to preserve what they have left
