Objectives
Page 3
Promote and contribute to the development ofsolar thermal industry in the UAE and in the
MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
The research focuses on both activities related:
-power generation-industrial/civilian processes

Absorption Chillers
[insert presentation title into header and footer] Page 11
Advantages:
Are energy efficient where waste heat is
available and solar resource is high
Require much less electricity input than
vapor compression chillers
Provide a lower cost of cooling than Vapor
compression chillers
Disadvantages:
Require larger cooling towers than vapor
compression chillers
Not feasible for small applications

Single Effect Absorption Chiller

Single vs. Double
Single effect chillers can use low temperature heatfrom flat plate collectors
Double effect chillers require medium temperature
heat which can be obtained from Fresnel collectors or
parabolic trough collectors
COP: Single = 0.7, Double = 1-1.4
Solution used: Single-Lithium Bromide,
Double- Ammonia
Double effect chiller divides the generator in to high
temperature and low temperature parts and thus
adopts a higher heat efficiency
