Hello MASC Members! Welcome to the MASC 2010-2011 year. I am honored to serve as your president and very grateful for the returning and new board members. They are the backbone of our organization. The board members recruit the speakers for our trainings, create the raffles prizes, keep the website updated, send out the public relations information, recruit members, host our meetings and trainings, and so much more. Our board meetings are open for all our members to attend. If you are unable to attend, please share your thoughts and ideas by e-mail; we want to hear from you. Let us know the topics that you are interested in for trainings, speakers that you have heard that would benefit our membership, prob-lems that you would like to share or discuss, etc. You can reach our membership through [email protected]. Budgets are tight and getting tighter. We continue to work hard and do more with less. To help combat tight budgets, MASC will be offering low-cost trainings throughout the year. If you are interested in being a host site, would like to suggest a topic, or assist in planning a training, please let us know. Thank you for joining our organization, for participating in our events, and for the work you to do benefit the senior population in Maryland. We all benefit from your everyday efforts! Sincerely, Susan Brooks MASC President

MASC ANNUAL MEETING
“Pearls of Wisdom”
The MASC Annual Meeting “Pearls of Wisdom” was held at Herrington on the Bay in Anne Arundel County on June 18, 2010. Following the welcome by Jill Hall, outgoing President of MASC, attendees were delighted by the Keynote Speaker, Lynne Brick, of Brick Bodies and Lynne Brick Health Clubs, as she
spoke about active aging. Following our Keynote Speaker, we held a training on “Clear Your Desk, Clear Your Mind” presented by Katherine Trezise, Founder and President of Absolutely Organized. After lunch we heard from several past MASC
presidents about what MASC accomplished during their tenures, then Maryland Department of Aging Secretary Gloria Lawlah installed the new Board of Direc-
tors for 2010-2011. Then it was time to present the always popular Program Awards . Each winner received an engraved plaque to take back to their centers. The day ended with some fun raffle prizes, and each attendee received a special
gift, a crystal clamshell with a pearl, to commemorate the “Pearls of Wisdom” we heard throughout the day.
Special thanks to:

Zoomobile Visits Overlea Senior Center Overlea Senior Center had great fun with The Maryland Zoo Zoomobile on
Thursday, July 22 when they hosted an Intergenerational Event for grandparents and grandchildren. The children, 25 in all, had fun dressing up like a ladybug,
parrot, fish, frog, rabbit and spider. Animal friends from the zoo included a Ma-caw, Chinese Alligator, Flemish Giant Rabbit and Screeching Cockroaches.
The children enjoyed watching the Macaw dance as they sang Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. They loved petting the rabbit and clustered together for safety when
the alligator came out of his container. The cockroaches brought sounds of “yuck” from children AND adults. Following the program everyone enjoyed ice cream, animal crackers and punch. It was a fun day for all ages! Special thanks to Mr. Charles from the Maryland Zoo for such a great program and free passes
for the children to come visit the zoo.

The Annual Anne Arundel County Senior Center Charter Fishing Trip, organized by the Arnold Senior Activity Center, was once again a great success. On June 9, fifteen members from
several of the County’s senior activity centers enjoyed fishing on the "Patrick" out of Happy Harbor in Deale. Everyone enjoyed the day on the water and most went home with a sizable
rockfish ready to cook for dinner. Contributed by Claire Kelly

Grasonville Senior Center hosted a Sock Hop on July 27, 2010. Participants were entertained by Steve Moody "National DJ of the Year 2009,"
enjoyed a hot dog lunch, and ended the day with Root Beer Floats. Other festivities included
games, contests, nostalgic rock & roll concert posters, life size cardboard Elvis, and seven
classic cars on display. Seniors were invited to take photos in the cars; or even climb in the
back seat with their sweetie. It was a fun event and one we will continue each year.

During this past year, Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks Seniors Division conducted oral histories with many of the
African American tennis pioneers who were instrumental in break-ing down the barriers of racial discrimination on the tennis courts of
Druid Hill Park back in the days of segregation and Jim Crow Laws. On Saturday, July 17, the group shared their powerful stories
and recollections with others at the Reginald F. Lewis African American Museum in Baltimore City. A video presentation of
memories from other tennis pioneers who were unable to attend was shown and a lively panel discussion was held afterwards. Jewish
tennis players were also not allowed on the main courts and many played on the "colored courts" and developed lasting friendships
with those African American tennis players. Several tennis greats, along with many others who just loved the game of tennis, learned
and polished their tennis skills on those segregated courts. One player, Ann Koger, even went on to compete in the nationally
known Virginia Slims Tournament. The program touched upon the life skills gained and the beneficial social networking provided to
those who were active on the "colored courts" of Druid Hill Park. The panel ended the discussion with the hope that today's ur-
ban youngsters should have the opportunity to learn the game of ten-nis and its many inherent benefits. As the 150th Anniversary of
Druid Hill Park approaches, this group of Tennis Pioneers will assist with plans for the upcoming fall celebration.
