It is with a sense of pride and profound pleasure that the Consulate General of Greece in New York

opens its doors to the work of Masaaki Noda, a work which has interacted so deeply with the mythology, the

landscape, the very essence of Greece.

Himself in an “Odyssey of an Open Mind,” he has briefly alighted on these shores, and like another

Odysseus, parched with sea salt, he has his own countless stories to share. Our whispers fade to silence as

we listen with bated breath for what he will recount.

Elegance in Tension: Masaaki Noda’s Recent Painting Reiko Tomii

Creativity manifests itself in a spectrum. At one

extreme, creativity is unleashed in unfettered freedom.

The popular image of Pablo Picasso painting with gusto

or Jackson Pollock dancing around the canvas on the floor

fits this “genius” model. At the other extreme, creativity is

discharged in deliberate or tightly controlled manners. Think

of such cerebral operations as László Moholy-Nagy calling

in his “telephone paintings” to a factory or Joseph Kosuth

constructing his visual linguistics of “chairs.” Somewhere

between these two extremes, an artist more often than not

finds a viable creative methodology that suits his or her

temperament and goes on to build a body of signature work.

Sometimes, the methodology initially found may prove

effective yet uneasy; then, a search may have to begin anew

to find another strategy that will fully realize his or her

potential.

Within this spectrum, Masaaki Noda has made an

intriguing transition. Born in 1949 in the city of Fukuyama

in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan, he began his artist career in

the 1970s at the “cerebral” extreme. The medium he chose

was printmaking, which by its nature demands capable

craftsmanship and careful attention to process. Noda

demonstrated superb technical facility and an excellent

sense of formalism by devising multiple series of complex

variegated abstractions. His morphology initially involved

rigorous geometry, but after his move to New York in 1977,

it evolved to encompass flowing curves in delicate tones.

Either way, his work was underscored by an unmistakable

sense of structure, which would inform a diverse body of

work he went on to develop in various media, including

painting and sculpture.

At his new home, Noda established his presence as a

talented printmaker partly benefiting from a tremendous

print boom the American art world then experienced.

However, he began to feel “suffocated” (in his own words)

in the demanding and lengthy process—indeed, it could

take as much as three months to complete some of his prints

that were meticulously planned with more than one hundred

colors that required as many plates. In a sense, even though

his printmaking process was manual, hence analog, the

structure of his forms and colors existed in a highly digitized

realm. His technical competence was in effect a curse: he

found little joy of creativity in his skillful execution. The

whole thing felt like a chore to the artist.

From around 1980, while diligently producing in his

signature style, Noda began experimenting on the side with

freer forms of expression. He began with watercolor, which

he dripped and poured onto paper in the manner of Abstract

Expressionism. He then gradually introduced solid irregular

geometric shapes over the spattered background. Although

the result looks divergent from his signature style of

printmaking, he still maintained a sense of composition and

structure that tied these experiments to “my own context.”

In 1995, he made a conscious decision to abandon

“structure,” together with “my own context,” and dive

into a world of the “unknown” with a faint hope, stoked

by his experiments since 1980, that his experiment might

eventually develop into a substantial body of work. The

ideas that guided him were “what I haven’t done before” and

“what else can be done.” Put differently, “no preplanning”

and “learning to extract the unexperienced and the invisible

from the already visible” laid on paper or canvas.

It was a gutsy move: he not only wanted to transcend

his own predetermined digitalism but also, I argue,

attempted to regain the pleasure of creativity. The procedure

is decisively analog and intuitive. No preparatory plan is

made; forms are added as the artist reacts to and reflects on

what emerges on the picture plane. Against the conventions

of watercolor, he applies paint directly from the tube onto

paper by a knife in order to achieve a luscious opaque

effect. Polygons and polyhedrons are created, one surface

at a time, by spreading the color with the knife’s blade in

one stroke, while shooting lines are generated by sliding

the knife’s tip. (When working with acrylic on canvas, he

applies layers of paint to achieve the same effect.) In some

works, thick impastos of dripped paint enliven the pictorial

surface; in some others, triangular papers are collaged to

break the rectangular constraints of the picture plane; yet

in some others, blank space breathes levity into the whole

cacophony.

In the seeming chaos of Noda’s recent painting,

whether created in watercolor or in acrylic, variegated

polygons and polyhedrons reside over the dripped, poured,

and smeared background. Their dynamic movements, as

though exploding from multiple trigger points, are frenzied

yet never confused, as the artist exercises an exquisite

control in determining the endgame. Still, the control here

is totally analog and freeform, far from being predetermined

or digitized—far from the kind Noda wearied of in his

printmaking. It constitutes a creative puzzle, not a chore, full

of thrill and excitement brought about by the immediacy of

working with his eyes and hands in response to a generative

state of what can be. Certainly, such a game has many

solutions, but what Noda aspires to achieve is “elegance”

that can result only through negotiating two conflicting

vectors, control and freedom, without undermining the

tension between them.

ニューヨークのギリシャ領事館は、この度、ギリシャの神話、その風景、そしてその本質と深く触れ合う野田正明氏の作品を展示する機会を持つことを誇りとし、深い歓びといたします。野田氏は、自らその作品「オープン・マインドのオデュッセイア」としてこの国に漂い来たり、潮風を匂わせながら、様々な、数無き話をしてくれる。私達は息を呑んで、その話に聞き入るのだ。

相克のエレガンス―野田正明の近作絵画富井玲子

　創造性の表出は一通りではない。一つの極は自由の謳歌だろう。何のためらいもなく筆を運ぶピカソや、床に敷いたカンバスの周りを踊るかのようにドリッピングするポロックといったイメージは、いわば「天才」型の創造力に呼応する。対極は「頭脳」型。たとえば電話で絵画を注文制作したモホリ・ナジや、椅子の定義をイメージと言語で分析したコスースなどが好例だ。多くの場合、アーティストはこの両極の間のどこかに、自らの特性に適した方法論を見出し代表作につなげていく。もしも最初の方法論が効果的でも体質に合わなければ、また新たに自分の能力を十全に発揮できる方法論を探求しなおさねばならない場合もあるだろう。

　方法論の発見では、野田正明はユニークな展開をとげた、と言える。1949年に広島県福山市に生まれた野田は、1970年代に「頭脳」型の作家として出発した。野田の選んだ表現は版画だが、技術的達成と細部への目配りが不可欠な媒体である。実際、野田は優れた技術と卓抜な造形感覚を駆使して、複雑な色彩抽象を展開した。初期の作品は厳格な幾何学を基本にしていたが、1977年にニューヨークに移住してからは流線的なフォルムを繊細な色調で表現するようになった。各段階に共通するのは堅実な構成感覚で、同時期に野田が手掛けた絵画や彫刻などにも見出せる特質であった。

　ニューヨークでの野田は、当時の版画ブームの追い風もあいまって、才能ある版画家としての地位を確立した。だが、野田は時間のかかる細かい版画制作のプロセスを「苦しい」と感じるようになっていた。実際、作品によっては、綿密に計算した構成で百色以上もの色を使い、百を越える版数の版画を仕上げるのに3ヶ月を要したことも珍しくはなかったのだ。版画制作は手仕事であり、それゆえにアナログだが、野田の造形と構成は実際には高度にデジタル化された表現の域に達していた。技術的達成は逆に重荷となり、器用にこなす制作に創造の喜びはなく、機械的処理以上のものではなくなっていた。

　1980年頃から、野田は版画制作のかたわら、より自由な表現を求めて実験を始めた。最初は水彩でドリッピングや吹き流しなど抽象表現主義を意識した技法を試み、徐々に不規則な幾何学形態をその上に配置するようになった。これらの新しい絵画の試みは、それまでの野田の版画様式と一線を画していたが、「自分の脈絡」―つまり、自らの様式展開のロジック―を根本的に支える「構成」の感覚がまだ息づいていた。

　野田が「構成」も「自分の脈絡」もかなぐり捨てる決意をしたのは、ようや

く1995年になってからのことだった。1980年から続けてきた実験を通じて新たな展開への道筋がゆっくりと見えてきたこともあり、「全くの未知数」の世界へと飛び込んでいく。「これまでにしなかったことは何か」、「ほかに何ができるのか」を基本コンセプトにしての制作は、「無作為からスタートする制作」であり、紙やカンバスの上の可視の世界に「未経験の不可視」を見出していく作業だった。

　なんと思い切った決断だろう。野田は、自らの予定調和的なデジタル主義の限界を乗り超えようとしたばかりではない、創造の喜びを取り戻そうとしていたのではないか。新しい方法論は、決定的にアナログで直感的だった。ドローイングなどの習作を一切作らずに、画面に現出してくるものをじっくりと反応を見ながら次の形態を加えていく。そして、水彩絵具を水で薄めずにチューブから直にパレットナイフにつけて彩色した。

　野田は、水彩絵具で厚塗りという、セオリーに反した技法をあえて用いて深みのある不透明な質感を作り出した。一面ずつナイフで絵具を一気にのばして多角形や多面体を作り、ナイフの先を滑らせて鋭い線を描き出す。（ただし、アクリル絵具でカンバスに描くときは、この逆で、何回も塗り重ねて同様の質感を実現する）。ドリップした絵具のインパストが表面を活性化する作品もあれば、三角形の紙を何枚か縁からはみ出すようにコラージュして四角い画面の閉鎖性を回避した作品もあれば、絵具を塗らない余白の空間が形態で混雑しがちな画面に軽みを吹き込んだ作品もある。

　野田の近作絵画は、アクリル画でも水彩画でも、ドリッピングや吹き流しで彩られた背景の上に、色様々な多角形や多面体が散在して、一見するとカオスに思える。それらの形態はいくつもの発火点から爆発した感があるが、ダイナミックな運動は強烈ではあるものの、けっして混沌ではない。なぜなら、野田は彼の秀逸な制御感覚を発揮して、制作をどう締めくくるのか、巧妙に按配しているからだ。とはいえ、この制御感覚はあくまでアナログであり自然体だ。彼がかつて版画制作で苦しめられた予定調和やデジタル化した制御とは似ても似つかない。だから制作は、創造的な謎解きでこそあれ、機械的処理ではない。未生の形を引き出しながら自分の眼と手を使って行う制作の直截性が、創造にスリルと興奮をもたらすのだ。かくなる制作は、いくつもの答えがあるパズルに似ている。ただし、野田の目指す絵画は、相反する２つのベクトル―自由と制御―を舵取りしながら、両者の緊張を損なわないように導き出された、相克のエレガンスなのである。
