Maryland Recycling Centers Introduction What We Learned Acknowledgements Description The Code for Community Challenge has the stated goal of improving the quality of life in local neighborhoods through the use of a mobile applications. For our Code for Community project, we chose to tackle the problem of recycling. Our Android application, Maryland Recycling, was developed over the course of 2 and ½ months. It focuses on recycling centers in the state of Maryland. This app has several categories of recyclables such as batteries, cardboard, and electronics. Based on the type of recyclable you select you will then be directed to the appropriate recycling centers. We would to thank Dr. Alan Peel, our scholars mentor for his assistance on our capstone project. We would also like to thank Dr. Alexander Chen, the faculty advisor for the Code for Community Challenge as well as our mentor for this project, especially for his assistance in helping us ascertaining the goals of this project early on. Photo Credits to Holden Smith. Our mobile application draws from a hard-coded database which stores a list of recycling centers in the state of Maryland. Our application retrieves data from this database by type. The information is then returned as a list of all the recycling centers in the state for the appropriate recyclable. The application gives information on the recycling center’s name, address phone number, email and website.. The application also interfaces with the Google Maps API to give the user directions to the recycling center that they selected. We learned how to work in Android Java, which we found to be somewhat different from standard Java. We experienced what is like to work under a constrained time span for a project and became better at separating and delegating work in a team environment and at meeting self-set deadlines. Also we learned appropriately and effectively use GitHub to share code and work on the project simultaneously. Introduction What We Learned

AcknowledgementsDescription

The Code for Community Challenge has the stated goal

of improving the quality of life in local neighborhoods

through the use of a mobile applications. For our Code

for Community project, we chose to tackle the problem

of recycling. Our Android application, Maryland

Recycling, was developed over the course of 2 and ½

months. It focuses on recycling centers in the state of

Maryland. This app has several categories of

recyclables such as batteries, cardboard, and

electronics. Based on the type of recyclable you select

you will then be directed to the appropriate recycling

centers.

We would to thank Dr. Alan Peel, our scholars mentor

for his assistance on our capstone project. We would

also like to thank Dr. Alexander Chen, the faculty

advisor for the Code for Community Challenge as well

as our mentor for this project, especially for his

assistance in helping us ascertaining the goals of this

project early on. Photo Credits to Holden Smith.

Our mobile application draws from a hard-coded

database which stores a list of recycling centers in the

state of Maryland. Our application retrieves data from

this database by type. The information is then returned

as a list of all the recycling centers in the state for the

appropriate recyclable. The application gives

information on the recycling center’s name, address

phone number, email and website.. The application also

interfaces with the Google Maps API to give the user

directions to the recycling center that they selected.

We learned how to work in Android Java, which we

found to be somewhat different from standard Java. We

experienced what is like to work under a constrained

time span for a project and became better at separating

and delegating work in a team environment and at

meeting self-set deadlines. Also we learned

appropriately and effectively use GitHub to share code

and work on the project simultaneously.

ListView in Android.”

Holden – “I learned how different Activity pages in

Android work together to make the full application.”

Vinny – “I learned how to make Android applications

interact with other apps, specifically Google Maps,

the Mail app, and the Phone app.”
