Principal’s Report
Awards Night – A MarvellousEvening and a Reflection on ourYear
The Broadway Musical ‘Rent’ features asong which outlines the best ways for aperson to measure a year. It asks us to usedaylights, sunsets, midnights, cups of
coffee. 525 600 minutes later, we need to look at the measureof success for being at our school, one year on.
Changes started, literally, from the first day, as MaryboroughState High School attained Independent Public School status. As part of a select group of 81 Secondary Schools inQueensland we are able to provide innovative curriculum, tailored to the individual needs of our greater community. Wehave joined Aldridge State High School as two State Secondaryschools in Maryborough that can deliver high quality outcomesfor Maryborough, united in policy, purpose and performance.
The school reviewed policies and practices, we reflected on ourcommon vision and purpose and finally settled on three words. Our role as a school, above all others, is to Value, Develop andEmpower our students. If our energies are not working towardsone or all of these areas, then there is no alignment betweenour words and our actions.
We have spent part of those 525 600 minutes looking atinnovative curriculum delivery, with a unique agreement with theUniversity of the Sunshine Coast for Direct Entry to Universitystudy using our Nationally Recognised Training packages. Weoffer a Diploma of Business which provides truly astonishingopportunities – but more about those in a moment – we have
developed STEM and Coding curricula for our Junior Schoolwhich will link into our Engineering pathways in future years. We have lifted the bar with our Nationally Recognised TrainingPackages with preparations made for Certificate 3 courses asour minimum benchmark from 2018, and preparations are wellunderway for our new Queensland Curriculum for Senior, whichwill commence in 2019.
Our NAPLAN and Year 12 results position Maryborough StateHigh School highly in relation to similar schools across Australia, with the enviable achievement of every student attaining theirQueensland Certificate of Education, and every student whoapplied receiving a University placement. It is this level ofexcellence for which Maryborough State High School has beenselected as a finalist in the Fraser Coast Business and TourismAwards in the twin categories of Education Provider of the Year,as well as for our Diploma of Business event, FraserPop, as themost outstanding event in Fraser Coast for 2017.
Our usage of Bring Your Own Device computer systems acrossthe school has made accessing technology for learning easierand more effective. We will be continuing our improvementsto our IT network with a full switch, server and fibre upgradein the next 12 months. We continue to develop our studentsin usage of technology in the classroom, with Virtual Realitygoggles, drones and robots, as well as other IT developmentto empower our students with the skills required to compete inthe industries to come. For us, use of these tools is more thanusing shiny toys – it is the use of 21st century technology in a21st century school.
On the sporting field, Maryborough State High School’s twoAcademies have yielded State and National representation forour students, with the Maryborough State High School crestbeing seen on sporting fields as diverse as Italy and Brazilfrom our Soccer stars. Development squads will be travelling tothe Liverpool Talent Development Headquarters in New SouthWales in the coming months. Our Hockey teams are developing
their skills well and we look forward to seeing great things in2018 with their new multi-age development class from Easter. We also commence our Rugby 7s Academy from Easter, withstudents from Years 7-9 working with the Queensland RugbyUnion. Along with a number of other sports, we will be dustingoff our oars and taking to the water once again in conjunctionwith Wide Bay Rowing as we commence a rowing programfor the first time in almost 30 years. A significant expansion ofour instrumental music program, with assistance of heads ofprogram from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music andguest composers and teachers, will ensure we will fill our hallswith beautiful music for years to come.
Of course, we have made big developments in the last 525 600minutes in the physical environment of the school. Our schoolis now fully air conditioned, new fans installed in the sportshall, new classroom furniture in many areas of the school aswell as other improvements to ensure our students are valuedand developed in their learning journey. We look forward to2018 with the commencement of our Performing Arts Complex, named for the first Headmaster and Headmistress ofMaryborough Boys and Girls Grammar, expected to becompleted in the second half of next year. We anticipate thatour next Awards Night may be held in the Murdoch DarlingCentre, at Maryborough State High School.
Our Awards Night was a celebration of the achievements of ourstudents, and the devotion of our staff, parents and students inunison achieving excellence from every student. It is importantto remember that excellence is not only about being the topstudent; rather, as the word suggests, is about excelling. It isabout students working hard, setting goals, meeting them andachieving more than they thought possible. It is about usingresources, asking for help, being responsible, and being valued, developed and empowered to do their best. My challenge toour community is to reflect on how you use your 525 600minutes in the next year – and make every one of them count.

Choir NewsMusic Count Us In was held on Thursday, 2 November 2017.The day is celebrated nationally, across the country – allregistered schools sing the same song, on the same day, at thesame time. The event is live streamed so that all participatingschools can tune in and feel connected to the rest of thecountry as they sing the song that stops the nation!
Celebration Day this year occurred at the MaryboroughMarkets. Our Maryborough State High School Choirparticipated in this wide scale event. There was a huge turn outfrom primary and secondary schools, state and catholic, fromthe Fraser Coast region.
At 11:30am, all schools assembled at the stage area to singShine Together, the 2017 song. Instrumental ensembles alsoaccompanied, with some groups creating actions to suit thesong.
The day was a huge success and would not be possible withoutthe dedicated classroom and instrumental music teachers andstudents in our region.
Our Maryborough State High School Choir had a fantastic timeand received compliments on their wide and infectious smileswhen they performed.
