SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… I write this column as the last one before I retire as Pastor of St. Mary’s. As I said to Bishop Caggiano at

Confirmation last Sunday, I have been privileged and blessed to be the Pastor of St. Mary’s for these past

three years and two months. This is has been one of the most difficult tasks of my life. It has also been the

source of great joy, a joy that is inexpressible. I became Pastor unexpectedly and under difficult

circumstances. It took quite a while before the shadows that held me down were dissipated. For some, those

shadows will always be there. Not for me. God has blessed me in so many ways in this parish. We have

been able to strengthen and advance the special mission of this parish, which is to contribute mightily to the

spiritual, doctrinal and liturgical renewal of the Catholic Church. We have opened up the doors of Saint

Mary’s to the Diocese, to the city and to the world. No longer are we closed in on ourselves, doing our own

thing, and relishing our outlier existence as if it were a leper colony. If we believe that the Traditional Roman

Mass is one of the chief keys to the renewal of the Catholic Church, then we must open that door to other

parishes and to other Catholics in the Diocese. What we did at St. Pius X parish in Fairfield a few weeks ago

must be part of the future of this parish. We must bring the beauty and joy of the Mass to as many parishes

and people as we can.

But it is just as important that this parish exude the joy of the Catholic faith. The Coffee Hour after the 9:30

Mass has become a true example of communal joy and fellowship. When outsiders come to the Coffee Hour

they are always amazed at the energy and vitality of everyone there, from toddlers to septuagenarians. The

Book Store has become a wonderful center for people just to drop in and talk. It has become in its own way a

center of evangelization. The Rectory has become a place where all are welcome, where many have been fed,

where all feel at home. Of course, the Rectory is the priests’ home and their privacy must be respected. But it

should never be a fortress that is forbidding and exclusive.

Everyone must warmly welcome Father Ringley as Pastor of Saint Mary’s. He is a fine priest, he loves the

Traditional Mass, he understands deeply the problems within the Church, and he takes being a Pastor

ultimately seriously. Please invite him into your homes for dinner and get to know him and let him get to

know you. Y habla español muy bien.

My last Sunday sermon as Pastor will center on Friendship and what that means for a Christian and for a

priest. The self-sacrifice that is at the heart of the priesthood is at the center of Christian friendship. The

friendships with which God has blessed me while I have been Pastor have taught me what Christian love is all

about. It is that Love that I will carry with me and deepen for the rest of my life. To have celebrated the

Traditional Mass almost every day at the high altar in this beautiful church has fulfilled my priesthood as

nothing else could.

Remember that only pastors retire. Priests never retire. So continue to pray for me and my priesthood.

NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Silent and Humble Adoration

Imagine the scene of our Blessed Mother in the humble state of the Nativity. She had no home at that moment other than this

place where animals gathered. Yet in the stillness of that holy night, she was at home as she gazed upon her Child with the

deepest adoration and love. She gazed in silence as He lay sleeping on the hay. This must be an image of your soul. You are

called to enter into the humility of the inner dwelling place of your heart. Deep within, you must see this Precious Child, resting

in peace. Remain silent and attentive, keep your eyes fixed on Him in adoration, and allow yourself to become consumed with

delight at His presence within your soul. Reflect upon your humble and silent prayer. As you sit quietly before Jesus, or even as

you go about the duties of your day, are you attentive to the divine presence of your Savior living within you? Do you see Him

sleeping there in the stillness? Our souls must become a place of prayer and silence so that we can humbly keep our eyes upon

our Lord within this holy dwelling place. If you keep your eyes upon Him, as He dwells silently within you, you will then go

about your day with the peace and joy that only this holy Child can bring.

Letting go of Grudges, Anger and Revenge Once an 8-year old was ask: What is a grudge? She answered: “It’s when you hold all the madness inside”.

Grudges weigh us down, keep us tight-fisted and tense, turn us inside out, and make us wince when someone even lightly touches

our emotions, much as we do when there is an open sore on the skin.

Holding tight to grudges, we allow ourselves to be fooled into thinking we somehow control the one who harmed us by clinging to

our madness and anger. Grudges are a kind of solitary, sometimes secret, revenge.

There was no bitterness in Jesus, though some people deliberately derided and ridiculed Him. He held no grudges, though some

people intentionally harmed Him. He had no desire for vengeance, though some accused Him of crimes they themselves had

committed. In Jesus there was only patience for the sinner, and mercy.

In the "Mirror of Love," St. Aelred (12th century) once wrote that the perfection of brotherly love is found in Jesus' love for those

who harmed Him, particularly His forgiveness of His executioners. Aelred recalls the image of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah:

"Though He was harshly treated, He submitted and opened not His mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the

shearers, He was silent and opened not His mouth." (Isaiah 53:7)

With novel insight into the mercy of Jesus, Aelred writes:

"It was not enough to pray for them (his executioners): He wanted also to make excuses for them. 'Father, forgive them, for they

do not know what they are doing.' They are great sinners, yes, but they have little judgment; therefore, 'Father, forgive them.' They

are nailing me to the cross, but they do not know who it is that they are nailing to the cross: 'if they had known, they would never

have crucified the Lord of glory; therefore, Father, forgive them.'

"They think I am a lawbreaker, an imposter claiming to be God, a seducer of the people. I have hidden my face from them, and

they do not recognize my glory; therefore, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'"

Aelred was not implying that Jesus was ignorant of the intentions of those who harmed Him, that He was naïve to the power of

evil, or that we should gloss over the damage inflicted by the devil on the world around us. To the contrary, like Isaiah he presents

Jesus as one who consciously, deliberately, and intentionally bore the weight of our sin and the chaos caused by Satan's evil

strategies. Jesus was fully aware of everything that brought about His suffering - more aware than any of us can be when we suffer

- and breaking through the human cycle of grudge and revenge, He forgave.

When we see Jesus on the cross, the effects and ramifications of our sin are before us in stark relief - but so are the release and

freedom won by His perfect love. Jesus will always be our expert advocate - "Father, forgive them" - because He bore our sin in

all its ugliness and is the only one qualified to speak on our behalf. If anyone has the "right" to hold a grudge, it is Jesus. But He

does not: His love burns up our sin in one everlasting sacrifice, like fire refines gold or silver by burning off the dross.

It is a time to let go of grudges, to forsake vengeful attitudes and words, to let out all the "madness" by forgiving those who have

harmed us. (?) It is difficult to forgive, and we might have to begin by asking God to give us the desire to forgive. Step by step He

will show us the folly of our tight fists and open sores and instill in us the will to let go of anger and revenge. He will remind us to

look to the cross and see how His Son wiped up the mess of our sin, carried it away on the cross, and burned it up in love.

It is helpful to picture the rock-carrying elders who dragged the adulterous woman before Jesus to be "tried" for her sin. It was

Jesus who was on trial, of course. When He invited any elder without sin to cast a stone at the woman, one by one they left Him,

rocks dropping to the ground. You can almost hear the thuds and see the dust swirl up as they fall.

If we find it hard to drop the stone of grudges, we can at least begin by handing them to Jesus, who will gently place them on the

ground before us. Freed of the extra weight, we will be on the road to forgiveness.

“If we knew that by lying and slandering persons, we are given them HEAVEN on a silver platter, we would think twice and find

other ways to harm them”

St Paul gives us the secret to rising above the downward spiral of envy and jealousy, the antidote for this poison. He shows us

where we should base our self-worth and security: not on being better than other people or trying to impress them, but on doing

what God created us to do and striving to please Him.

San Juan Bautista cuya fiesta celebramos hoy, renuncia a una vida normal y acepta el camino del sacrificio. Los Evangelios nos dicen que vestía con piel de camello y se alimentaba de chapulines y miel silvestre, no tomaba ni vino ni licor. Es decir que lleva una vida sumamente austera, difícil e incómoda para poder cumplir su misión divina. Su humildad era extrema. Podía pasar por Cristo o el profeta, pero él afirma que no es más que la voz que clama en el desierto, y que con relación al Mesías no es digno siquiera de desatarle las correas de sus sandalias. Y cuando Cristo ya está presente le cede sus discípulos y afirma

conviene que Él crezca y que yo disminuya . Sabe, pues, ponerse humildemente en segundo plano, desaparecer, para que resalte la presencia del Señor. Es un hombre valiente, no tiene miedo de decir la verdad frente a los poderosos de su tiempo: jefes religiosos y políticos. Su valentía en anunciar la verdad y en denunciar las injusticias se manifiesta, por ejemplo, cuando les dice a los fariseos que van a verlo: Raza de víboras, ¿acaso

podrán escapar del castigo que se os viene encima? Y al rey Herodes reprende públicamente por el escándalo de tener por esposa a la mujer de su hermano. Esta denuncia le costará más tarde incluso la vida. San Juan Bautista, ruega por nosotros!

Fernando Santos es el entrenador de la selección de Portugal y es un católico que no se avergüenza de su fe. Participó en un Cursillo de Cristiandad, del que afirma que volvió transformado. “¡Me caí del caballo!”. ¿Su gran descubrimiento? “¡Está vivo!”, afirma Fernando Santos sobre Jesús vivo en la Eucaristía: “Lo que me toca es el sagrario, saber que Él está ahí, que puedo hablar con Él, que Él me oye y que yo hablo… Y algo bueno es que no me responde enseguida. Responde siempre, pero no me interpela enseguida ahí. Ese descubrimiento me cambió radicalmente. La cuestión del amor empezó a germinar ahí”. Son tan pocas cosas las que pide… Y ¿Qué pide Fernando Santos en sus oraciones? Todos los días, su primera oración, en diálogo con el Espíritu Santo, es para “…pedir el don de la sabiduría, para poder oírlo, escucharlo. Después viene la perseverancia, dejar que Él me ame siempre. Y en tercer lugar, la humildad, para que lo pueda vivir sirviendo a los hermanos”.
