Understanding the impact of the social system on individual behavior change is essential in helping to mitigate the possible conflicts accompanying social change. Professional Statement

As a leadership scholar and practitioner, I focus in supporting communities in change

processes at the individual, household, and community levels. Understanding the impact of

the social system on individual behavior change is essential in helping to mitigate the possible

conflicts accompanying social change. Strong, resilient communities are made up of the

individuals and their assets, the relationships and bonds between one another, and the

▪ Qualitative student researcher: best practices for a successful study abroad program

before, during, and after the experience.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Researching Water Governance in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya – 2019 – Present

▪ Investigating rural water governance models. As a Co-PI, Rodriguez and team are

investigating various models of water governance in three target countries. The team

has developed a qualitative protocol to use with key informants and focus groups

help with water users.

ICT as a Tool for Food Security and Agricultural Intervention, Tanzania – 2018 – 2019

▪ Exploring the possibility to use Phones as an ICT to support farmer needs. As the PI,

Rodriguez developed an instrument to gain perceptions of ICT use in rural

Tanzania. Rodriguez led the research team to conduct household surveys in two

villages in Singida district. She collaborated and worked closely with the University

of Dodoma.

Investigating the experiences of New Americans in Urban Ohio – 2017 – Present

▪ Working closely with a community partner, Rodriguez and colleagues are

investigating the increase in suburban poverty thought the investigation of the

livelihoods of New Americans. Research activities include: focus groups to explore

the impact of English training on community integration. Future studies planned: a

social network analysis of New Americans living in a suburban area to explore the

barriers and access to resources and the impact on community integration.

Community Resiliency for Somali Refugees – January 2016 – 2017

▪ Coordinating programming to increase social capital for Somali women. Rodriguez

has been working with a local community in exploring how to increase community

resiliency through development of social capital with women. Activities include:

social programming, community building, women’s empowerment, and focus

groups to assess process.

Exploring Competencies of MATI Graduates – Office of International Programs – CFAES

(PI: Mark Erbaugh) May 2016 – January 2017

▪ Collaboratively developed instrument to assess competencies of MATI graduates in

their roles as extension agents. Rodriguez led research efforts while coordinating

with partners at Sokoine University of Agriculture. She also conducted qualitative

research trainings for graduate students and researchers while there.

▪ Analyzed focus group data from participating students to gauge their perceptions of

their school gardens and began identifying possible attitude and behavioral changes

that could ultimately lead to better food security.

Role of Women in Household Food Security in Trinidad & Tobago- Global Education Lab,

UF (PI: Dr. Amy Harder) March 2014

▪ As part of a NIFA Higher Education Challenge Grant, traveled to Trinidad & Tobago

to understand the role that women play in household food security. We conducted

personal interviews with various groups of people to determine how women affect

household nutritional security.

Climate Change and Hardiness in Belize- Global Education Lab, UF (PI: Dr. Amy Harder)

March 2013

▪ As part of a NIFA Higher Education Challenge Grant, traveled to Belize to look at

hardiness by local people in the face of climate change. We conducted personal

interviews and collected data pertaining to perceptions of climate change and their

level of hardiness and ability to cope with crisis.

Rural Participatory Research- Peace Corps, Cameroon, September 2010- June 2012

▪ Participatory mapping exercises to identify water resources. Needs assessments to

identify needed interventions pertaining to agro-forestry. Conducted transect walks

to map resources within the village.
