Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center

Receives Grant Award from Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation

Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center was awarded a grant for the completion

of its playground renovation project. Executive Director of the Clarence T.C. Ching

Foundation, Tertia Freas, presented a check in the amount of $50,000 to the ELC

Director, Lisa Foster on April 29, 2017 at Mary, Star of the Sea Church. (See Photo

Below)

On behalf of the Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation, each ELC family received a copy of

the book, “A Prophecy Fulfilled: The Story of Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation.” It is

an amazing and inspiring story of a man who came from very humble beginnings; the

son of Chinese immigrant parents and one of ten children. As a child, Clarence was

weak and sickly, but overcame the challenges in his life and went on to become a man

of vision, amazing generosity and humanitarian spirit. Clarence T.C. Ching passed

away on May 29, 1985 at the age of 72. Just days after his passing, the Honolulu

Advertiser wrote:

As the son of an immigrant father, Clarence Ching worked hard all his life. He proved

that a humble beginning is no barrier if one has constructive dreams and the ability and

determination to make them come true.”

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:

FIRST READING: Acts of the Apostles 2:14a, 36-41 - This reading,

if taken together with that of the following Sunday, provides an alterna-

tive theme in exploring the preaching of the early Church in the persons

of Paul and Barnabas. The mission first to the Jews is now to be placed

second to the mission to the Gentiles, — a theme which warns that those

who follow the Lord will themselves endure trials and sufferings.

SECOND READING: 1Peter 2:20b-25 - In these verses today, St.

Peter is giving advice to Christians who were slaves. He tells them to be

submissive to their masters with all respect.

GOSPEL: John 10:1-10 - We have Christ as our shepherd—He tells

us so himself in today's gospel—and we do not resent being called sheep

in this context. There is something guileless about a sheep, and at the

same time a lot of foolishness! But with Christ as our shepherd and the

"good shepherd" who is sincerely interested in the true welfare of His

flock we have reason to rejoice.
