Passing It On
Faith Formation
Friends, the past two weeks have been painful for our country. We’ve watched peaceful protests, rightly demanding justice for minorities, be marred by violence and destruction. It’s heartbreaking. It’s important to pray for justice because as we know, prayer doesn’t change God, but prayer often changes circumstances, and prayer always changes us. That prayer was visible this past Tuesday night. The Park Ridge community, with participation from area churches, held a gathering for prayer and action in Uptown. Though Mary, Seat of Wisdom wasn’t listed on the flyer, I was there, along with several parishioners, and others who I know participated online. It was peaceful, it was prayerful, it was inspiring, and it called us all to action to change our country for the better, one community at a time. I encourage us all to continue to pray for change for the better.
This past week we resumed celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Sunday we will celebrate the first baptism. There are more than a dozen other families for baptism that we are in the process of scheduling. I am grateful to our leadership team and volunteers who have made this happen. We can continue to schedule these sacraments, and funerals and weddings with 10 or fewer attendees.
We will now move to Phase 1A of the Reopening Plan: Opening Church for Private Prayer. The church will be open for private prayer for a maximum of ten people in church at a time. For this reason, you may encounter a period of waiting outside or in the parking lot, similar to those coming for reconciliation. The church will be open:
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
June 15, 17, and 19 8:30-9:30 a.m. & 7:00-8:00 p.m.
The Cardinal and the Archdiocesan Task Force have announced plans for the resumption of public Masses. Each parish must be certified for Phase 2. To be certified for Phase 2, a parish must already have celebrated/hosted three gatherings and it must have a reservation/registration system in place to effectively manage attendance.
The Cardinal wishes to inform parishioners that the dispensation from Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation continues. We still advise that the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions continue to stay at home and participate through livestreamed and televised Masses.
Before we resume Sunday Masses, we want to implement livestreaming rather than pre-recorded Masses at MSW. Livestreaming parish liturgies is a way of serving those who cannot attend Masses in person. We had attempted to set up for this weeks ago but ran into technical difficulties. We hope those can be resolved in the next two weeks.
Per the Archdiocesan recommendations, the limit on attendees per Mass and all other liturgical celebrations at MSW is 50, taking into consideration the seating capacity of our church and the recommendation that parishes begin with a 15% limit. This recommendation is made so that we can gain critical experience in managing and keeping safe larger numbers of people, as well as accomplishing cleaning and disinfecting between services.
Per the Phase 2 certification requirements, our parish will need to use a reservation/registration system to ensure proper management of parishioner attendance; this will benefit both parishioners as an assurance of their ability to participate, as well

A Very Special Message from Father Derek
Dear families and friends of Mary Seat of Wisdom,
As you may have heard, this week I received the joyful news that beginning July 1, 2020 Cardinal Cupich has appointed me the next pastor of Mary, Seat of Wisdom. My transition has been greatly eased by living with the priests and working with the staff this past year. I felt extremely blessed by them and by your warm welcome when I first arrived, and I look forward to serving as your pastor in the years to come!
Along with the parish staff, faculty, and parishioners, we thank Fr. Jerry Gunderson for his dedication of 15 years at Mary, Seat of Wisdom. He has been an excellent role model for us young priests and a humble servant to God’s people. We congratulate him on his retirement and look forward to celebrating with him as soon as possible! We love you, Fr. Jerry!
We celebrated the end of the Easter Season with the great feast of Pentecost. We ask God to send us a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit, especially during this time of pandemic, upon our families, our parish and those most in need. Come, Holy Spirit, come!
Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Derek Ho
GRACE AND ETERNAL LIFE
Moses is a man after our own hearts, for haven’t we
all dealt with more than our share of stiff-necked people?
Indeed, haven’t we all gotten a little stiff-necked
ourselves at times? Complaining . . . impatient . . . quick
to anger. How lucky for Moses—how lucky for all of
us—that God is exactly the opposite! And we don’t even
have to guess about it. The Lord tells us so directly.
Accordingly, Moses does what we all need to do. Even
with the tablets in hand, he bows down and asks for
God’s forgiveness and grace.
Encouraging us to live together in peace—and in
God’s favor—the Apostle Paul knows all about this
grace, joyfully invoking Christ’s grace on us along with
God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s. “Rejoice,” he says. And when it comes to rejoicing,
John offers us the gladdest words of all: the assurance of eternal life through Jesus. C opyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
The Father is my trust,
the Son is my refuge,
the Holy Spirit
is my protection.
O holy Trinity,
glory to Thee.

as volunteers and their ability to anticipate attendance.
Details about the reservation system we will use will be communicated soon.
If we are certified for Phase 2, Sunday Masses with limited participation will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening, June 20 and at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, June 21, so that we can gain experience with the required procedures.
As we develop and implement our reservation system, I ask your patience and understanding. I know and feel your strong desire to return to Sunday and daily Masses. At the same time, we must take appropriate precautions as long as there is any risk of spreading COVID-19 in public gatherings.
Fr. Jerry Gunderson
Released May 31, 2020
The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across
our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch
embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I
surprised? No.
As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned
that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit
twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring
about the marginalized?
I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our
society. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do
not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop
talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.”
Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create
a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws
do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields
are leveled.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of
societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is
poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the
soaring of a rocket.
I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to
bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those
answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning
nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since
the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich

MSW Celebrates Graduates with Car Parade
In this time of coronavirus and “shelter-in-place” it was a challenge to determine how to celebrate graduation for the Class of 2020, the 61st graduating class of Mary, Seat of Wisdom School. On Friday, May 22, all eighth grade families were encouraged to decorate their cars and take a turn around the west parking lot. The lot itself was decorated with balloons, a GIANT blue wavy man and a bagpiper, who played the whole evening. Families were asked to stop at a number of tables to pick up a MSW Class of 2020 lawn sign, graduation photos and class composites, picture frames, a Class of 2020 t-shirt, some treats, and a bag containing the things that had been collected from their lockers. Between the various stops, faculty and staff members were cheering on the families, visiting and chatting as the cars stopped. In addition to the teachers, Fr. Gunderson, Fr. Derek, Fr. Tim, Deacon Pat, Seminarian Andy and Assistant Principal Rob Potempa joined Principal Julie Due in welcoming all the graduates and their families. Thank you to Pete Kapetan and Lenny Romano for organizing the parking lot, setting up cones and designing a traffic plan for the parade. The evening was a lot of fun, and gave our graduates a chance for fun. Everyone seemed to enjoy the special attention and the opportunity to visit one more time before graduation.
Thank you for your continuing generosity!
