We have been told by our parents that every action we take effects everyone around us, but how many actually realize how far the accountability stretches? This paper promotion for Reaction by Gmund explores not only the capability of this idea, but the possibilities of the paper as well.

at one of the best brandmarketing firms in the city.
The woman she worked for had a reputation for firing new personnel at the drop of a hat, whether they did the slightest thing to irritate her or acutally screwed up.
She reminded Claire of woman on ‘The Devil wears Prada’ but with more of an interest of making her co-workers life hell. Every sketch was wrong, not her ‘vision’ and in a repulsive hue. Never the less Claire was grateful to have a position at such a great firm directly out of college with so many of her fellow classmates working at the local Starbucks or retail store. She was the one who got to render product, product marketing plans and draw up creative presentations. Today was her first meeting with an actual client, and she was late.
Claire was lateto work that day
after staying up late all
Times have been tough for her and every month she has to send money home to her parents so they are able to afford food and clothes for her younger brother and sister. Needless to say, she was never fed from a silver spoon, but does her best to make ends meet and help her family in any way she can. She was the first one in her family to ever go to college. This was a huge accomplishment not only for herself, but for the town she had grown up in. She was often regarded to as the poster child that every parent had hoped their kids would turn into, but the overwhelming amount of drugs prevented them from becoming. Being smart in school often regarded a child as an outcast, a very lonely outcast at that. Even though her parents were unable to afford the semester payments that did not deter Claire from going out and demanding a higher education. All though college she worked hard, mostly finding any odd jobs she could get her hands on – babysitting, gardening, tutoring, egg donation, passing out flyers – everything short of dancing (she refused to ever let her life come to that). Her life presented her with many obstacles that she had to overcome. Although it was tough, she was able to get out of the trailer park alive and stayed away from the overwhelming drug use that inhabited there. She was one of the very few who did.
Rushing to work, she knew her boss would not understand her situation, she was deathly afraid of his anger issues and had been told repeatedly that is she did not fix her tardiness she would soon be fired. Having just finished her business degree at the nearby state college, she could not afford to have her first “real” job end in such a disappointing manner. It would forever taint her résumé. Not only could she just risk the hurt to her resume and her professional career, she needed the money desperately. Living paycheck to paycheck, trying to support not only herself but her family was a tough chore for any 22 year old to take on. Her younger sister is only 6 years old and just starting ballet this year. Claire wants to give her as much opportunity in life to excel as possible. She surely had not had any advantages while she was growing up. He younger brother is being groomed as the man of the house. At 10 years old, he is active in sports such as football and baseball, but desperately needs a new mitt. He has been using a mitt that his father used when he was a kid. Her parents however are a whole different story. They are people that Claire never aspires to be. Her mother, God bless her heart, loves her children to death, but cannot see how her persistent cocaine use hurts them so. She was able to maintain a year sober, but after her father fell victim to a horrible heart attack at a young 45 years old, she reverted back to her old ways. Her father, has worked extremely hard to make ends meet, but his limiting factor has always been a lack of education. He had once been successful in hard labor – construction, landscaping – but
can no longer take part in these professions due to his heart condition. The nitrates that he must take every time he begins to conduct even the least strenuous of work forces him to stop and take an extended break. He is the work horse of the family.
In a hurry she forgot to look before crossing the busy downtown street that ran perpendicular to her small downtown loft. Dodging a cab, she dropped her reports. Manila folders and crisp white papers flew all around her. One such report was a research project that she had spent countless hours working on, spending late evenings after her shift at the diner working on because Mr. Shiner had continuously insisted that it was vitally important to the success of the company and needed to be completed yesterday. Everything with her should have been done yesterday. “This surely will get me fired, I know how much Mrs. Shiner hates to have smudges or even the slightest crease on her paperwork,” Claire thought to herself. She scrambled to pick up the papers from the rainy street and out of the path of all the muddy feet. As she picked up the papers and put them back into her book bag, she wiped the mud off the papers and onto the back of her pant legs. Claire never had the hippest of clothes, but one could always see that her dedication to doing the best she could always superseded her fashion savvy. She continued to think of what Mrs. Shiner would have to say about the mud stains on herw presentation. God forbid she had to reproduce the papers again after all the hard work she has already put into them.

POUREDCOFFEEHER
The door slammed in to Shephanie, knocking her coffee out of her hand and down her shirt. As he pulled the piece of paper from his face, a string of mud pelted his tailored suit.
BEN WALKED PAST CLAIRE, WITHOUT A THOUGHT OF HELPING HER.
SIGNIFICANTEVENTS
UNIVERSETo him, he was the center of the universe, and his arrogant stride showed just this. Everything had always gone his way – from being voted the most popular guy in high school, to president of his fraternity in college and landing a high paying, low responsibility job for a cigarette firm – he had never been put in the position to feel much hardship. He always dressed in expensive Armani suits. His favorite ones were those with the white pinstripes. It makes him standout; he calls them his “power suits.” If there was ever a way to gain a leg up on the competition, Ben would find it. To others, he looks like he has money, power, and ultimate success. His Rolex watches, Stacey Adams shoes, Louis Vuitton wallet, diamond encrusted rings and Armani suits showed the power he wish he possessed, but in reality it was all a cove rup for his never endless search for acceptance.
As a boy, Ben’s parents always expected the very best from him and would never tolerate mediocrity. Scared of disappointing his parents, Ben learned to put on a powerful and careless front. This is ultimately where his problems and insincerity towards all other people began. He began to find that if he didn’t care about others, and only focused on himself, then he would never hurt or fail. This made his pare-nts proud, at least initially, and it was a streak that would follow Ben though the rest of his life. Little did he know, nor did his parents ever tell him, but they hated the man that Ben had become. He had become completely self centered. All parents wish the best for their children, but Ben had taken it too far and only focused on the things that mattered most to him. They would have liked for him to be more considerate of other’s feelings and for him to be a blessing to society. Like most mornings, he had a typical argument with his wife as he was leaving the house and wanted nothing more than his usual cup-o’-joe and to get to work to see his secretary, the subject of the recent fights with his wife. His secretary was a much younger female who was obviously hired solely on the length of her legs as they flowed from her required miniskirt and perkiness of her breasts peeking through her form fitting, low cut dress shirt.
Ben’s credit card bills had been increasing at an unusually quick rate due to his “lunch meetings” at upscale restaurants and oddly enough Victoria’s Secret. His wife had long suspected Ben of having extramarital affairs, but was being pampered so much herself that she did not confront him in regards to his straying heart. She was upset, but cared for the fragile situation her daughter was in more, and didn’t want to upset her with the idea that her mother and father may be having marital problems.
As he reached the other side of the street, he strode towards his destination where he would obtain his usual fix. The scent of java infiltrated his nose as he approached. A sort of calm overcame him just as strongly as a cigarette smoker taking their first puff of that cancer stick for the first time in a week. Ben never did take up smoking even though he worked for one of the foremost cigarette companies of the United States, he cared too much about his appearance and physique to ever smoke or turn his teeth yellow. He would have a triple espresso instead to jump start his metabo-lism for the day and shed off a few hundred calories before lunch. Just as he opened the door, a gust of wind picked up and blew one of Claire’s mud stricken papers in to his face. He immediately released the heavy metal door, sending it right into the face of Stephanie, causing her coffee to topple down her shirt. He apologized insin-cerely, but was too busy admiring her perky breasts in the newly drenched dress shirt to offer even the slightest of sincere apologies.
CENTEROF HIS
Ben was called alot of things in his life, but a gentleman was never one of them. He was the type that only cared about what he had going on in his own life. He liked to call it self-assured.

EMILY WAS GROGGY AS SHE OPENED HER EYES IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM
Days later as she sat on top of the clean white sheets, she breathed in the now familiar scent of the hospital. With
her fingers shaking, she cautiously opened the black and white pages of the newspaper. She began to read the article
and tears quickly filled her eyes. She was staring at the face of the woman whose heart was now beating rapidly in
her own body. Hearing a small little knock on the door, she jumped slightly. Her father entered the room slowly,
looking slightly disheveled. Her mind wandered back to years ago, when he and her mother had looked happier - a time
before she got sick. “Her name was Melanie,” she whispered to her father as she handed him a photo. “Her husband
brought it to me today.” Ben looked down at his daughter and reached for the poloroid and he sighed heavily. He was
looking at the face that saved his daughter’s life.
Emily wasn’t like most fifteen year olds. She wasn’t like any age, for that matter. She was wise far beyond her years, she had the disease to thank for that, not that it was anything to be thankful for. Most of her memories are the sight of hospital ceilings and pale blue and pink curtians. There actually wasn’t a time Emily could remember when she was in real life, with real kids her own age. She missed school. Most kids her age hate school and would do anything just to be done, but never having the ‘normal’ school experience, Emily yearned for all of it. She knew she was lucky. Lucky to be living as long as she has. Her mother tells her she is a miracle. She didn’t like a miracle. She felt weak. She felt tired. She just wanted to sleep her life away. She would have done anything just to stay warm through the night. When she was born she had to be taken immediatly from her mother due to heart failure at such a tender age. Her parents were informed she wouldn’t live past a few days, a week at most, but now here she was. Fifteen years longer than anyone would have thought to expect or even hope for.
She loved to read. Her favorites were ones that took her to a faw away land. Ones without pain, suffering and disease. A magical place where there were potions to heal wounds, magical stones to fix internal injury and fogs in which you could mae anyone fall in love with you. Those were her favorite. To escape this world even for the slightest moment was a relief. For the first time she didn’t have to worry about taking her medication everyday, sitting in cold beds in hard rooms and nurses to match. The personnel at the hospital was seemingly faceless to her now. She had seen them so many times, most often in a drugged stuper, that they began to blur together in to one pawn nurse. The doctors weren’t much better at that. Her father always nagged her about being things like pessimistic, a downer and giving up too easily. She always wanted something to just show him a sliver of what she had to maintain on a daily basis. Getting up in the morning was hard enough with out topping it off with a smile, especially a fake one.
Emily was groggy as she opened her eyes in the hospital room. She looked around for her mother’s face. Once she found her familiar eyes, she tried to find a smile. “Did it work?” she asked, eagerly even with the exhaustion that was over coming her. her mother whispered as Emily drifted back into a peaceful slumber. Ben looked over to Emily’s mother with dampened eyes. “Do you think this is our fault, that she is like this?” He pondered, “Ya know, shifting her across the country because we couldn’t get along.” She stared back at him with a lost look engulfing her face. Getting up from her ridgid hospital chair she turned the corner and left the room, muttering something about getting coffee. On the other side of the wall she colapsed in to a pile of tears and emotion. All she could think of was the stress they put Emily through and how much she missed Ben despite the fights, the indescresions and the troubles.

Mothers and fathers who have ever had a little baby boy have had to become a master at the infamous “pee pee dance”. Couples everywhere jumping around the changing room, leaping for diapers, lunging for wet wipes, all in the short lived hope of keeping their shirts dry. There had to a better option out there, and there wasn’t... until now.

Over at Stanford, Deisseroth’s team was making the same discovery, and soon they were stopping worms with the yellow light.Other labs were already making flies leap into the air when exposed to blue light. And on The Tonight Show, Jay Leno had even joked about the technology with a clip in which he pretended to steer a “remote control” fly into George W. Bush’s mouth. The research was mushrooming, and dozens of labs were calling Deisseroth to ask for the genes. The new field was dubbed
optogenetics: optical stimulation plus genetic engineering. But neurons in petri dishes and in bugs were comparatively simple. Would optogenetics work in the staggeringly complex tangle of a mammalian brain? And could it be used to cure real brain illnesses?

In the summer of 07 a small team of Stanford graduate students dropped a mouse in to a plastic basin.
The mouse sniffed the floor curiously. It didn’t seem to care that a fiber-optic cable was threaded through its skull. Nor did it seem to mind that the right half of its motor cortex had been reprogrammed. One of the students flipped a switch and intense blue light shone through the cable into the mouse’s brain, illuminating it with an eerie glow. Instantly, the mouse began running in clockwise circles as though hell-bent on winning a murine Olympics. Then
the light went off, and the mouse stopped. Sniffed. Stood up on its hind legs and looked directly at the students as if to ask, “Why the hell did I just do that?” And the students whooped and cheered like this was the most important thing they’d ever seen.
He is paralyzed from stage 5 parkinson’s disease.
This isMelvin.
Science has made some extraordinary leaps through our time, and it is on the verge of making one more. Through optogenetics and learning to harness the power of light, mobility can be acheived with virually no side effects.

The algea only reacts when it is exposed to light. How does it ‘see’? What makes it ‘act’?
In the early 1990s, a German biologist named Peter Hegemann was working with a single-celled bug called Chlamydomonas, or, less technically, algae. Under a microscope, the cell looks like a little football with a tail. When the organism is exposed to light, its tail wags madly, moving the cell forward.Hegemann wanted to know how this single cell, with no eye or brain, responded to light. How did it “see”? What made it “act”?
Answers slowly emerged: Hegemann and his colleagues found that part of the cell’s membrane is packed with coiled-up proteins. They theorized that when a photon hits one of those proteins, the molecule uncoils, creating a tiny pore in the membrane. Charged ions flow across the membrane, which makes the cell’s flagella move. And the whole shebang swims forward.
walk
In 2005, Zhang and Boyden repeated Tsien’s experiment.
This time, though, they had the right gene. They inserted it into a culture of neural tissue on a glass slide and poked a tiny electrode into one of the neurons so they would know when it fired. Then
they aimed blue light at it. (Channelrhodopsin reacts most strongly to light at 480 nanometers on the spectrum, i.e., blue.) Their apparatus looked like a microscope that spent its off-hours at the gym. It had a camera screwed into the eyepiece, a laser aimed at the slide, and big boxes of circuitry for amplifying the tiny current they hoped to see. If the cell fired, a huge in-your-face spike would appear on a
don’t walk
screen. And that’s exactly what happened. With every flash, another spike marched across the whiteness. They now had an On switch for neurons. But in the brain, it’s as important to inhibit neurons as it is to make them fire. As with computers, 0 is as crucial as 1; they needed an Off switch, too. When Boyden finished his PhD, he took an ap-pointment at MIT and began hunting for it. He found there was a
bacterial gene, halorhodopsin, that had properties suggesting it could do the opposite of channelrhodopsin. In 2006, Boyden inserted halorhodopsin into neurons and exposed them to yellow light.
They stopped firing. Beautiful.

For centuries, the rustic men and women of Wyoming have been brewing their own beers. After a long day, nothing tastes better than a real beer for real cowboys.

MAIN PROBLEM
With Wyoming being a rural area and low
population, mass productions are sometimes
not a good option for local brewers. Bottling
and labeling beer in house needed a simple,
quick solution.
SOLUTION
Re-usable bottles with ceramic snap
tops make bottling easy to do at the brewery.
Self adhesive labels and neck labels were
a great way for the small company to bottle
and brand the beer and packaging with
only a few employees.

Larry Caller only had one goal in mind when he started Bittercreek Brewery: to have a great tasting, freshly brewed local beer to come home to. After introducing new tastes like “Boar’s Tusk” and “A Beer Named Bob” Larry, along with the rest of Rock Springs, Wyoming was hooked. Now all they needed was a look to match the attitude of the brew.

MAIN PROBLEM
With Costco housing such a variety of
products, with not only their own
endorsement but competitor brands
as well, standing out can be a
challenge. New organization and
look for Costco brought challenges
as big as the store itself.
SOLUTION
The store first needed to be divided up in
to private labels and Kirkland branded items.
The new Kirkland look was manipulated
to fit each category of items, while keeping
Kirkland brand advocates in tune with
the new line of products.

Since it’s debut in 1983, people have come near & far to stock up on their favorite items across the country. With Costco housing both it’s sub-brand Kirkland as well as fellow competitor brands, standing out in a warehouse sized store can be a challenge. As any stock worker knows, organization is key to problems this large.

09 Thank you to my family and friends who’s love and support kept me sane. Thank you to my husband, who’s infectious spirit kept me believing in myself. Thank you to my teachers and mentors who have nurtured a dream in to a living career. Special thanks to Tom McNulty, Alfredo Muccino and Mary Scott. Thank you to the disbelievers, it was you who pushed me to 4 a.m. countless nights, just to prove that you were wrong.
