For as long as she can rememberpeople have been asking Mary tosing. She was 16 and still atboarding school in Dublin when shegave her first radio broadcast ofIrish traditional songs, accompanying herself on the Celticharp.

Her clear soprano voice, with itshaunting natural quality quicklygained her a large following inIreland and the British Isles, andshe was still under 21 by the timeshe had her own television serieson BBC.

Mary's marriage around that timeto the American poet, RichardSelig, a Rhodes scholar at Oxfordwhen they met, was short-lived.He died after fifteen months, leaving Mary to carry on her careeralone. More concerts followed, and

successful tours of Australia andNew Zealand. Suddenly theconcerts and broadcasts stopped:her records were still sold, butthere were no more liveappearances. Without tellinganyone Mary had become acontemplative Benedictine nun.

When health problems forced herto leave the monastery, she knewthat she must try singingprofessionally again, but wasuncertain about the reception shewould receive after a silence oftwelve years.

On 14th October 1977 Maryappeared on the "Rus.sell HartyShow" and in Russell's words "Shecame quietly to her chair andstormed her way into the heads andhearts of everyone". The next daythe London Weekend TVswitchboard was jammed with callsand Mary was invited back thefollowing week - somethingunheard of in the history of theshow.

On 5th November 1977 Marygave her "comeback" concert atLondon's Royal Festival Hall anddemonstrated to the capacity crowdthat she had successfullyembarked upon a new career. Shesang for the first time with a five-piece backing group and herrepertoire included contemporarysongs as well as some of her owncompositions. Each of the 25 songswas received with deafeningapplause - it was an extraordinarypersonal triumph, and at the endthe audience of 3,000 people stoodup and willed her back for encoreafter encore.

Maurice Rosenbaum writing inthe Telegraph said of the concert"But nothing heard or seen abouther could have prepared us for theimpact of her first London concerton Saturday night. From the firstcrystalline notes of her openingitem . . . to the final encore shesang with a purity of tone, asustained precision of pitch and a

total absorption such as I haverarely heard in folk or popularmusic. She sang nothing, in fact, that she did not adorn, to which shedid not add grace." The MelodyMaker said "We seem to have there-emergence of a very specialsinger possessing poise, grace anda compelling vocal strength."

In the past year Mary's successhas been like an avalanche - TheRoyal Festival Hall concert wasrecorded and the LP rush-releasedin December: that album, her firstnew recording for many years hasearned her a silver disc. The following February Maryundertook a nation-wide tour. She filled London's Royal AlbertHall and sold out two nights inDublin - her home town. She was

also rapturously received In NewYork's Carnegie Hall and Toronto'sMassey Hall. She has appeared onnumerous TV shows, has had herown specials on iTV and BBC, andhas been a repeated guest on"Stars on Sunday".

In July Mary took part in the"Golden Gala" at the LondonPalladium which was attended byPrincess Margaret and the PrimeMinister.

Between engagements and toursMary likes to spend as much timeas possible in her flintstone cottagewith roses around the door, in theheart of the country. She adoresplaying tennis and taking longwalks across the fields. She frequently returns to visit thecommunity at her old monastery, and they have been very supportiveto Mary in her return to the concertplatform.
