Welcome from the Fundraising Manager

Every year hundreds of people do something amazing in aid of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. Fundraising in the community covers many areas, including general donations and events organised by the Hospice, Support Groups, businesses and the general public. We are also fortunate enough to receive donations either given instead of flowers at funerals or in lieu of gifts to mark special celebrations. Whether it is organising a sponsored head-shave, taking part in one of our challenge events or putting money into a collection tin, we are always overwhelmed by the incredible support we receive.

A special thank you to the anonymous donor who makes a regular donation. We obviously cannot thank you personally, so we hope you will read this. The difference we are able to make to the lives of those we care for at the Hospice or in their own homes is only possible thanks to the creativity, dedication and generosity of our wonderful donors and volunteers.

During 2012 we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the fabulous Olympics and we all enjoyed the community spirit. Many of the high profile events suffered because of poor weather conditions, we at the Hospice did too. However, we move forward into 2013 and continue the community spirit with It’s A Knock Out, Marathons, Parachute Jumps, Raffles, Race Nights, Will Week and Learning to Dance, Sing and Run challenges.

One simple way you can help that will not cost you any money now, is to include in your Will a Legacy to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. Your wishes will live on and will make a difference to the future of local Hospice Care.

We continue to need your support so that we can provide care in Northern Warwickshire, so for whatever you have done or might do in the future – a sincere thank you.

£10 Transport – patients come into the Day Hospice from all over Northern Warwickshire. Your support at this level covers the cost of providing transport for 2 patients to and from the Day Hospice by minibus, volunteer drivers or ambulance.

£15 Therapy – aromatherapy and reflexology are used to help reduce anxiety and provide a feeling of well being. Your support at this level pays for one treatment for a Hospice patient.

£20 Good Food - many patients benefit from the delights of nutritional home cooking and enjoy the sociability of eating with others. Your support will contribute to a days culinary delights for our patients.

£40 Activities – the Activity Room enables patients to explore the world of art, nurturing creativity and uncovering hidden talents in a relaxed environment. Your support will provide activity materials

£50 Lymphoedema is a fluid which accumulates in tissues causing swelling in damaged lymph glands, a side effect of cancer and cancer treatment. For our patients, symptoms can be significantly improved with gentle massage and compression hosiery. Your support will provide 1 hosiery garment.

CQC-Care Quality Commission make a surprise visitThe Mary Ann Evans Hospice has received a glowing report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following a recent visit. Inspectors from the Government Department which inspects the standard of services provided at all Hospitals and Hospices were delighted with their findings. They found that the Hospice met the required level in all 6 key areas. It was inspected on patient respect, including and involving people who use the services, treatment and support to meet people’s needs, staffing, assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision and also record keeping.

Maggi Cole – Clinical Services Manager said “The Report stated that patients using the Hospice were happy with how they are consulted about every aspect of their care”. One patient said: “We are treated like royalty, the staff are all marvellous” and another commented: “It’s been a blessing coming here, I can’t begin to tell you how good it is.”

Liz Hancock – Chief Executive said: “We are delighted with the findings. A good report is confirmation for us that we are doing everything we need to. We are confident that we do a good job, so it is the Care Quality Commission confirming what we know. I would like to give my personal thanks to all the staff and volunteers who have actually helped us to achieve such a high level of care”.

Patients Facts:

• The Mary Ann Evans Hospice is an independent charity and receives only 27% government funding.

• Each year we help approximately 500 patients.

• Patient care and emotional support for both patient and their family is provided FREE OF CHARGE but not without cost.

• Approximately 26% of our patients have a non-cancer diagnosis.

• 80% of our patients who received end of life Hospice at Home care died at home in their preffered place of care.

• Approximately 55 patients per week visit the Lymphoedema clinic.

• The Bereavement Support Service helps, on average, 60 bereaved families every month.

Alan & Diane’s StoryDiane who is 54 and a patient at the Day Hospice has Huntingtons Disease, a progressive neurological condition which affects her mobility, speech and also causes involuntary movements.

Diane’s Husband Alan said; “Diane looks forward to attending the Hospice each week to meet up with other service users and the staff for various activities. She particularly enjoys the painting sessions with volunteer John. Painting gives her a feeling of achievement and purpose. The concentration and focus she uses when painting have helped to control her movements. Attending the day centre gives her a sense of independence, all be it with a little help and something to tell friends and family.

When Diane is at the Hospice it gives me peace of mind knowing she is in safe hands and being well looked after. It enables me to catch up with work and a few chores, or have a “quiet five minutes” to myself. I also know that if we have a problem, or just need a chat, the staff are always willing to listen and are only a call away. It’s not until you are affected by illness, directly or indirectly, that you begin to realise what a difference places like the Hospice and the staff and volunteers who work there can make to the lives of people who are facing a difficult time.”

Since our last Newsletter there have been significant developments in our services. As I explained earlier, our surprise visit from CQC confirmed that we are caring for our patients in the best possible way.

From April we face an uncertain future with our NHS funding following the introduction of the new commissioning arrangement. We hope that the local Clinical Commissioning Group (decision making GPs) will make end of life care a high priority.

Because of the funding uncertainties, we must rely on the innovation and ingenuity of our staff and volunteers to ensure we continue to generate enough funds to sustain existing and to further develop our much needed Hospice services.

As a development we are hoping to extend our Bereavement Service and are awaiting the result of a Government Grant Application, which would make the project possible. After a couple of difficult years the Retail and Fundraising Departments have started the year in a positive manner achieving above budget targets. Due to the ongoing success of our shops we are planning to open a specialist furniture shop in Nuneaton.

As with any organisation, we have utility bills to pay, we need to buy good quality food for use in the kitchen and any specialist equipment to make life easier for our patients. As well as donations, we welcome companies that donate their expertise. I would like to thank Burgis & Bullock Accountants who for many years have kept our accounts and finances on the straight and narrow. Also thank you to Graphic Press who help with our graphic design for posters and newsletters.

Following a conference held by Warwickshire LINk, soon to be Warwickshire HealthWatch, the Mary Ann Evans Hospice was approached to help develop a model of Compassionate Community in North Warwickshire. The Project is one in which Volunteers support frail and vulnerable people to remain active members of the community. Volunteers will be recruited from within the community, trained and supported to become involved on a weekly or monthly basis.

Ways to help the Mary Ann Evans Hospice for Free!Through a Bank AccountThere is a way you can give money to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice without actually giving away your own money. The Hinckley & Rugby Building Society which has branches across Warwickshire and Leicestershire offers it’s customers a Hospice Account. The Building Society will make a donation equating to one per cent of the account’s average balance each year. This money is paid by the company, not taken from the account holder. Donate Don’t DumpThere are all sorts of used and unwanted items we can make money from. Mobile phones, jewellery and foreign currency can all be given to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice who in turn recycle them or exchange them for cash. For example, an old phone which would otherwise be collecting dust in a drawer might be worth £3 or £4 to the Hospice.

Spring Clean your WardrobeWe can use your unwanted clothes, shoes and bags etc. Clothes in good condition can be sold in the Mary Ann Evans Hospice shops and those unsuitable for resale can be recycled for cash.

Set up a Clothing BankGet rid of the need for charity bags once and for all by arranging for a clothing bank to be set up in your workplace.

Rally your ColleaguesMany companies support charity events. You could nominate the Mary Ann Evans Hospice as your CHARITY OF THE YEAR and hold a series of events to raise money from sales, tombolas and raffles to sponsored challenges.

Give up your timeThere are countless ways in which you can help us by giving your time as a Volunteer. You could help out in the Charity Shops sorting clothes and greeting customers or become a Volunteer Driver for the Day Hospice or support the Fundraising Team in numerous ways.

Present AmnestyIf you have a pile of unwanted gifts, from a jumper that doesn’t fit to a set of toiletries you’ll never use, give them to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. These items can always be used as raffle and tombola prizes during the year.

Donate your Birthday GiftsInstead of receiving Christmas or Birthday presents, ask your loved ones to make a donation to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice in your name. We can make use of Gift Aid to increase the amount we receive too. For example a £5 donation can be worth just over £6 to us. You will receive a Gift Certificate as a token of appreciation.

About Hospice at HomeIn February 1994 Pat Groves and Jayne Walsh were part of a new service that the Mary Ann Evans Hospice are proud to call ‘Hospice at Home’. Jayne said; “At the time this was a very new concept to Hospice services, specialized Hospice care that could be provided within the patient’s own home, providing care and reassurance, not just for the patient, but for the patient’s family and friends as well.

At the time there was only one other Hospice at Home service in the country besides ours. As the years flash by it is amazing to see how the Hospice at Home team has developed and grown. We now have 11 staff members, working 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, giving respite and end of life care to hundreds of people in our community.

As a team we are close and share tears of joy and sadness. We are regularly asked “how can you do that job”. Well it is a very privileged and rewarding job, in the knowledge and

understanding that with help our team can make a difference to those families who need support through very tough times. What was at the heart of the service 19 years ago is fortunately still at the heart now!

The Hospice at Home Team are based at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and are independent of any other charity or health organisation. The Team work alongside GPs, District Nurses and Macmillan Nurses to provide appropriate support for respite and end of life care. With help from the Hospice at Home team, patients are able to receive end of life care in their own home rather than be admitted to hospital.

1994 The Hospice at Home service was launched with 6 staff to provide Hospice care to patients in their own homes. Firstly in Nuneaton, which expanded to include Bedworth and Bulkington and later into the whole of Northern Warwickshire

We are aiming to offer two ‘Memories of

Love’ events this year, which gives people the oppurtunity to attend a service to remember a loved one. This year we are hoping for warmer

weather to make full use of our attractive Garden.

‘Ribbons of Love’ is a bright and positive way of celebrating a special person in your life.

Once again there will be an area in the Hospice garden splashed with colour throughout the summer, with each length of colourful ribbon meaning something special to someone. In return for a donation to the ‘Ribbons of Love’ Appeal, you will receive a length of brightly coloured ribbon for you to write your own special personal message for someone who has brought colour to your life.

The ‘Ribbons of Love’ will remain on display throughout the summer months, bringing brightness and colour to everyone visiting the Hospice garden.

Gill said: “I looked around the Hospice garden at the end of one of our ‘Time to Remember’ evening events and was bowled over at what I saw. People in ones and twos were tying ribbons onto tree branches, fencing and shrubs and taking a few quiet moments to remember their loved ones. It was very poignant and special. Writing a message of love on a coloured ribbon and finding the right place in the Hospice garden has proved to be a meaningful gesture for many people.”

The Bereavement Service

The Bereavement Service continues to expand with two main strands of support: People requiring 1:1 sessions are quickly matched to a Bereavement Support Volunteer.

Also, we have over 50 people attending one of the ‘Jigsaw’ tea parties providing group support. In October we expanded the ‘Jigsaw’ events to offer people three different time slots.

The ‘Jigsaw’ Tea Parties are held on:

• The last Tuesday morning of the month from 10.30am to 12.00 noon at the Day Hospice.

• The last Tuesday afternoon of the month from 2.00pm to 3.30pm.

• The last Monday evening of the month from 7pm to 8.30pm. This is for sons and daughters who have lost a parent and for people who cannot attend

during the daytime.

A number of people who have benefited from the ‘Jigsaw’ events have written in to express the following sentiments:

LegaciesOne way to help the Hospice eventually, is to pledge your support NOW and leave a Legacy to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

A gift in a Will does not have to be a fixed amount of money. Recently a lady left her estate to her family apart from 2% which she left as a thank you gift to the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. The gift amounted to £5,000.

A legacy can make a significant difference and will touch the lives of so many people, giving support at a time when it is needed most.

If your estate is over the Inheritance Tax threshold (currently £325,000) it could save Inheritance Tax if you leave gifts to charity.

Please contact a Solicitor who can advise you on creating a Will or adding a Codicil to an existing Will.

Young Supporters help in so many ways!Young Friends are a group of students who have formed a support group and meet regularly to organise a variety of events. They work alongside the Fundraising Team helping to acheive our Fundraising goals with events such as cake sales, race nights, flash mob and are also planning a float for the Nuneaton Carnival.

Jaguar Enterprise Challenge In 2012 Enterprising students from 5 local secondary schools took part in the Annual Jaguar Enterprise Challenge. Jaguar Employees Charitable Fund donated £50 to each school and in total turned £250 into £7,600. WOW!

The Unipart Challenge raised a fantastic £3,355 by turning £50’s into serious money. Students from local primary schools had lots of fun and worked with Unipart staff to produce calendars, cake sales to name but a few of the ideas.

Many local schools support the Hospice by holding events, selling cuddly toys, having dress down days and organising sponsored walks.

We welcome support from young people from schools, youth groups and individuals.

‘Thank You’ Is Never EnoughStaff at Keuhne & Nagel, an international shipping company with an office in Minworth asked their staff to nominate charities to receive donations instead of sending Christmas Cards to their customers.

The nomination was made by Suzanne Croucher who reported; “For the last year of my husband’s life, the Hospice at Home nurses came to our house, on average, twice a week. David used to treat them as friends; he enjoyed chatting to them and putting the world to rights! If he felt well enough he would visit the Hospice where he would usually look forward to the quiz challenge, enjoy a tasty lunch and chat to other patients. After a couple of hours he would be exhausted, but if he felt up to it, he would read his book, use the computer, watch TV, or more often fall asleep.

The nurses and staff at the Hospice were always on hand to keep an eye on his condition, especially if he needed medication or oxygen or to just go home.

I cannot emphasise enough that Doctor Julia Grant, the Consultant in charge of his case and the Mary Ann Evans Hospice certainly provided us with the much needed support though this very difficult time in our lives. The staff were a shoulder to cry on and seemed to understand all our worries. The staff were able to organise so many things, even little things that made our lives that bit easier. With the focus on enjoying the moment and making the most of each day, helping and guiding us towards the inevitable moment when our lives would change forever.”

The nominations were analysed by a panel of staff and am delighted to announce that Daryl Ridgeway, Senior Vice President visited the Hospice to make an official presentation of £10,000.00. He said: “It was a real pleasure to visit the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and experience first-hand the wonderful care which is being delivered there. K & N are delighted to have received such a worthy nomination from Suzanne and following my time at the Hospice it will gives me great pleasure to report back to my colleagues that we have absolutely made the right choice of recipient and that our donation will be put to a very worthwhile cause.”

Suzanne continues: “As someone who has benefited from the service I feel so honoured to have had this opportunity to highlight the services of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, an organisation that many people are not aware of their needs for significant voluntary funding.”

Shop NewsWell, congratulations to all the shops for an excellent year of trading in spite of the many challenges we faced; mainly the wash out of a summer, but also flooding at Books Revisited, our Coleshill Book Shop. The damage resulted in stock being unsaleable and shelving and flooring having to be replaced. The Volunteers and Staff were marvellous and in true Coleshill style the shop was up and open after a short closure. Hopefully 2013 will be kind to us all; Staff, Volunteers and Customers alike.

We are very pleased to have installed a Gift Aid till system which will result in extra funding for the Hospice. When donors donate to the Book Shop, if they are tax payers and sign the necessary form we can claim back from HMRC an extra 25% on top of the sales of the donated items. A brilliant income stream.

Don’t Dump It, Donate It

You may think your old clothes, shoes, books, bedding or towels are of no use to anyone - but think again!

The Mary Ann Evans Hospice can make good use of almost anything. Good quality clothes, shoes and handbags can be sold in our charity shops, as can DVDs, books, toys, household items and even furniture.

Worn out clothing, threadbare towels, bedding or other textiles that are obviously not fit for sale can still be of value to the Hospice. These can be recycled for cash.

Volunteer Facts:

We have over 250 Volunteers supporting the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.

We have 28 Volunteers who have received a 20

year Badge of Service

More than 1040 journeys were made last year by

our Volunteer Drivers who transport Patients to and

from the Day Hospice.

Volunteers in the Fundraising Department

on average count around £14,000 each year in

loose change that has been donated to the

Hospice.

Our Volunteers contribute approximately £278,148

of valuable support each year.

What a fantastic sum!

Why I Volunteer!Volunteers give their time for a variety of reasons. On retirement many volunteers are active and want to carry on being purposeful, so volunteering in the shops, driving patients, gardening or fundraising are just some of the opportunities available. Some volunteers offer their services to relieve their loneliness, a great way to get to know people of like minds. We also have volunteers who know first-hand about the services of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and wish to repay the kindness given to their loved ones.

Volunteer Loraine said: “I have been a volunteer for the Mary Ann Evans Hospice for about 7 years and I love it! One morning each week I work in the kitchen at the Day Hospice in Nuneaton helping to prepare lunches for the Patients. On Saturdays I work in the Hospice Book Shop “Books Revisited” in Coleshill. However, use of the word “work” is, perhaps, not exactly accurate. ‘I thoroughly enjoy myself’ might be a better way of putting it!

I love being part of the team at the Book Shop and the Day Hospice and look forward to visiting each week. The atmosphere in the Day Hospice is warm, friendly and welcoming both to patients and their families, as well as volunteers and it is a delightful place in which to volunteer. The Book Shop, along with the other Hospice shops raise much needed funds, which is only thanks to the donations received from the community.

Being able to give my time and efforts to working for the good of local people who are going through difficult times is extremely fulfilling as well as enjoyable. As I said before, I just love it!”

SUMMER SUNFLOWER SCULPTURE TRAIL COMES TO NUNEATONAn exciting Arts Event is coming to Nuneaton this summer. Pioneering Nuneaton Artists Alisha Miller and Joanne Lole, with the support of the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, have secured £20,000 from Operation Footfall to create a Sunflower Sculpture Trail, aiming to increase visitors to the town centre.

The artists will be working with local businesses, community groups and local artists to decorate a series of 7 foot and 3 foot sunflower sculptures which will be placed within the town centre to form a sculpture trail throughout September.
