INTRODUCTION
The following list contains the names of all the Martyrs of EnglaBd and Wales of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They are divided into five groups and distinguished typographically as follows:
1. Canonized Martyrs (in @[~ lCngltsb). 2. Beatified Martyrs, whose Cause of Canonization has been
officially re-assumed (in BOLD CAPITALS).
3. Other Beatified Martyrs (in Bold 1'ype). 4. Venerable Martyrs (in Bold Italics).
5. Dilati: Martyrs whose Cause has been postponed until further evidence of their martyrdom is forthcoming (listed on pp. 39-40). .
A dagger (t) is used before a name to indicate members of the group of sixty-three Martyrs who were beatified equipollently (per modum cultus) by Pope Leo XIII on 29th December, 1886 and 13th May, 1895. The remainder of the Blessed Martyrs were beatified by Pope Pius XI, after a formal Process, on 15th December, 1929, St John Fisher and St Thomas More were canonized by the same Pope on 19th May, 1935.
These results were achieved after much labour by men whose names will always be associated with the Cause of the English and Welsh Martyrs. In re-issuing this pamphlet the present VicePostulators would like to acknowledge the debt they owe to these priests: Fr John Morris S.J., Dom Bede Carom O.S.B., Fr John Hungerford Pollen S.J., Canon Edwin Burton, Mgr Philip Hallett, Fr Charles Newdigate S.J.
Under the presidency of His Eminence Cardinal Godfrey, the Archbishop of Westminster, the united Hierarchy of England and Wales at their Low week Meeting 1960, in a letter dated 27th April petitioned the Holy Father, Pope John XXIII, for permission to re-assume the Cause of Canonization of a selected group offorty English and Welsh Martyrs.

Introduction
All that is now required for the Canonization of these forty Martyrs are two miracles granted by God in response to the joint invocation of these Martyrs. May almighty God soon work these miracles as a testimony to the truth for which the Martyrs died.
The re-assumption of the Cause has made it necessary to :revise and re-issue Fr Charles Newdigate's admirable hand-list of the Martyrs. Since it was last issued in 1935 much further information has been made available. More than seventy corrections of fact have been made. They concern for the most part the day and year of martyrdom, place of birth and education and other biographical details. An alphabetical index of the Martyrs has been added. The bibliography has' been brought up to date and at the same time restricted to books still in print. .
We trust that any further corrections of fact will be brought to our notice, so that future editions of this pamphlet may be made as free from error as is possible.

PRAYERS
to obtain the Canonization of Forty of the Blessed Martyrs of England and Wales
I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the Word of God and for the testimony which they held; and they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, 0 Lord, holy and true, dost Thou not judge and vindicate our blood from them that dwell on the earth? (Apoc. 6).
y. Beneath the throne of God all.the Saints cry aloud, IY'. Vindicate our blood, o Lord our God.
Let us pray.
Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that we, who admire in Thy Martyrs the courage of their glorious confession, may witness in ourselves the power of their loving intercession.
o God, who dost glorify those who glorify Thee, and who art honoured in the honours of Thy Saints, vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, by the solemn judgement of Thy Church to glorify the blood of the Martyrs who have been put to death in England and Wales for the testimony of Jesus. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. IY'. Amen.
Our Father. Hail Mary. I believe in God.

'For some years I have used the RSV text in my daily private reading of the Bible. For me its great attraction is that it refrains from straining after style and is content to give in very plain language the English version of the original text ••. I recommend this version
to the clergy and the faithful of the Catholic Church.'
H. E. CardilUl! Heenan .'I rejoice that Catholics in this
country now have a version which isofsuch acknowledged excellence and of such great potential fruitfulness.'
Rt Re,. Bishop Butler OSB 'At last . •• we have the whole Bible in a version we and our separated brethren can share.' .
