WELCOME . . .to our Spring Newsletter

Firstly I’d like to wish you avery Happy New Year and ahealthy and peaceful 2011. I want to thank all the staffand volunteers for theirmarvellous response to theextremely snowy weather atthe end of last year. Everyone

worked so hard to keep the hospice openand to enable us to continue to care for ourpatients during the terrible weather. It’s been an eventful few months here at theMartlets – we said a temporary goodbye toour InPatient Unit in September, as theymoved over to Harmony House so that therefurbishment could start on the InPatientUnit. The first phase of the work is completeand we’ve been able to welcome everyoneback with open arms. It was very quiet herewithout them! I think the InPatient Unit islooking fantastic now, refreshed andrefurbished. Unfortunately the price we paid for this wasreal disruption to parts of the garden. Whilewe have saved and protected as much as wecould there is need for some real attentionand restoration work. So this is why we arelaunching our garden appeal - the garden ishugely important to our patients and theirfamilies and we want to return it to itsbeautiful state as soon as we can. On pageeleven you can find out how to help theHospice garden grow. Everyone who supportsthe appeal will be invited to a summer gardenparty so you can see how your money hashelped to create a beautiful, peaceful garden. I look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you for your continued support. Very Best Wishes.

NEWS from the Hospice

We’re appealing for local 4x4 drivers to volunteertheir time and help out in the snowy weather. Ice and snow make it incrediblyhard for our hospice at home team to reach their patients. Before Christmas wewere supported by Efficiency Direct, who very kindly offered us the use of a 4x4vehicle with driver – Caroline, our CEO told us why this kind of help is so vital.“Efficiency Direct enabled a number of our staff to get out to their patients duringthe extremely snowy weather last month - we appreciate this remarkably kindand thoughtful assistance. Our patients at home are really very vulnerable in thesecold and icy conditions, I know it gave everyone real peace of mind to be able tocontinue caring for our patients. To prepare for the next bout of snowy weatherwe’re asking local 4x4 drivers to offer a few hours of their time – this will beinvaluable support for the Hospice as without it we will find it hard to visit ourpatients in the community.”

If you can help us reach our patients despite the snow then please contact theHR team directly on 01273 273400.

One of our refurbished rooms

www.themartletshospice.co.uk Martlets Hospice NEWS 3

Welcome Home . . . Just before Christmas we were very happy to welcome back ourpatients and staff from the InPatient Unit.

Thanks to the grant from the Department of Health we’ve now got amodernised InPatient Unit with new floors, windows and doors in allpatient rooms as well bright and colourful soft furnishings and re-arranged bathrooms. It’s not just patients who have benefitted fromthe refurbishment; our staff are enjoying fresh, newly painted officesand better storage facilities for equipment. Not to mention the newwet room style bathrooms and ensuites to the family rooms thataccommodate wheelchairs which will make showering for patients, both independent and assisted, much easier.

Work is continuing on the new build part of the refurbishment. TheSacred Space - we will be looking for a permanent name for this room– and the Patient Activity Room are taking shape and will be finishedby the spring.

A Big Thank You One of the dilemmas facing ourmanagement team before therefurbishment of the InPatient Unit, washow to continue to care for our patientswith all the disruption of a major re-furbishment? Thanks to our ex-colleagueClaire Ferrari’s connection to HarmonyHouse, a newly opened and nearby nursinghome, the answer emerged. LastSeptember our patients and staff from theIPU moved to Harmony House on OldShoreham Road – for 12 weeks. TheDirectors had kindly agreed to donate 13of their rooms for our use. Without thisoffer of help we simply would not havebeen able to continue caring for ourpatients; we would have had to close theInPatient Unit. We would like to thank thestaff, residents and their families atHarmony House for this kind andgenerous support. It was a major upheaval

for both sides, but the nursing home staffmade the transition as easy as possible. Asa way of saying thank you we’ll beproviding on-going training in palliative careto the staff at Harmony House to helpthem deliver the highest standards ofquality nursing care to the local community.

“We are happy to have been ableto help the Martlets with continuingtheir valuable work during theirextension. Our residents, familiesand staff enjoyed having the hospicewith us and are now benefittingfrom the quality trainingarrangements provided. We havesince been inspected by CQC andachieved a very good report(available on the CQC website)which shows us to be totallycompliant and a good nursinghome. We are now beginning to fillup the rooms donated to theHospice with our own residentsand hope to continue working withthe Martlets in the future.” Said Claire Ferrari of Harmony House.

“All the staff were so wonderfully supportive fromthe person who does the vacuuming all the way tothe top.” Philippa’s husband John was cared for bythe Martlets at Harmony House.

“It’s the gas cooker” she told me “it was damagedwhen I moved house, I’ve only just moved but now itdoesn’t work and I’ve got no money to pay for a newone. We haven’t had a hot dinner for days now.”The broken gas cooker belonged to the patient Cecile had come to see.Cecile is one of our Volunteer Benefit Advisors, and sees cases like thepatient with the broken cooker on a regular basis. She works with Sheilaand between them they help patients and their families’ access around £1million pounds worth of missed benefits every year. Both volunteers haveyears of benefit advice experience, they visit patients in their homes andmay work with them, alongside their families, for several months at a time.

It’s not just about filling in forms and offering benefits advice, ourvolunteers help patients with advice on legal and employment issues.Often patients haven’t written a Will, after all, writing a Will isn’t free and if

you’re on a very low income it may seem impossible. This is a situation that both advisors have encountered. Luckily they’re able to help;not only offering advice on why making a Will is so important but also giving a helping hand financially as hardship grants can be availablefrom Macmillan Cancer Support.

There’s quite a lot of detective work involved in this role. “To really help people you need to spend time with them to get a full pictureof their lives” explained Sheila. Cecile agreed “The key to getting a successful conclusion is to listen intently to what the patient says - apassing reference to a family member or something to do with their condition may reveal an entitlement the patient had neverconsidered or one that has been overlooked. It’s this astute listening that has resulted in substantial back-dated payments from theDepartment of Work and Pensions for our patients.”

Incredibly the highest of these payments has been nearly £20,000 - this amount of money can make life so much easier for patients whoare terminally ill. Shelia explained that being able to get money for people; to make their lives easier was, for her, one of the best parts ofthe job. For Cecile it’s passing on knowledge “The fact that the information I give people can make such a difference is one of myfavourite things about this kind of work” she told us.

How to get involved If you’ve got experience of giving benefits advice and would like to help us please get in touch. You’ll need to be able to make a weeklycommitment and have your own transport. You’ll receive ongoing training so you’re up to date with any changes in the benefits system, and you’ll be well supported by the Hospice staff and the Welfare Benefits team co-ordinator.

Contact our volunteer co-ordinators on 01273 273400 for more information.

The Hospice garden has always been an important place

of relaxation and healing for our patients and their

families. A beautiful, calm place to spend precious

time with loved ones.

Building works are currently underway

to refurbish and extend the InPatient

Unit. Some areas of the garden have

been lost to the building extension

whilst other new garden areas will

be created by the removal of the

perimeter bank. We’ve removed

plants where we can to keep them

safe during the disruption.

All this disruption means that we need to

redesign and rejuvenate our garden.

What’s Needed? Hard landscaping including creating

new paths and resurfacing existing

ones, purchasing soil, chippings,

garden furniture, lighting and

paving are all included on our

wish list.

The centre of the new garden

has been designed to work as a

courtyard accessible to all, with paths

wide enough to accommodate bed

bound patients and seating areas to enjoy the

sunshine or shade. To tarmac the garden paths

will cost around £10,000, we also want to light

the garden which will cost £1,500.

Outside patient rooms, the flower beds will be a mix

of delicate Acers, perennials and fragrant shrubs

like lavender so in the summer the delicate scent

will waft into patients’ rooms. In a shady corner

there’ll be a calm Japanese style seating area with

bamboo and gently trickling water.

The bank area running from the new Patient Activity

Room will become a terraced area, using reclaimed

railway sleepers. The creation and planting of this area

will cost £3,000.

How You Can Help You can help us transform our garden by making a donation

to help cover the cost of a group of plants, new seating, or

maybe a new path. Whatever you can give will help return

our garden to its former glory. We need to raise £30,000

from this appeal to transform the Hospice gardens. If

we raise more than this, the extra money will

go towards patient care.

Remember a Loved One Every donation made towards the Martlets

Garden may be dedicated in memory of

a loved one. All the gifts received can be

recorded in the Book of Garden Gifts which will

be kept on permanent display at the Hospice.

Everyone who makes a donation to this appeal

will be invited to a Garden Party this summer

– you’ll be able to see firsthand the garden

you have helped transform.

How to Donate Complete the donation form enclosed in this

mailing or send your donation with details

of your name or your loved one s name if

you’d like it to be recorded in our Book
