    WITH MARK ANDERSON

Newcastle’s Sunday Quayside market has been around since Adam was a lad - and my, how it’s changed!

Gone are the rails of polyester leisurewear and 2-for-£1 buckets, replaced by a lively and eclectic mix of arts, crafts, vintage clothing, and artisan foods.

With my daughters Katie, 10, and Charlotte ,16, it makes for an unusually harmonious outing.

I’m there for the food, particularly the bratwurst stall’s barbecued sausages and sauces I remember from living in Germany in the 80s, and the stalls loaded with artisan breads, chutney, cakes, biscuits, and sweets.

Charlotte favours the vintage clothes stalls, vinyl records and handmade jewellery, while Katie gets very excited about imported Japanese Manga comics and old-fashioned sweets in paper bags.

For pure entertainment value, check out David Nash’s handmade leather goods stall loaded with wallets, bags, purses and iPad cases. Hand lettered signs include ‘Large Ladies Purses: The purses not (necessarily) the ladies’, and David is a joy to haggle with.Quayside, every Sunday

I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to a wide selection of music, and Newcastle’s scene is in rude health with something to please fans of every genre. So, if you prefer a little more meat to your beats or swing in your soul, there’s likely to be a venue where you can get your kicks.

Head of Steam offers a variety of heavy rock this month, with grunge metallers Edenthorn’s EP launch on July 12 a highlight. Also on the radar for fans of the heavier musical persuasion is Trillians. Recently saved from closure, the traditional rock bar plays host to punk rockers GBH on July 20.

Digital may be a mecca for clubbers but local promoter Think Tank? is adeptly programming some great emerging acts, too. NYC’s The Slackers bring ska, reggae, dub and soul sounds to the venue on July 9.

Other venues of note include the proudly independent Globe, with live music and club nights where pretty much anything goes; soul and funk mecca Hoochie Coochie, which has quite the reputation for superb live acts; and The Bridge Hotel, which plays host to cracking local songwriters on a regular basis.Claire Dupree is editor of NARC.
