He Being Dead Yet Speaketh. A gathering of quotes by individual Christian men and women from the past - These are uploaded on the anniversary of their ‘falling asleep’ and intended to inspire us, as we read their words, to follow their good example. Martin Luther

Died

18th February 1546

I would rather obey God than work miracles.

God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.

Sin is, essentially, a departure from God.

Hell is paved with good intentions.

For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel.

Love is an image of God, and not a lifeless image, but the living essence of the divine nature which beams full of all goodnes.

Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your God

You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.

What is to become great is to begin small.

Either sin is with you, lying on your shoulders, or it is lying on Christ, the Lamb of God. Now if it is lying on your back, you are lost; but if it is resting on Christ, you are free, and you will be saved. Now choose what you want

The glory of Scripture is to be found in the Pronouns.

Before I translated the New Testament out of the Greek, all longed after it; when it was done, their longing lasted scarce four weeks. Then they desired the books of Moses; when I had translated these, they had enough thereof in a short time. After that, they would have the Psalms; of these they were soon weary, and desired other books. So it will be with the book of Ecclesiastes, which they now long for, and about which I have taken great pains. All is acceptable until our giddy brains be satisfied; afterwards we let familiar things lie, and seek after new.

Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave.

The moment I consider myself and Christ as two, I am finished.

The recognition of sin is the beginning of salvation.

We ought not to criticize, explain or judge the Scriptures by our mere reason but diligently, with prayer, meditate thereon and seek their meaning.

The Bible is the cradle wherein Christ is laid.

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.

They gave our Master a crown of thorns. Why do we hope for a crown of roses?

To do so no more is the truest repentance.

If I cannot find my spiritual experiences in the Bible ,they are not from the Lord but from the devil.

To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.

Good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works.

My temptations have been my Masters in Divinity.

The law works fear and wrath; grace works hope and mercy.

Faith is permitting ourselves to be seized by the things we do not see.

Peace if possible, but truth at any rate.

I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess.

I more fear what is within me than what comes from without.

The fewer the words, the better the prayer.

Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.

Evening Prayer

My Heavenly Father, I thank You, through Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, that You have protected me, by Your grace. Forgive, I pray, all my sins and the evil I have done. Protect me, by Your grace, tonight. I put myself in your care, body and soul and all that I have. Let Your holy angels be with me, so that the evil enemy will not gain power over me. Amen.

The first thing I ask is that people should not make use of my name, and should not call themselves Lutherans but Christians. What is Luther? The teaching is not mine. Nor was I crucified for anyone. How did I, poor stinking bag of maggots that I am, come to the point where people call the children of Christ by my evil name?

Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.

Thee, O Christ have I known,Thee have I loved,Thee have I taught,Thee have I trusted,

Into thy hands I commend my spirit.
