Migration and pitfalls

Tunneling pitfalls
● Unpredictable latency with 6to4 and teredo● 6in4 tunnels have predictable latency, but
static provisioning of 6in4 tunnels is cumbersome
6to4 traffic
Teredo traffic
PPPoE
● Manageable from an ISPs perspective (package/service management)
● IP6CP + DHCPv6 for dynamic configuration of endpoint
● Exactly the same as PPPoE for IPv4
Native
● Optimum from a networking perspective● Circuit separation/security ?
– Could be implemented at ethernet level (VLAN etc.)
● Package/Service Management ?– Can be applied locally, but not really easily
manageable in a large scale environment
Pitfalls on the consumer side
● Very few routers available with IPv6 support● Inconsistency of router vendor
implementations● Currently no DHCPv6 support on our platform● Windows XP needs IPv4 transport for
resolving DNS● Non-IPv6 capable consumer routers block
automatic roll-out.
Pitfalls on the carrier side
● All our carriers deliver IPv6● Some carriers still don't have a full-table and
the implementation of their peering agreements can be unfortunate.
● Some carriers still have to learn, not to take their IPv4 filtering policies and “just” to apply them to IPv6.
Where is the killer app ?
● Various websites have enabled IPv6● We are Google IPv6 weblisted● When Google end of last year enabled
YouTube, IPv6 skyrocketed
