• He was a Slovak painter and illustrator. • He is regarded as the founder of

Modernist Slovak art in 20th century. • Martin Benko was born on September

21, 1888 in Kostolište in the west of Slovakia in the region called Zahorie.

• He got the title National Artist. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Martin.

Benka's ornamental style was influenced by folk art.

In his paintings he displayed Slovak nature, clouds, plains , fields and hills and also people.

He liked to show people at work. Benka visited many regions where people lived simply, in communion with nature.

With his paintings he expressed love, respect and admiration to Slovakia, its nature and people.

He attended Art private school of Czech painter Emanuel Neumann in Vienna.
