Hello dear readers of Martial Science in Engli-sh. We begin this New Year with new goals and aspirations. Always the beginning of a new year is a new opportunity to rethink new goals or reaffirm those we set out and we have not been able to materialize. Analyze our position to face the obstacles of the past and those errors that did not allow us to advance our objective.

I believe that now that is just beginning of the year is the ideal moment to guide our lives for the right path and purify our hearts , and that’s why I’d like to show you a simple technique to help us become better people.

Evening review exercise is simple. It is done before bed, we took a comfortable position, which may be the lotus position or one of its variants, also the exercise can be done sitting in a common chair. Once adopted the position we will relax the whole body, paying attention to the shoulders (which are not raised), back (should be straight), the eyebrows (should not be wrinkled) chin slightly tilted down. After reaching a good relaxation we begin to display all the actions we have done during the day, starting from the moment we sat down to do the exercise back until we got up in the mor-ning. It’s like rewinding a videotape from the credits until the beginning of the film.

Most important thing is try to go chaining ac-tion with another, and as a fundamental task is find what time of day we did not act in the right way, without falling into remorse or self-puni-shment, exercise is intended that the next day we fix the error caused the previous day.

For example:

In my recap I detected that I had been discour-teous to an old lady trying to cross the street, she had asked me to help her, but since I was in a hurry to go to work I pretended that I had not heard and went by without helping her . What not to do? Stay all night thinking and regretting that I’m bad, I’m a degenerate, that old woman could be my mother and I would not want so-meone else to do the same, I’m at the bottom of the scale as a human being. We not achieve anything with these thoughts, society does not benefit at all with these feelings of guilt, I did not reach any achievement. What should I do? the next day I try to help someone else and help

them cross the street, I took the packages and what they need, so this way I’m able to help the needy and I’m better about myself because I was able to learn the lesson and choose to do good, which is ultimately the most transcen-dental that a man can do in his life.

The fundamental importance of this exerci-se lies in the memory training and discover through your self-watching your own mistakes and be able to fix them. A daily practice throu-

ghout the course of the white belt student pro-vide the firm foundation for subsequent years and help in conjunction with other exercises the degree to develop mastery of his own phy-sical body. Improving as a man in the service of humanity.

The Study of Imbalance and UnbalanceKaiso Yumak F.Alonso

Page 17: Martial science magazine feb 2016

FEBRUARY/2016 17

One of the characteristics of the stu-dies of theoretical and practical nature of our Ryuha is the approach where our pupils prac-tice real and effective traditional martial con-cepts applied to our form and execution.

Among these is the study of the principles of imbalance and unbalance. Rarely it is known that like everything in this universe produced by an action, brings with it a specific reaction.

First we must know the concept of each gene-rally, and then analyze the aspects that charac-terize them.

UNBALANCE ( Fukinkō ) : It is the action that we perform upon THE ADVERSARY to provoke the loss of stability (Kuzushi).

IMBALANCE ( Kuzushi ) : It’s the result of the action that provokes an ADVERSARY to LOSE STABILITY.

The Kuzushi, as applied here, is divided into 8 basic directions where you are going to lead the adversary to a effectively perform throwing or takedown. These directions are known as Ha-

Kaiso Yumak Alonso Founder of Sekai Daibukan Bugei Renmei

ppo not Kuzushi (Imbalance in the 8 direc-tions). These are learned using a basic sche-me or pattern vector ( tekki ) which greatly helps the student to locate the angles where to attack his opponent’s void.

Page 18: Martial science magazine feb 2016

18

These 8 vectors are logically divided into two groups of 4, some known as central base vectors and the other four as the four voids or Shikaku.

These are usually located in the front and rear diagonals. Always bearing in mind that this may vary according to the point of refe-rence and the position of the Tori in regards to the Uke . Since nothing is permanent and is constantly evolving , the same idea applies to Budo techniques .

Whether to run a throwing technique or a takedown, these above pointers are impor-tant to keep in mind. As previously shown for many people the imbalance and unba-lance are the same while in reality they are not. It is true that they are connected but the more accurate statement is that one causes the other so we reaffirm that one causes the other to occur (an action causing a reaction ) .

All angular movement causes that purpose either in advance or delayed by one opening which is known as Sukima , this allows the use of Shikaku with flawless execution and effectiveness of the techniques .

The Sukima also ensures that the body of Tori and Uke not converge in a perilous way which could jeopardize the technical result.

Our Ryu we guarantee that our members have a knowledge beyond the mere tech-nical, seeking that they can back up their martial level with solid and real knowledge.

But I knew that I wanted to have not only a german but an international event.

But like Alan Goldberg I had one of the best locations in the world, I had my hometown, the beautiful City of Munich, the capitol of proba-bly one of the most popular states: Bavaria! And people want to come and visit Munich not only from distant countries but also from all parts of Germany.

Easy to reach from everywhere with a large amount of accomodations in all prize ranges for every wallet.

Esarhaddon, King of Assyria

Teachings of the Budha

by Leo Tolstoy Translated by L. and A. Maude (This is a wonderful story quoted by Thich Nhat-Hanh in The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching.)

The Assyrian King, Esarhaddon, had conquered the kingdom of King Lailie,

had destroyed and burnt the towns, taken all the inhabitants captive to his own country, slaughtered the warriors, beheaded some chieftains and impaled or flayed others, and had confined King Lailie himself in a cage.

As he lay on his bed one night, King Esarhaddon was thinking how he should execute Lailie, when suddenly he heard a rustling near his bed, and opening his eyes saw an old man with a long grey beard and mild eyes.

“You wish to execute Lailie?” asked the old man.

“Yes,” answered the King. “But I cannot make up my mind how to do it.”

“But you are Lailie,” said the old man.

“That’s not true,” replied the King. “Lailie is Lailie, and I am I.”

“You and Lailie are one,” said the old man. “You only imagine you are not Lailie, and that Lailie is not you.”

“What do you mean by that?” said the King. “Here am I, lying on a soft bed; around me are obedient

Page 25: Martial science magazine feb 2016

FEBRUARY/2016 25

men-slaves and women-slaves, and to-morrow I shall feast with my friends as I did to-day; whereas Lailie is sitting like a bird in a cage, and to-morrow he will be impaled, and with his tongue hanging out will struggle till he dies, and his body will be torn in pieces by dogs.”

“You cannot destroy his life,” said the old man.

“And how about the fourteen thousand warriors I killed, with whose bodies I built a mound?” said the King. “I am alive, but they no longer exist. Does not that prove that I can destroy life?”

“How do you know they no longer exist?”

“Because I no longer see them. And, above all, they were tormented, but I was not. It was ill for them, but well for me.”

“That, also, only seems so to you. You tortured yourself, but not them.”

“I do not understand,” said the King.

“Do you wish to understand?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then come here,” said the old man, pointing to a large font full of water.

The King rose and approached the font.

“Strip, and enter the font.”

Esarhaddon did as the old man bade him.

“As soon as I begin to pour this water over you,” said the old man, filling a pitcher with the water, “dip down your head.”

The old man tilted the pitcher over the King’s head and the King bent his head till it was under water.

And as soon as King Esarhaddon was under the water he felt that he was no longer Esarhaddon,

but some one else. And, feeling himself to be that other man, he saw himself lying on a rich bed, beside a beautiful woman. He had never seen her before, but he knew she was his wife. The woman raised herself and said to him:

“Dear husband, Lailie! You were wearied by yesterday’s work and have slept longer than usual, and I have guarded your rest, and have not roused you. But now the Princes await you in the Great Hall. Dress and go out to them.”

And Esarhaddon -- understanding from these words that he was Lailie, and not feeling at all surprised at this, but only wondering that he did not know it before -- rose, dressed, and went into the Great Hall where the Princes awaited him.

The Princes greeted Lailie, their King, bowing to the ground, and then they rose, and at his word sat down before him; and the eldest of the Princes began to speak, saying that it was impossible longer to endure the insults of the wicked King Esarhaddon, and that they must make war on him. But Lailie disagreed, and gave orders that envoys shall be sent to remonstrate with King Esarhaddon; and he dismissed the Princes from the audience. Afterwards he appointed men of note to act as ambassadors, and impressed on them what they were to say to King Esarhaddon. Having finished this business, Esarhaddon -- feeling himself to be Lailie -- rode out to hunt wild asses. The hunt was successful. He killed two wild asses himself, and having returned home, feasted with his friends, and witnessed a dance of slave girls. The next day he went to the Court, where he was awaited by petitioners suitors, and prisoners brought for trial; and there as usual he decided the cases submitted to him. Having finished this business, he again rode out to his favourite amusement: the hunt. And again he was successful: this time killing with his own hand an old lioness, and capturing her two cubs. After the hunt he again feasted with his friends, and was entertained with music and dances, and the night he spent with the wife whom he loved.

Page 26: Martial science magazine feb 2016

26

So, dividing his time between kingly duties and pleasures, he lived for days and weeks, awaiting the return of the ambassadors he had sent to that King Esarhaddon who used to be himself. Not till a month had passed did the ambassadors return, and they returned with their noses and ears cut off.

King Esarhaddon had ordered them to tell Lailie that what had been done to them -- the ambassadors -- would be done to King Lailie himself also, unless he sent immediately a tribute of silver, gold, and cypress-wood, and came himself to pay homage to King Esarhaddon.

Lailie, formerly Esarhaddon, again assembled the Princes, and took counsel with them as to what he should do. They all with one accord said that war must be made against Esarhaddon, without waiting for him to attack them. The King agreed; and taking his place at the head of the army, started on the campaign. The campaign lasts seven days. Each day the King rode round the army to rouse the courage of his warriors. On the eighth day his army met that of Esarhaddon in a broad valley through which a river flowed. Lailie’s army fought bravely, but Lailie, formerly Esarhaddon, saw the enemy swarming down from the mountains like ants, over-running the valley and overwhelming his army; and, in his chariot, he flung himself into the midst of the battle, hewing and felling the enemy. But the warriors of Lailie were but as hundreds, while those of Esarhaddon were as thousands; and Lailie felt himself wounded and taken prisoner. Nine days he journeyed with other captives, bound, and guarded by the warriors of Esarhaddon. On the tenth day he reached Nineveh, and was placed in a cage. Lailie suffered not so much from hunger and from his wound as from shame and impotent rage. He felt how powerless he was to avenge himself on his enemy for all he was suffering. All he could do was to deprive his enemies of the pleasure of seeing his sufferings; and he firmly resolved to endure courageously without a murmur, all they could do to him. For twenty days he sat in his cage, awaiting execution. He saw his relatives and friends led out to death;

he heard the groans of those who were executed: some had their hands and feet cut off, others were flayed alive, but he showed neither disquietude, nor pity, nor fear. He saw the wife he loved, bound, and led by two black eunuchs. He knew she was being taken as a slave to Esarhaddon. That, too, he bore without a murmur. But one of the guards placed to watch him said, “I pity you, Lailie; you were a king, but what are you now?” And hearing these words, Lailie remembered all he had lost. He clutched the bars of his cage, and, wishing to kill himself, beat his head against them. But he had not the strength to do so and, groaning in despair, he fell upon the floor of his cage.

At last two executioners opened his cage door, and having strapped his arms tight behind him, led him to the place of execution, which was soaked with blood. Lailie saw a sharp stake dripping with blood, from which the corpse of one of his friends had just been torn, and he understood that this had been done that the stake might serve for his own execution. They stripped Lailie of his clothes. He was startled at the leanness of his once strong, handsome body. The two executioners seized that body by its lean thighs; they lifted him up and were about to let him fall upon the stake.

“This is death, destruction!” thought Lailie, and, forgetful of his resolve to remain bravely calm to the end, he sobbed and prayed for mercy. But no one listened to him.

“But this cannot be,” thought he. “Surely I am asleep. It is a dream.” And he made an effort to rouse himself, and did indeed awake, to find himself neither Esarhaddon nor Lailie -- but some kind of an animal. He was astonished that he was an animal, and astonished, also, at not having known this before.

He was grazing in a valley, tearing the tender grass with his teeth, and brushing away flies with his long tail. Around him was frolicking a long-legged, dark-gray ass-colt, striped down its back. Kicking up its hind legs, the colt galloped full speed to Esarhaddon, and poking him under the

Page 27: Martial science magazine feb 2016

stomach with its smooth little muzzle, searched for the teat, and, finding it, quieted down, swallowing regularly. Esarhaddon understood that he was a she-ass, the colt’s mother, and this neither surprised nor grieved him, but rather gave him pleasure. He experienced a glad feeling of simultaneous life in himself and in his offspring.

But suddenly something flew near with a whistling sound and hit him in the side, and with its sharp point entered his skin and flesh. Feeling a burning pain, Esarhaddon -- who was at the same time the ass -- tore the udder from the colt’s teeth, and laying back his ears galloped to the herd from which he had strayed. The colt kept up with him, galloping by his side. They had already nearly reached the herd, which had started off, when another arrow in full flight struck the colt’s neck. It pierced the skin and quivered in its flesh. The colt sobbed piteously and fell upon its knees. Esarhaddon could not abandon it, and remained standing over it. The colt rose, tottered on its long, thin legs, and again fell. A fearful two-legged being -- a man -- ran up and cut its throat.

“This cannot be; it is still a dream! thought Esarhaddon, and made a last effort to awake. “Surely I am not Lailie, nor the ass, but Esarhaddon!”

He cried out, and at the same instant lifted his head out of the font. . . . The old man was standing by him, pouring over his head the last drops from the pitcher.

“Oh, how terribly I have suffered! And for how long!” said Esarhaddon.

“Long?” replied the old man, “you have only dipped your head under water and lifted it again; see, the water is not yet all out of the pitcher. Do you now understand?”

Esarhaddon did not reply, but only looked at the old man with terror.

“Do you now understand,” continued the old

man, “that Lailie is you, and the warriors you put to death were you also? And not the warriors only, but the animals which you slew when hunting and ate at your feasts were also you. You thought life dwelt in you alone but I have drawn aside the veil of delusion, and have let you see that by doing evil to others you have done it to yourself also. Life is one in them all, and yours is but a portion of this same common life. And only in that one part of life that is yours, can you make life better or worse -- increasing or decreasing it. You can only improve life in yourself by destroying the barriers that divide your life from that of others, and by considering others as yourself, and loving them. By so doing you increase your share of life. You injure your life when you think of it as the only life, and try to add to its welfare at the expense of other lives. By so doing you only lessen it. To destroy the life that dwells in others is beyond your power. The life of those you have slain has vanished from your eyes, but is not destroyed. You thought to lengthen your own life and to shorten theirs, but you cannot do this. Life knows neither time nor space. The life of a moment, and the life of a thousand years: your life and the life of all the visible and invisible beings in the world, are equal. To destroy life, or to alter it, is impossible; for life is the one thing that exists. All else, but seems to us to be.”

Having said this the old man vanished.

Next morning King Esarhaddon gave orders that Lailie and all the prisoners should be set at liberty and that the executions should cease.

On the third day he called his son Assur-bani-pal, and gave the kingdom over into his hands; and he himself went into the desert to think over all he had learnt. Afterwards he went about as a wanderer through the towns and villages, preaching to the people that all life is one, and that when men wish to harm others, they really do evil to themselves.

Nak Muay Thai

Ip Man Wing Chun

GRANDMASTER MASTER (AJARN) SAMUEL KWOK AIRR PHANTHIP

&Wing Chun master, Samuel Kwok, and Thai boxing master, Airr Phantrip, first met in 2013 at a event for the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. They spoke briefly but didn’t rea-lly have the chance to talk shop until they were both on the set for the filming of The Chemist in California in 2014. Master Airr had had some exposure to Wing Chun when he was youn-ger and had enjoyed his experience with the art. This opened the door to a much broader conversation. Both men enjoyed each other’s company and, more importantly, felt that they had many things to discuss and to exchange when it came to martial arts.

Their dialogue began in earnest when Master Kwok agreed to meet Master Airr in Las Vegas at his Nak Muay Thai gym in October of 2014.

It was my privilege to be there and see the exchange firsthand alongside Sensei Henry Binerfa of Martial Science Magazine. Natura-lly, the conversation gravitated to those things that Muay Thai and Wing Chun had in com-mon; the use of elbows, leg jamming and the lower kicks designed to destroy an opponent’s foundation. It was fascinating to see one of the men show a technique from his own art and see the other give his take on how his art approached the same situation.

As Master Airr and Master Kwok compared techniques the conversation quickly turned to the more sophisticated topic of angle and distance. Both Muay Thai and Wing Chun use subtle changes in angle in both defense and attack. Both men, being experienced fighters, also know that at a higher level of fighting all

openings come from the clever use of angles. Both arts have very crafty methods of going from a longer range to a closer distance from which the elbow or knees can be used. Wing Chun is known for being at it’s most effecti-ve when the practitioner is close enough to make contact with the opponent, “stick” to their techniques and make counterattacking or escaping very difficult. Simultaneous attack and defense is a core principle of Wing Chun. At close quarters, Muay Thai has its famous clinch in which the elbows and knees come into play. Muay Thai is also superb in changing the distance to its advantage, from long range to short and then exiting to a longer range to suit the fighter’s intention.

Have a look at the following fight sequences demonstrated by Master Kwok and Master Airr and enjoy the techniques that Wing Chun and Muay Thai have in common and the diffe-rent and unique ways both arts employ them. Both masters talk regularly exchanging ideas so there will be more to come.

As a senior student of Grandmaster Kwok, Master Nearing has accompanied his teacher in his travels to Hong Kong and China and had the opportunity to train with his teacher’s teachers, Ip Chun and Ip Ching. He has also traveled far and wide to train and teach Wing Chun, from England to South Africa and throughout the United States. Master Nearing has also been the recipient of many honours, among them demonstrat-ing Chi Sao with Grandmaster Kwok at the First World Ving Tsun Conference in 1999 and performing the Six and a Half Point Pole Form at the opening of The Ip Man Tong in Ip Man’s hometown of Fatsan.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO LEARN MARTIAL ARTS?

Childhood’s Dream:

I started my interest in Martial Arts since I was 6 years of age after I accidentally got into the theatre by myself and saw Master Ti Lung’s film. From that point, my life was never be the same, and my quest for an understanding of Martial Arts was an everlasting. My childhood dream was to go and live in Shaolin Temple and study Gung Fu and literature. That was all I could think of during my childhood.

I was inspired by Master Ti Lung and later by Mas-ter Bruce Lee, so Wing Chun Gung Fu was always my goal. But there was not any Wing Chun Gung Fu school around where I lived. So I started to study American Kenpo Karate and Kickboxing with Sensei Paul Hock’s school, which very clo-sed to my house. And later I met Sensei Thomas Martin, and I asked a permission from Sensei Paul Hock to study under Sensei Thomas Martin. And of course, Sensei Paul Hock granted my wish be-cause Sensei Thomas Martin was also an Instruc-tor at his school too. Afterward, my journey was not ended; I continue to take Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and other martial arts styles. But my heart was always for Wing Chun Gung Fu. So one day, I accidentally found out from my Gung Fu brother that he found a Wing Chun School in OC County, and I told him that I was interested to check out and enroll it. Because Wing Chun schools were not many and my dream finally came true. So I signed up and studied Wing Chun Gung Fu since then until now.

I’ve been doing Martial Arts most of my life, and I got to the point that it was more internal unders-tanding when I am more mature. So my Sifu told me that I was ready to pass on the art. So I was granted to be a Sifu level. But I am still constantly learning all the time.

And then I had to come up with the school name, so I was thinking that when I was a child I always

wanted to go to Shaolin Temple to study martial arts and literature. And then a vision came to my mind, Temple and later Wing Chun.

So I came up with Wing Chun Temple, and my Sifu was impressed.

So I made up my mind about WING CHUN TEM-PLE School’s Mission and Vision:

WING CHUN TEMPLE is not just another martial arts school, nor just another Wing Chun Kwoon; it’s an ALL inclusive Martial Arts School by com-bing the old way of learning into the modern world that we’re living in. When one learns at WING CHUN TEMPLE, she or he will be a well-rounded martial artist by receiving martial arts skills and also martial arts academics as well such as lear-ning Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism with other Eastern and Western philosophy studies.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE TRAINING WING CHUN?

The Search for Wing Chun Kwoon:

Wing Chun Gung Fu was always my desire to learn it while I was learning some other martial arts due to Wing Chun was not available at the time. Un-til later in 1993 when I found the Kwoon with my good friend of mine in Fountain Valley, California.

1st Wing Chun Sifu - Grandmaster Don Fling un-der Chanh Wah Shun Lineage:My first Wing Chun Sifu was very strict of accep-ting any student; he only wanted 8 students and it was very private. The Kwoon was at home in his garage with plenty of Wing Chun equipments. My Sifu’s Kwoon was operated with an Old School and very traditional settings. For example, we had to bow when entering and exiting the Kwoon and all time we were taught to be humble, polite, respect-ful and carried ourselves as a modest and gentle-men like attitude; otherwise, my Sifu would ask us to leave his Kwoon or he would kick any student out if not followed by his rules. My Sifu was the only one that had a Kwoon, which he was the only Chanh Wah Shun Wing Chun lineage from his Sifu.

2nd Wing Chun Sifu - Grandmaster Jerry McKin-ley under Ip Man Lineage:

After multiple family issues of my first Wing Chun Sifu, he decided to close his Kwoon temporary due to he had to attend to his problems. My yearning and desire to learn Wing Chun was unstoppable, so my buddy and I decided to join Southern Ca-lifornia Wing Chun Association under my second Sifu - Grandmaster Jerry McKinley whose Sifu was Sigung Jim Lau, under Ip Man lineage. Sifu Jerry McKinley was very well known and well res-pected among Wing Chun communities and he was the one that trained an actor Nicolas Cage. But sadly he passed away unexpectedly on August 15, 2002 due to heart attack. Sifu Jerry McKinley may be gone physically but his spirit and legacy will live forever…

3rd Wing Chun Sifu - Grandmaster Franco Lung:Grandmaster Franco Lung migrated from Hong Kong to America in 2008; he was the student of Grandmaster Wong Shun Leung. After settling down in Los Angeles area, he started his Wing Chun School called, Lung Wing Chun. Every Wing Chun practitioner cant’ master everything within Wing Chun System because Wing Chun system is so big and endless due to it’s a Concept and Princi-ple Martial Arts. Therefore, everyone has a strong part in the system, and Grandmaster Franco Lung has his strong part, which is the Wing Chun Dra-gon Pole. Grandmaster Franco Lung has earned his nickname as “The King of The Dragon Pole.”

4th Wing Chun Sifu - Grandmaster Wong Long Ching:

Sifu Grandmaster is a very special person to me; here’s our stories: As of June 17, 2014 the birth and the new begin-ning of WONG LONG WING CHUN was named and formed with WING CHUN TEMPLE as of preserving the legacy of Grandmaster Wong Long Ching.

Grandmaster Wong Long Ching is the 1st genera-tion of the late Great Grandmaster Ip Man, who was the teacher of Bruce Lee. Grandmaster Wong has a great respect and great admiration of his teacher, GM Ip Man, so he decided to stay close with his teacher until the end. Grandmaster Wong could be famous or well-known like many other Wing Chun practitioners of the 1st generation like Bruce Lee, Wong Shun Leung, William Cheung, Hawkins Cheung, Victor Khan, and etc… Howe-ver, Grandmaster Wong decided to stay away from the spotlight and just wanted to live a normal life since the passing of his teacher, GM Ip Man.

Until recently, Grandmaster Wong decided to ac-cept his new and last disciple from the West, Sifu Clark Tang to carry on his legacy and his Wing Chun Gung Fu. Sifu Clark Tang founded WING CHUN TEMPLE since 2012 and started teaching Wing Chun Gung Fu without under any linea-

Page 45: Martial science magazine feb 2016

ge due to many sifus and his martial arts background. Grandmaster Wong loved the name, WING CHUN TEMPLE and Sifu Clark Tang was always loved and inspired by Grandmaster Wong’s Wing Chun skills, but above all, Sifu Clark Tang was touched by Grandmas-ter Wong’s personality and Grandmaster Wong’s way of life. Sifu Clark Tang has been telling everyone about Grandmaster Wong in the Wing Chun Communities, sa-ying that,” Grandmaster Wong is not only practice Wing Chun Gung Fu, but Grandmaster Wong lives the art of Wing Chun.” On Grandmaster Wong’s birthday, WING CHUN TEMPLE school name was gifted to Grandmas-ter Wong by Sifu Clark Tang, and in return Grandmaster Wong granted Sifu Clark to form WING CHUN TEM-PLE WONG LONG WING CHUN to preserve his legacy as Sifu Clark’s greatest wish. Therefore, WONG LONG WING CHUN was entered into the Martial Arts world and many more years to come…

SPEAKING OF MENTORS, WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES IN MARTIAL ARTS?

The most influential people are as follow: First of all, My Sifu, Grand Master Wong Long Ching, Se-cond is Master Bruce Lee, and last but not least, Master Ti Lung.

My Sifu, Grand Master Wong Long Ching is the student of Grand Master Ip Man, and he is the older brother of Bruce Lee. My Sifu has not only practice Wing Chun most of his life, but he also li-ves the art. Practicing is one thing but letting Wing Chun live in you is not easy, you need to be simple and sacrifice a lot of things are necessary. To me, that is the truth of Gung Fu : To be Nothing. That’s the ultimate goal of any true master. Out of all, my Sifu Grand Master Wong Long Ching is the true master of Gung Fu.

WHY THE CENTER LINE IS IMPORTANT IN WING CHUN?

The Centerline Theory in Wing Chun system:

When it comes to Wing Chun system, Centerline is everything!

Another words, no centerline, there’s no Wing Chun system - In Wing Chun, we start with the Centerli-ne and end with the Centerline. Wing Chun Cen-terline is the reference point of everything in the system; it’s like a “Home Screen” on the iPhone :-)Even Master Bruce Lee said it, “If you control the centerline, you control the fight.” Master Bruce Lee’s saying is so true; however, one MUST study and mediate long enough to get to understand to this point. Otherwise, it’s very hard to grasp the art of Wing Chun because Wing Chun is unlike any other martial arts.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MARTIAL ARTS AND ITS SPIRITUAL TEACHINGS?

Wing Chun seems to be the simplest yet very deep and it’s not an easy to grasp nor easily understand unless one has the right mind, heart and spirit. For these reasons and many of years of studying, practicing and sharing the art of Wing Chun, I can conclude it that Wing Chun is, indeed, a Spiritual Martial Arts due to three main characteristics of the art:

Page 47: Martial science magazine feb 2016

FEBRUARY/2016 47

1. Instead of using Strength and Power, Wing Chun uses Soft and Relaxation to over power the opponent. Another words, instead of using hatred toward others, Wing Chun will show Love, Patience and Grace toward others. Wing Chun is almost like Christ like Ideology and Teaching…

2. As you can observe, most people believe they are doing Wing Chun, but actually they will never understand the Core and the Power of Wing Chun unless they get into their spiritual realm. For this, practitioners must have Patience and Faith of themselves and the system. This is the hardest part of becoming a Wing Chun practitioners; however, if one doesn’t give up and stay long enough, the art will appear when the time is right. And once you reach that, the whole new world will be upon you like nothing before. It’s almost when the Holy Spirit comes to you and you can see endless possi-bilities…

3. Wing Chun is a very Personal Martial Arts, whereas other martial arts may just copy al-most exactly what she or he was taught, but not Wing Chun. Wing Chun may have the same foun-dation, fundamental, concepts and principles; however, each and every practitioner is different on how she or he sees it, especially Chi Sao. Chi Sao exercise is like a fingerprint, which everyone has a mark. This is why Wing Chun is so much po-litics and disagreements among practitioners and some organizations; however, the “ART” always wins. The ART always wins because the ART is pure and Universal energy which based purely on science or the Universal Way (TAO). For example, we can say that if anyone throws the apple to the air, the apple surely will fall back to the ground, and we can prove it every single time. Therefo-re, the art of Wing Chun is belong to the Universe or GOD, HIMSELF. Any way I can go on and on about this but we’ll save it for another time.

In term of Martial Arts and its Spiritual Teachings or Aspects, I can say, most and it should be ALL, first it starts with Physical, then The Mind(I call it, Wisdom), and Spirituality. These are the process everyone should be aware of, not just physical de-

Page 48: Martial science magazine feb 2016

48

Page 49: Martial science magazine feb 2016

fense, but more important, the defense of your own Mind and/or your own Spirituality are far more dangerous than Physical defense.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE PRACTICE OF WING CHUN?

When practicing the art of Wing Chun with all of one’s mind, heart and soul, the benefits are endless with great possibilities one can achieve in life.

One oblivious good example is Master Bruce Lee. Because Master Bruce Lee learned and exposed to great Wisdom of Wing Chun, he turned out to be the most amazing martial artist during his time and his legacy still lives until today, and I truly believe that his legacy will be with us for a very long time.

For me, I truly believe that Wing Chun Kung Fu has everything that one’s needs; all we have to do is took for it hard enough and then the art will re-veal itself to us. From there, there are no limits and the possibilities are endless.
