This gay and sparkling symphony stands betwixt the heroic epic heights of the third, and the overpowering grandeurs of the fifth, like a happy peaceful vale 'twixt towering Alps and profound Ocean. Saving the fine touch of mystery in the Introduction, the passionate romanticism of the Adagio, and the graceful tenderness of the Trio, all its moods are instinct with gaiety, buoyant hap-piness, and quaint humour. Imposing as Beethoven ever is in his tragic depiction of life, no poet can be said to excel him in that naïve idyllic comedy of which we have here a sparkling example. And looking upon the world in this genial and cheerful aspect, how many subtle shades of characterisation are we led to admire. There is a freshness and spontaneity in his way of viewing things, combined with a poetic fervour and tendency to beautify whatever is touched upon, which carries one back to Chaucer—

For hit was, on to beholde As though the erthe envye wolde To be gayer than the heven, To have no floures, swiche seven As in the welken sterres be. Hit had forgete the povertee That winter, through his colde morwes, Had mad hit suffren, and his sorwes ; Al was forgeten, and that was sene. 5. Zone 1poem " Don Juan" ... R. Strauss.

Don Juan was written in 1888,—the composer then being 24 years of age,—one year before the Tod und Verklarung. The following is a list of the principal works he has written up to 1901 :—Symphony in F Minor, Aus Italien, Macbeth, Don Juan, Tod und Verklarung, Guntram, Till Eulenspiegel, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Quixote, Ein Heldenleben, Feuersnot. Since then, the Sym-phonia Domestica has been produced. Of these works, we have had an oppor-tunity of hearing in Melbourne the Tod und Verklarung and we now are to hear Don Juan, a work quite opposite in its tendencies and character. Its vivacious character will be at once apparent to the listener. The work needs no elaborate analysis or indications of the various episodes in the Poem. The love themes intro-duced are subjected to most refined treatment. The final climax is variously interpreted, and in the opinion of more than one commentator represents the death struggle of Don Juan, which apparently takes place in the drama of Lenau as the result of a duel with an adversary. As Strauss himself has attached to the score of the poem some verses of Lenau, dealing with the subject, the interpreta-tion is probably correct.

Town Hall, Melbourne, On the Afternoon of

SATURDAY, SEPT. 7th, at 3 p.m. (This day Fortnight).

The Management are utilising the engagement of the very large Orchestra necessary for the production of the excerpts from Romeo and Juliet to repeat the performance of the Prelude to Parsifal and the extract from Tristan and Isolde. The difficulties and expense in organising such an Orchestra render productions of this nature only possible on comparatively rare occasions. At this Concert a Plebiscite will be taken for the guidance of the Managers in constructing future programmes.
