  • It is with gratitude and humility that Saskatoon Summer Players acknowledges that we create and perform on Treaty Six Territory which is the traditional

territory of many First Nations and is the homeland of the Metis.

Please be aware that flashing lights (a.k.a. strobe lights) are featured in this production.

The video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited.

This production would not have been possible without the generous support of our community partners. They have helped us when we needed access to space, equipment, and expertise. We are eternally grateful for their generosity and for

their commitment to making theatre happen in our community at this difficult time.

In particularly difficult times such as these, we are thankful for the support of the businesses and granting organizations who stand with arts organizations

like Saskatoon Summer Players to ensure that the show goes on. We offer our sincere thanks to these organizations.

  • MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR On this break from doing what we love, Saskatoon Summer Players remembers two people, a donor and a volunteer, who are with us in spirit as we resume: Sue Brooks and Bob Steane. Bob was an unfailing supporter of our shows, and he left us a legacy that will support SSP productions for years to come. Sue was an unflagging volunteer through much of our 55-year history. Her board work, fundraising, strategic planning, acting, sewing, organizing and whatever-needs-doing attitude were a

light for generations of SSP volunteers. Because the cast and crew of The Addams Family have the same spirit and generosity, we know that Bob and Sue would be just as proud of this show as we are. Thank you both, and thanks to all our current volunteers, staff and supporters. Without your determination and creativity in these difficult times, we couldn’t be saying, “On with the show.”

    ROD MACPHERSON, Board Chair

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORDa da da da *snap* *snap*! The Addams Family theme is so iconic that multiple generations of TV-watchers, movie-goers, and musical theatre fans know their cue to snap along every time that tune is played. So what is it about the Addams Family that has enamoured audiences to these creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky characters for so many years? I believe it is in their unique ability to remind us that there is light, laughter, and love in even the darkest of circumstances. This is a message that resonates with audiences as much today as it did in 1964 when the original television show debuted. This musical adaptation of The Addams Family explores love and family in new ways—from Wednesday falling in love with a boy who comes from a family very unlike her own, to Fester, a self-described, “fat bald person of no specific sexuality” falling

in love with the moon. We are reminded that family is what you define it as, and at the end of the day love is love is love is love is love… In this challenging time in our world, where so many of us have been isolated from people and activities we care about, and where thousands have faced incredible sadness and loss, I am beyond grateful to the countless individuals who have worked to safely bring this show to the stage, and to screens around the world. Thank you to our diverse cast, production team, orchestra, and to our audience. I hope that this show brings a little bit of light and laughter into whatever darkness you might be facing in your world.

With love and respect, LAURA NEGRAEFF, Director

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC PRODUCER Welcome to The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy!

True, this is not what we originally envisioned when we programmed this show… I don’t think we even would have thought staging a show in this way was possible, but here we are! Saskatoon Summer Players is nothing if not resourceful (after all we’ve been turning cardboard boxes into castles for 56 years) and we are pleased to share this unique COVID-19 theatre experience with you, our treasured patrons.

Director Laura Negraeff and her team are about to whisk you away to not only the theatre, but to the home of one of the most beloved and mysteriously ookey families of all time. The careful thought and dedication that has been put into every step of bringing this show to life is a true testament to the creativity that lives within our volunteer theatre artists. The folx working on this show have been pouring over the script, score, and designs for months

to make sure that we create a magical and safe theatre experience. I am so thankful for all that they have given to this show and to this organization.

Saskatoon Summer Players strives to create and enrich community through the magic of volunteer-based musical theatre and I am exceptionally fortunate to be a part of this company. A company that is strong enough to meet the COVID-19 pandemic, a company that has such deep connections to the community, a company that is committed to building connections to the people here, and a company that has the vision to see what so many others can’t.

When we are able to gather in theatres again, we hope that you will join us. But for now, enjoy this truly unique Saskatoon Summer Players experience.

    Sincerely, ANITA SMITH, Artistic Producer

RICARDO ALVARADO (Uncle Fester) enjoys singing in the shower, dancing in the rain, and howling at the moon... So, Fester seemed a natural fit! He is a proud member of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, co-founder of ‘Ppl r Ppl Productions’, and has a long loving history

with SSP. Favourite SSP memories include: CINDERELLA (Ugly Stepsister), RENT (Angel), and directing ANNIE, CABARET, and I LOVE YOU BECAUSE. four years as part of teacher Matt Burgess’s drama program (backstage crew/lighting & sound) and was recognized with the Outstanding Techie Award in his graduating year. Duncan has been a lifelong fan of SSP shows, and he’s happy to help make the magic happen as part of the team this year.

CAMERON BREITER (Bass) Saskatchewan born double bassist, Cameron Breiter began his musical journey at a young age, with it starting in the school music room. Cameron’s first instrument was the bass guitar and wasn’t until the eleventh grade that he started to play the double bass.

Cameron currently attends the University of Saskatchewan studying music education, in which he hopes to teach high school music classes. This is Cameron’s first time performing with the SSP and hopes to be a part of future productions shlapin’ da bass!

MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book), born in Brazil of American parents, attended New York public schools and the University of Wisconsin, where he received a double baccalaureate in both science and music.

He entered show business first as a member of the folk group The Tarriers and then, along with John and Michelle Phillips, as one of The New Journeymen, a precursor of The Mamas and the Papas, whose flamboyant life-style and eccentric harmonies defined the post-folk era of tuning up, turning on and cashing in.

Trading in his Gibson Mastertone 5-string banjo for an IBM Selectric, he secured a position as writer/director on Candid Camera, America’s original reality show, a wildly successful early experiment in monetizing public humiliation, for which he hereby apologizes.

Fleeing Candid Camera, Brickman found solace as head writer for Johnny Carson, whose late-night show on NBC emanated from ironically named Radio City in midtown Manhattan, a stroke of luck that allowed him to stay as far from Los Angles as possible while still retaining U.S. citizenship. In 1970 he left NBC to become producer/head writer of Dick Cavett’s late-night show on ABC. Among the many ground-breaking events that Cavett introduced into the late-night formula was the night presidential hopeful George McGovern was interviewed by last-minute guest host Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics. The result was fascinating, not unlike watching a python ingesting a small cow.

In the meantime he had started a collaboration with Woody Allen, a young comic who opened for the Tarriers at Fred Weintraub’s Bitter End, the legendary Bleeker Street coffee house that provided exposure to upcoming talent in music and comedy. They worked at odd hours on screenplays and material for Allen’s early TV appearances, an experience like no other. Brickman watched Mr. Allen negotiate both the creative and practical issues confronting an artist working in a commercial environment; he learned things that can’t be taught and never laughed as hard as the time spent

    7

  • roaming the city with a certified genius discussing art, politics, women, the state of the business, and why Durwood Kirby was considered funny, even by people with college degrees.

Mr. Brickman’s film work as author (or co-author with Woody Allen) includes Sleeper, Annie Hall (Academy Award), Manhattan, (AA nomination) and Manhattan Murder Mystery. As film writer/director): Simon, Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, Sister Mary Explains it All. In television: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (head writer, 1967-’70); The Dick Cavett Show (head writer/co-producer, 1970-’72).

Brickman’s recording (with ex-Tarrier Eric Weissberg) of the soundtrack of Deliverance, released in 1970, contained the surprise hit “Dueling Banjos,” achieved platinum status, and remains a healthy seller over 40 years later.

His first foray into musical theater resulted in Jersey Boys, which won the Tony, Olivier, Helpmann, Grammy and many other awards worldwide, is in its twelfth year on Broadway, has been seen by twenty million people worldwide and is currently the 10th-longest running show in the history of Broadway. The film version of the show was directed by Clint Eastwood.

Mr. Brickman’s other theatrical efforts include Turn of the Century, which played to capacity houses in Chicago, and The Addams Family, starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, which ran for two years on Broadway and to date has had over four thousand first and second tier productions internationally.

In addition to his work in film and theater, Mr. Brickman has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals. He is the 2006 recipient of the Writers’ Guild of America Ian McClellan Hunter Award for Lifetime Achievement.

His current project is a stage musical celebrating the life of western star Roy Rogers, scheduled to premiere late in 2017.

After over 40 years in the business, trying to balance talent with opportunity and watching the careers of colleagues, both successful and less so, he can reduce what he’s learned into one succinct bit of wisdom: above all, it’s important to be lucky.

SHAUN BZDEL (Co-Music Director) Shaun is excited to be working with SSP on The Addams Family. Recent selected Music Director credits include: Into the Woods (SSP), Annie (SSP), Little Women (SSP), Les Miserables (STJ theatre), Jesus Christ Superstar (STJ theatre), The Rocky Horror

SARAH DOHERTY (Set Designer/Head of Scenic Painting) has an 18-year career as a professional freelance and exhibiting Artist behind her, her most recent ventures including the last five years exhibiting and selling in NYC and beginning a role as a comic series creator. She has always held a

ELLEN GAUNT Ellen Gaunt (1924-2020) was a founding member of Saskatoon Summer Players and spent many hours creating costumes and hairstyles for SSP productions. Ellen received many awards in her lifetime for her contributions to the community including: the SABEX Business Hall of Fame Award (2015), the YWCA Woman of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award (1999), and in 2014 she was named a Lifetime Member of SSP in recognition of her significant contributions to the organization. Ellen was a wise woman, a mentor and a role model. We thank her for her many years of contributing to our organization.

RANDI NELSON Randi Marcel Nelson (1954-2020) performed in the Saskatoon Summer Players orchestra as a flutist on numerous occasions. From an early age Randi’s musical gifts were evident. Having first performed with the Saskatoon Symphony at the age of 14, she enjoyed a long and fulfilling association of over forty years with the orchestra as principal flute and artist in residence. She served as flute instructor at the University of Saskatchewan for more than thirty years. Her sound was unique and captivating. She was adored by her students, held in high esteem by her colleagues and friends, and indeed by everyone whose life she touched. Many hearts are shattered by the news of her passing, but the memory of her honesty, integrity, and engaging smile will light our path forward.

DIANE OKRAINETZ Diane’s introduction to the Saskatoon Summer Players stage was in The Boyfriend in 1985. She would go on to perform in many other SSP productions over the following years. One of her favorite roles was in the production of Damn Yankees where she played Gloria Thorpe and was honored to be onstage with the likes of Wendell Owen, Judy Postle, Bud Stilling, Lila Henderson, and many other talented local performers. Close friendships with many who had the same passions were numerous. Individuals like Bob Hinitt, Lusia Pavlychenko, Pat Heighes, Kathy Bond, and others inspired her through the years.

Diane taught in elementary schools for 30 years, and being an educator, mentoring was important to her. She shared her love of the performing arts alongside Diane Murray-Charrett

through Saskatoon Youth Music Theatre (SYMT) and through her own programs Music N Motion and Music N More. Her passion and devotion to the arts has enriched the lives of countless individuals over the last three decades.

Diane strongly believed that the ability to sing, act, and dance is in all of us and that children should be given the opportunity to develop these and other art forms. Diane will be greatly missed by the arts community and all that had the privilege to know her.

TARA OLIVER (Outgoing Operations Manager) has been an important part of Saskatoon Summer Players since 2014 when she worked on her first SSP production (Shrek The Musical). She joined us as a volunteer make-up artist and when the opportunity arose in 2017 for her to transition to a member of the SSP staff, she seized the moment transitioning from volunteer to Volunteer Coordinator to Operations Manager of SSP. Even though Tara’s time as an SSP employee has come to an end as she pursues new career opportunities, she will always be a valued part of the SSP family. We wish her all the best on this next leg of her journey, and we thank her for her varied contributions to our community. Tara helped make magic happen here.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO A MEMBER OF THE SSP FAMILY
