MARS MANAGEMENT OF
AQUIFER RECHARGE AND STORAGE Project PvW 12025/2012
MARS
Ideas- Partnerships-Projects
1. Water scarcity in Moldovei Highland
(Regional Water Company Aquavas-Vaslui)
2. Water scarcity in S and SW of Romania (Regional Water Company Oltenia)
3. Flood protection in N of Romania (Regional Water Company Acet Suceava)
Integrated managemnt of surface water and groundwater is crucial for water supply to overcome periods of droughts or management of floods
MARS
VASLUI
Today - accumulation lake Solesti
Severe drought - risk of no water
Past - wells that used the groundwater from the alluvial deposits of the river Vaslui
CALAFAT • Calafat has a centralized water supply system, the only water supply source -> Danube
• Level fluctuations of the Danube in the area of Calafat amplitudes of 8-9 m ->large variation of the flow
• The multiannual average flow is approximate 5460 m3/s
Calafat - August 2012: Danube flow, the lowest in the last 60 years < 2000 m3/sec Source: B1.ro | 29 august 2012
Extreme low level Danube December 2011:ca 2200 m3/sec
RĂDĂUŢI
Infiltration channel & wells (Although was considered a temporary solution - the solution of artificial recharge through the channel is still in work today)
Floods damaged the wells field- quantitative & qualitative
The project (1) Field visits
Seminars and debates
The project (2)
Study trip to the Netherlands
RESULTS (1)- Vaslui
The artificial recharge of the aquifer in the area of the lake Solesti looks not feasible due the very poor development and thin layer of aquifer deposits (that will not favour water storage), the narrow valley and the direction of aquifer flow towards the river
In areas with Vaslui profile a successful approach should start from the city/locality and the identification of all potential water sources should be done by enlarging the area step by step and taking into account all possible sources. Any alternative to store water from precipitation when available is also an important choice for this area and other regions with similar profile (as for example Dobrogea plateau)
Results (2)- Calafat
Available water sources for infiltration: precipitation in the urban areas, surface waters, treated wastewater, natural lakes and accumulation lakes, medium and large deep aquifers and the Danube.
MARS technique favourable conditions
Subsurface screen to increase water storage in the ground and wells for water extraction
Results (3)- Rădăuți
The area is favourable for MARS both for water storage and flood protection
• Repositioning of the wells could increase the storage capacity • Increasing the infiltration area could protect against further floods
NEXT STEPS
Driving forces - knowledge ,
enthusiasm , solution
orientation, stakeholders
involvement at regional and
local level
Potential to elaborate projects for further investigation and
implementation of MARS concept in Romania
