    AKAD NIKAHMARRIAGE CONTRACT)

    A Malay wedding proper begins withthe akad nikah(marriage contract)

    ceremony. The groom signs the

    marriage contract and agrees to

    provide the bride with a mas

    kahwin(mahar,literally 'marriage gold'

    in form of money or goods or anything

    as requested by the bride).It is

    opposite to dowry where the mas

    khawin is paid by the bride to the

    groom.

    The mas khawinis a symbol to show

    that the men is willing and are

    prepared to build a family with the ladyhe chose to get married to. The

    contract signing is done before a

    religious official and is accompanied

    by prayer.

    The actual wedding day is theBersanding. This literally means the

    "sitting together of the bride and

    bridegroom on the bridal couch".

    The bersanding(enthronement)

    ceremony begins with the groom's

    procession with friends, relatives,musicians and people waving bunga

    manggar(palm blossom) to meet the

    bride. Often various good-humoured

    attempts are made to waylay or stop the

    groom from getting to the bride.

    The main part of the bersandinginvolves

    the seating of the bridal couple on a daisand sprinkling them with yellow rice and

    scented water by family members,

    relatives and guests as a sign of blessing.

    TABOOS IN MALAY WEDDING

    Do not go out with your couple for 40 days, before Ijab Kabul

    to avoid the imputation of society.

    Do not go out freely

    Do not eat rice with stew several months before going to bed

    to avoid a distended stomach.

    Avoid eating smelly food such as petai.

    Avoid bath at night because it is not good for the body.

    Avoid eating too much seafood as it contains many toxic.

    Practice eating chicken eggs two times a week for added

    energy.

    Get enough sleep (8hours)

    Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.

    Avoid contact with sunlight as the feared black and shining on

    the day of marriage.

    Avoid drinking cold water and soy because it is not good for

    the body. Do not do hard work.

    Do not meet up personally with other men/women.

    REFLECTION

    DALILA ABDULLAH PISMP TESL 1 IPGKBL

    Culture and learning subject gives a lot of exposure about

    races in Malaysia especially Malay.

    Increase awareness regarding the issue of racial diversity and

    knowledge about Malay customs and traditions.

    Realise that some of the culture has changed and vanished.

    Have deeper understanding about Malay wedding rituals.

    Learn to respect the differences and appreciate similarities

    between the different ethnicity.
