TRINITY SUNDAY 2017

This feast of the Trinity is a celebration of God’s love for each person. The first reading tells of the steadfast love and tenderness God has for the people of Israel. In the Gospel, God as Father extends this covenant to all people who believe. The image which shows this love in its fullness is Jesus washing his disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. Flesh touches flesh, a gesture which prefigures the emptying of Jesus in love for others, as he accepts death on the cross.

Faith overcomes doubt and is the gift which enables us to persevere, even in times of difficulty. The Trinity reveals a God who exists in relationships of love. God the Spirit helps us to love others more deeply. When the faces of others call out, whether at home or from the television, each one asks, “Where are you?” Our connection with other people calls for a deepening of solidarity, an increase in support, care and love. Love of neighbor and love of God are united in all our daily ordinary acts of love.

Each person has a favorite image of God. In the past, it was often the statue of the Sacred Heart, which consoled people and reminded them of God’s love and compassion. Often at a funeral, the image is that of Christ the Good Shepherd. Different images help people to understand God at different times. Christian faith is a journey on which we are often called to let go of inadequate images of God and discover new ones. Which images of God are my favorites and why? Maybe there are some that I do not like. Again, why is that? Clement of Alexandria, who lived in the third century AD, spoke of God as Father and

Mother – Father as Creator and Mother as Compassion. Do feminine images of God help me understand the depth of God’s love for me?

The mystery of God and the mystery of the human person are bound together, since each woman and man is created in the “image and likeness of God.” If it is difficult to understand God, it is equally difficult to understand another person. If a human being is such a mystery, then to grow in accepting others is a great task. Do I cling to stereotyped images of others, which block me from seeing their goodness? Does my self-image prevent God deepening my faith? How might the face of another person be calling me to love?

Blessings in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

Fr. Bob Pastor

Learning through Sorting

Young children learn best by experimenting with their environment through hands-on activities and play, which is why learning centers are such a vital part of our preschool program. Recently we had a center focused on sorting. The students had fun developing their fine motor skills and decision making while being social with their classmates.

Principal for a Day

Sixth grader GraceAnne Pullapully had an extra special day at St. Cletus recently when she got to be Principal for the Day. She read the morning announcements, made classroom visits, and granted a school wide dress down day. A highlight of the day was reading Elephant and Piggie to the preschoolers.

Once a Cardinal! Always a Cardinal!

With the end of the school year we said goodbye to the St. Cletus class of 2017. Congratulations to all these young men and women as they move on to their next adventure in high school. You have worked hard to build a strong foundation in both academics and faith and you are ready for this big step.

We still have space for more golfers. Email [email protected] today!

Sunday Notes - The Most Holy Trinity

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY

The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Tuesday: St. Anthony of Padua Wednesday: Flag Day Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.”

Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

A QUESTION OF FAITH

It is never a question with any of us of faith or no faith; the question always is, “In what or in whom do I put my faith?”

According to statistics generated by the Greater Chicago Food Depository, 47% of households they serve in Cook County say they have to choose between paying for food and utilities. 44% report choosing between paying for food and rent or mortgage. Some of those people reside right here in our area.

St. Cletus' own Colleen and Jim Hagen will provide an energetic presentation on their hobby of beekeeping. All the above will be intertwined with stories of their successes and failures and Jim will specifically explain what it is like dealing with over 100,000 females at one time (almost 100% of bees in a hive are ladies)! It will be an interesting evening (without the bees...they're staying home) including lots of picture, tastes of the honey, a demonstration of the art of beekeeping, and even a few "door prizes" relative to the topic.

WEDDING MINISTRY

IS THE WEDDING MINISTRY CALLING YOU? All you have to say is “I do”- to accept the call and you are on your way. You would work with a partner in talking

and walking the bridal party through their rehearsal (the night before) and being present at the wedding to assist in setting up as needed. There is an easy guide to follow and you would be trained. It’s a great ministry to help ease any anxiety of the happy couple. It is not a large time commitment as weddings occur sporadically and the more ministers we have, your service can be spaced at your preference. Please think about this and give me a call (or send an e-mail) if you have any questions or would like more information. Contact Paulette Bolton at 708 215-5422 or email [email protected]

ST. CLETUS BOOK CLUB

The St. Cletus Book Club will be meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 13th. We'll meet in room 102 in the school and will discuss the popular book, "A Gentleman in Moscow". All interested participants are most welcome, so think about joining us for a fun discussion.

Last weekend you shared your support through donations, candy purchases, and prayers, and we are so grateful! Please continue to pray for the teens as they prepare for their week of service.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS WORKSHOP FRUITFUL!

This past Monday, nearly two dozen high school teens gathered for a workshop on Spiritual Giftedness. They learned about the right and duty Christians have to use their spiritual charisms, given in baptism. Through the use of a specifically designed inventory, they were able to discover what their charisms are and how they can use them as well as set up a plan to support each other in spiritual growth by sharing their gifts with the world. This workshop will be offered again on August 7th. All high school teens who have completed at least one year of high school are welcome to attend!!
