    1/1

In Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, site of one of Americas greatest military setbacks, the nuclear submarine USS

Santa Fe sat in wait. Within the tight confines of the ship toiled a crew plagued by low morale and poor

performance. In a remarkable turn of events they would soon lead the fleet in most measures of combat

effectiveness and create more future leaders than any other submarine.

This is the story of how that happened. Luckily for the Navy and the crew of the USS Santa Fe, their newcommander, David Marquet broke traditional stereotypes. Using a unique combination of irreverence,

courage, empathy and technical acumen, he crafted a new leadership model.

Where others had given up, Marquet saw the opportunity for a major turnaround. Rather than engage

in the typical top-down management approach used by the military, Marquet created a new

approach, one that empowered and engaged the crewgiving them the tools to think and act like

leaders themselves. In his new book, TURN THE SHIP AROUND! HOW TO CREATE LEADERSHIP AT

EVERY LEVEL(Greenleaf Publishing Group, August 2012, $24.95), Captain Marquet details a strategy

that will revolutionize the way successful leaders think and act for years to come.

In the tradition of Tom Clancy, TURN THE SHIP AROUND! takes the reader on board a nuclear

submarine for a detailed look at the latest in arms and warfare technology. But its not the technology

that captivates, its the human drama both within the mind of the commander and the response of the

crew as Marquet embraces a leadership approach that runs opposite to everything hes been taught.

Rather than one leader and 134 followers, Marquet created 135 leadersas each member of his crew

became a leader and assumed responsibility for everything they did, from clerical tasks to crucial

combat decisions. Santa Fe would go on to win multiple awards including the Arleigh Burke Award for

being the most improved ship in the Pacific and produce nine subsequent submarine commanders. By

embedding goodness in the practices and the people, Santa Fecontinued to win awards long after

    Marquets departure.

Marquets Leader-Leader model and success translates well beyond the submarine. Leaders of any typecan achieve astounding results by applying these principles and following Marquet's practical steps,

highlighted in TURN THE SHIP AROUND! For example:

Releasing proactivity with "I intend to..." Implementing practical steps to change a demoralized culture Using deliberate action to minimize errors and enhance teamwork Eliminating top-down monitoring systems Beginning with the end in mind

Deep under the ocean, of all places, a revolution took place. The success realized by the crew of Santa

Fe, described in TURN THE SHIP AROUND!has profound lessons for how we interact as humans, giving

hope for creating passionate, engaged people across the globe and releasing the powerful intellect in all

    of us.
