Our Special Interest Groups are up and running (see page 4 for a report on their activities), the outings group is busy again organising interesting places for us to visit, and our entries into interclub competitions are ramping up. President’s Report

Hello everyone

There seems to be a lot of activity about the club at the moment. Our Special Interest Groups are up and running (see page 4 for a report on their activities), the outings group is busy again organising interesting places for us to visit, and our entries into interclub competitions are ramping up.

If you’ve got a chance when you’re at NRCH next, have a look at the gallery of photos from our members along the walls leading to the reception area, and in the reception area itself. It’s a great showcase, and some of our best work is on display. We plan to rotate the images on a regular basis, so everyone should get a turn at some stage.

Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 1 June, and will be followed by our regular club night. Please don’t let yourself

be put off by having to sit through a long, boring AGM. We have an admirable precedent at MPS for the quickest possible AGMs – it will all be over within ten minutes so we can get into the interesting business of the night, which is, of course, talking about photography.

Thanks to Sheryle Griffiths, who led one of our most interactive workshops for our mid-May meeting on macro photography, which is a great mystery to some people and a great fascination for others. Sheryle brought a wide range of gadgets for us to experiment with, and Oddette has put some links on our Facebook page to sites to purchase some of the more interesting ones.

Our mid-June workshop will be on studio lighting and still life, which promises to be very interesting and informative. I look forward to seeing you then.

MPS Outings

Watch out for details of the Night Photography Outing to Melbourne City on Friday 24 June. If this night has extreme weather forecast we will move it to Friday 1 July. Coming up later in the year will be an expedition to the Werribee Wetlands and exploration of the back beaches of the Mornington Peninsula.

Special Interest Groups

Audio Visual

The club's Audio Visual SIG (aka the MPS AV SIG) combined with the Urban Landscape SIG for an outing to the Sunbury Lunatic Asylum on Sunday 29 May (stop sniggering, that boy in the back row). The sunny day promised by the Bureau didn't eventuate but it was good to get out and photograph this remarkable campus of Gothic Revival and Art Deco buildings and ponder their grim past.

The AV group has also had a couple of mini workshops on AV production techniques and is currently trying to formalise a meeting date and time. We are also seeking suggestions for a group AV to kick start the group's activities.

Talk to Mike Scully at the Wednesday meeting or call him on 0411 800 850 if you are interested in this demanding but reward-ing photographic medium.

Urban Landscapes

The Urban Landscapes SIG currently has nine members. There were five of us on our first outing on Sunday 29 May to the Caloola site in Sunbury that once housed the Sunbury Lunatic Asylum from 1879 until the late 1980s, and Victoria University from 1992 until 2011. Unfortunately, most of the buildings are vacant nowa-days. We also had a few members from AV SIG come along with us.

The 34 old-style buildings, ranging from blue stone to a more modern brick that once formed the hospital, are scattered through the large grounds. We also found the boiler house, which was a very interesting subject. Many of our photos are going to look fantastic in black and white!

We haven’t decided on our next adventure yet, but your ideas are more than welcome. Our next meeting is on 30 June 2016 at 7:00 pm at the Bendigo Bank in East Ringwood.

Macro

The Macro SIG has met a couple of times, and has discussed many topics such as depth of field, the large range of equipment that is available and optimal camera settings. Our homework from our last meeting was to practise focus stacking. We aim to meet once a month, and plan to entre macro photos in our regular monthly competitions. Our mid-May workshop on macro photography, led by Sheryle Griffiths, reinforced what we had been discussing at our meetings, although it did give us a fair bit of “equipment envy”.

Portraits, Black and White

We will give you updates on the Portraits and B&W SIGs at Club meetings.

Please note that only MPS financial members can take part in the SIG programme.

PHOTO RECIPES

Hello All

This month’s photo recipe is a gorgeous wild life composition by

Nalini Scarfe called Willy Wagtails. I love Nalini’s work. She puts in

so much time and patience into her beautiful images.

Nalini has been promoted to the A grade group this year due to

her fantastic photographic results. Congratulations Nalini.

In recognition of her talent, she was invited to exhibit of her work in

the Warrnambool Scope Gallery. “The Magic of Birds”.

Behind the scenes – exact set up

The photo was taken late in the afternoon. The little birdies were in a very dark area under heavy foliage. A

monopod was used to help reduce camera shake.

Thought process – why it was done this way

It was a very low light situation and had to balance the light with a high ISO.

The birds were also some distance away and didn’t want to scare them off. They were looking like they were

ready for a little siesta. The flash was really to give as fast a shutter speed as possible as it would not have given

her much more light as the birds were too far away.
