hen I agreed to move over to the Alumni Office in September, I thought I knew all about Farrell men. After all, I had been a

student, then a teacher at the school. Over the years I had met thousands of men who had gone through the school and had never run across one that I didn’t like. Since the fall my opinion of all of you has only increased. When Hurricane Sandy hit, Farrell men took to the phones to collect needed supplies, showed up for work parties to help victims of the storm take the first steps toward rebuilding their homes, lit up the school switchboard and Web site with offers of assistance, and reached into their pockets to contribute to the Farrell Sandy Relief Fund, helping to subsidize those affected families who would be hard pressed to meet their son’s tuition bills. When I asked some of our elected officials to show up at their old school to meet and greet potential students and their families at our annual Open House, all I heard in response were resounding yeses. When I called alums Terry Golway, Jim Quinn, Bob Holdman, Mario Mattei and Pete Lembo and asked if they would come back to Farrell to speak with some of our seniors as part of our Legacy Lecture Series, I was only asked when I wanted them to show up. When I stopped in at a number of reunions, including the Streak Reunion honoring the football teams of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, or the Class of ‘67’s “Battle of the Bands” get together, or the Class of ‘72’s party, all I saw and heard was how much Farrell meant – and still means – to almost everyone. I could go on and on, but you get the point: We share a special bond, a loyalty and a love of the school that spans more than a half century. For most of us, Farrell has played a big role in defining who we are today. For a lot of you, though, it’s easy to think of Farrell in a sort of time warp; that things haven’t changed since each of us graduated, that Farrell

exists exactly the way we remember it. In some ways you’re right. Most of the young men – with the exception of the always changing hair styles – are much like we were: eager, bright and talented, interested in all sorts of extra-curricular activities, including sports and looking for all sorts of ways to put something past a teacher or the deans. But in some ways, they’re very different. They come from more varied backgrounds than we did. Their family structure is a lot more complicated. They face challenges many of us never dreamed of confronting. Which is why Farrell needs you, perhaps more than ever. Farrell needs your support, your willingness to come back once in a while, if only to share in some of the good times again. Farrell needs you to show today’s young men what they can become someday. And, of course, if you can, Farrell can use your donations as well. There is still time to contribute to the Annual Fund, and help Monsignor Whalen set up an endowment fund that will help ensure that every worthy student who wants a Farrell education can afford one. Farrell men have always done all of those things in the past, and with your help, we will continue to do all of that for years to come.Because that’s who we are. Because that’s what Farrell made us.

Astronomers announced the discovery of two new double-star planet systems – Kepler-34 and Kepler-35 – at the 219th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas, Jan. 8-12, 2012.

“This work further establishes that such ‘two sun’ planets are not rare exceptions, but may in fact be common, with many millions existing in our galaxy,” said William Welsh of San Diego State University and Kepler participating scientist who led the study. “This discovery broadens the hunting ground for systems that could support life.”

Superior Court Judge, San Diego County, California

Judge Brannigan received his undergraduate degree from St. Peter’s College (NJ). He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Fernando Valley Law School, an M.B.A. from Long Island University, and a Master’s Degree in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University. Judge Brannigan served in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant and a proud member of the 1st Infantry Division, better known as The Big Red One. After serving as a line infantry officer, he finished his service in the JAG Corps as Assistant Judge Advocate. After leaving the military, he became a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he served from 1978-1986. As a member of the New York division, he was assigned to the Organized Crime Unit, finishing his career with the FBI as a specialist in foreign counterintelligence. Following his work with the FBI, Judge Brannigan became a Deputy District Attorney in San Diego County, where he would spend the next three years. For the next fifteen years he served in the United States Attorney’s Office as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of California. In addition to prosecuting a wide range of crimes, he served

as Supervising Attorney for the Border Crimes Section, Criminal Division. In 2004 Judge Brannigan was elected to his first six-year term as Judge of the Superior Court of California, San Diego County. Judge Brannigan is currently in his second term after winning reelection in 2010.

Neil received his B.A. in Literature, with a minor in Dramatic Literature from SUNY Oneonta and his M.F.A. in Theatrical Theatre from Yale University School of Drama. In 2007 he received the Tony Honor Award for Excellence in Theater, presented to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre. The Tony Honors, which were once announced during the Tony Awards broadcast, are now bestowed at a separate ceremony. Earlier this year, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology awarded Neil the Distinguished Achievement Award in Technical Production. Neil has served as Chair of Yale University School of Drama Board of Advisors (‘01-’12) and

is a former faculty member at Yale, Columbia University, and SUNY Purchase. Known as “Broadway’s go-to technical supervisor,” Neil has served as technical supervisor for over 40 Broadway productions, including: A Few Good Men, The Who’s Tommy, Death of a Salesman, Glengary Glen Ross, The Odd Couple, Young Frankenstein, Macbeth, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Newsies, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He is responsible for creating Broadway magic like the flying car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the rolling piano in The Boy From Oz. His firm built the scenery and provided automation for Chicago, The Color Purple, Grease, The Lion King, Mamma Mia! and Monty Python’s Spamalot, among others.

Dr. Marshall holds a B.S. in Biology from St. John’s University, where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. While stationed overseas, Dr. Marshall served as Staff Surgeon, Alpha Surgical Company (front line MASH Unit) during Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2006-2008 Dr. Marshall served as Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at the United States Naval Medical Center in San Diego. His numerous military awards include: The Navy Commendation Medal (awarded for “valorous actions in direct contact with an enemy force”), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Unit Citation with Star.

Michael is a former United States Congressman from New York’s 13th congressional district, serving from 2009 until 2011. He received his B.A. from New York University and his J.D. from New York Law School. In Congress, Michael served on both the Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as Transportation and Infrastructure. He was elected Freshman Whip and also served on the New Democrats’ Financial Services Task Force. Prior to his time in Congress, Michael was a Member of the

New York City Council and worked for the New York State Assembly earlier in his career. Before to being elected to public office, Michael was a partner at the law firm of O’Leary, McMahon & Spero in Staten Island.

Team Scientist. Dr. Welsh obtained his B.S. degree in physics and astronomy from SUNY Stony Brook and earned his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1993, doing his thesis research at the Space Telescope Science Institute. He did his postdoctoral work at Keele University in England, then at the University of Texas, where he became a Research Scientist. His role in the Kepler Mission is to carry out detailed modeling of the short-period planets that Kepler discovers in order to very accurately measure the physical characteristics of the planets and stars, including variations in the times of transits that would indicate the presence of an unseen second planet or moon. Dr. Welsh’s brother, Dr. James Welsh ‘78, was inducted into the Monsignor Farrell Alumni Hall of Fame with the class of 2011 for his pioneering work in the field of cancer research.

Farrell has always been proud of its long list of distinguished alumni. The “Legacy Lecture Series” is designed to bring prominent graduates back to Farrell for lectures, talks and discussions with students as well as the Staten Island community. It also serves to make current students aware of Farrell’s glorious heritage as well as serve as an inspiration to them. The first speaker was noted author, historian and journalist Dr. Terry Golway, who spoke to anumber of senior classes in October, and then hosted a public forum in the school lobby on the history of the New York City Fire Department. Dr. Golway, Class of ’73 and a member of the school’s Hall of Fame, addressed two AP Historyclasses on the battles of American Revolution that took place in the New York area, then discussed hiswriting career with students in a creative writing class. He completed his day-long visit to Farrell with the evening lecture on the FDNY. “Since I’ll never get a chance to deliver a real inaugural address -- let’s be thankful for that -- being the first speaker in Farrell’s Legacy Lecture series was a real honor,” Dr. Golway said. “I had a chance to interact with today’s students during the day, and later on, I met with parents, members of the community, and friends of Farrell. It was great to see the enthusiasm for this fine place that means so much to so many of us.” Dr. Golway is a professor of U.S. History at Kean University in Union, N.J., and is also curator ofthe university’s John T. Kean Center for American History. He has authored more than a dozen books on American and Irish history, including works on President Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Cardinal O’Connor, and histories of the New York Fire Department. A former reporter for the Staten Island

Advance, he served on the New York Times Editorial Board and is a former city editor of the New York Observer. Dr. Golway is a contributor to the American Heritage Magazine and the Boston Globe, and writes occasional pieces for both the Times and the Observer. Jim Quinn, Class of ’70, also a member of the Hall of Fame, discussed his long career as president of Tiffany & Co. with business students in November. In the evening, he repeated his talk with the students for alumni and friends in the lobby. Now retired, Jim joined Tiffany & Co. in 1986 as vice president responsible for corporate sales. He became senior vice president of Tiffany’s corporate division in 1990 and executive vice president in 1992. He was named to Tiffany’s Board of Directors in 1995 and vice chairman in 1998. He served as president of Tiffany from February 2003 to February 2012. Former New York State Supreme Court Judge Robert Holdman, Class of ’82, spoke to the entiresenior class in February about making the right choices in life, a topic which he had discussed with Farrell students in the past. Holdman, now retired from the bench and working as General Counsel North America for West Legend/Rilin Group, told the students they will be faced with a different set of challenges as they leave Farrell and head to college. How they react to those situations, he said, will affect them for the rest of their lives. The series will continue in April, when current New York State Supreme Court Judge Mario Mattei, Class of ’74, will visit the school. Current head football coach at Ball State (Indiana) Pete Lembo, Class of ’88 is scheduled to speak to the students in May.

peter demontreux, Class oF 1998, is a New York City Firefighter assigned to Ladder Company 132 in Brooklyn, one of the busiest companies in the department. For his heroic actions at a fire that occurred on August 30, 2010, he was awarded the highest medal of valor from the FDNY, the James Gordon Bennett medal. He was also recently awarded the Dr. Harry Archer medal, awarded every three years for the most meritorious service or act of heroism or bravery. Below is an account of his actions as reported by the FDNY. “FF Demontreux entered the third-floor window and began his

search. Even with all the modern personal protective equipment, the heat and smoke drove FF Demontreux back to the window. Without hesitation, FF Demontreux turned back into the apartment to continue his search. Crawling on his hands and knees, as quickly as possible, he was able to reach the rear room where he found 51-year-old Clyde Mantany, who was at the window, trying to get some relief from the smoke and heat. Knowing there was no fire escape and it would take time for a

portable ladder to be brought to the rear or initiate a rope rescue from above, FF Demontreux determined the only way out was the window through which he came. Shielding Mr. Mantany as best he could, Pete led him back through the searing heat to the front of the building. As they entered the front room, the heat ignited into flame and engulfed both men. FF Demontreux, now on fire, with survival instincts telling him to get out, decided not to leave Mr. Mantany behind. Through this fully involved room and at extreme personal risk, he pulled the burning victim toward the window. FF Demontreux,

while being burned from theflames all around him, exhibited courage and tenacity by assisting the victim out the window. Both victim and rescuer suffered extensive burns; Mr. Mantany received burns over 50 percent of his body, but is alive.” On Wednesday, February 20,2013, Vice President Joe Biden was joined by Attorney General Eric Holder in honoring Pete at a ceremony at the White House where he received the Medal of Valor. The Medal of Valor is awarded to

public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, to save or protect human life. “We were on fire,” recalled Pete, who suffered burns to his face and back. “I could feel the burns. I could feel my face burning.” Pete was one of 18 awarded Public Safety Officer Medals of Valor, four of them were honored posthumously. “I’m very grateful. It’s a really big deal,” he said. “I’m grateful for the award, and I’m grateful my family will be there when I receive it,” said Pete in a New York Daily News interview. “He’s unselfish and he’s more of a team player,” said FDNY Lieutenant Louis Demontreux, Pete’s older brother and a 1990 Farrell graduate. “He doesn’t really like the attention, actually.” The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest national award for valor by a public safety officer.

thomas J. moran, 1970 Tom Moran is the chairman and CEO of Mutual of America, a Fortune 1000 mutual company ranked on the Forbes 500 list as the tenth-largest mutual life insurance company in the country. Tom was awarded The Seton Award by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) for his “benevolent corporate sponsorship within the Archdiocese of New York and nationally.” The Seton Award, the NCEA’s highest recognition honoring significant contributions to Catholic education, was presented on October 1, 2012 at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. During his acceptance speech, Tom recalled his time at Farrell when he worked with the maintenance staff, joking that he didn’t know who spent more time on the football field, his buddy from the football team Jim Quinn (former President of Tiffany & Co.), or himself when he was in charge of cutting the grass. He also told the audience “I was blessed by having the opportunity to go to Monsignor Farrell High School. From Farrell, I learned so much.” Each recipient also awarded a student of their choice with a scholarship. The Thomas J. Moran Seton Scholar is Farrell junior Sedomo Agosa. “I’m delighted tonight that my scholar is a Monsignor Farrell man. He is part of the maroon and gold,” he added. Tom is a member of the first class inducted into the Monsignor Farrell Alumni Hall of Fame and currently serves on Farrell’s Board of Directors.

John d’amato ‘74 -Head Farrell football coach Jim Bradley ‘88 retired the No. 45 jersey worn by the late John D’Amato at the football awards ceremony this past winter. While a more formal presentation is planned for the fall, many of John’s Farrell teammates and members of his family were on hand to celebrate his memory. A Parade Magazine High School All-American at Farrell, John accepted a full scholarship to Ohio State and finished his collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts where he was a two-time All-Yankee Conference defensive selection. John passed away in 2007 at the age of 52.

stephen lanza ‘75 - Major General in the US Army, recently assumed command of the 7th Infantry Division Headquarters at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.General Lanza previously served as the Army’s Chief of Public Affairs. He commanded the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division during its 2005 combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and later returned to Iraq as the Director, United States Forces – Iraq from 2008-2009. He also deployed in support of Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996-97 and Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

Major General Lanza is a member of the Monsignor Farrell alumni Hall of Fame.

Chef eddie Canlon ‘80 - reigned supreme on the Food Network’s cooking game show Chopped. On the “Happy Turkey Gizzards Day” episode, which aired on November 13, 2012, Eddie defeated several competitors, sealing the victory with his Chocolate Lavash Marscapone Strudel with Dipping Sauces.

statenstrong.com -an organization founded by 1993 classmates John Rossi, Gerard Graci, Nick Carmona, Craig Callow, Ed Cordiano, Phil Pucciarelli, and Mike Burke ‘92, raised funds earmarked for families devastated by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Rossi currently stars as Juice on “Sons of Anarchy.”

Impractical Jokers - Class of 1994 graduates Jim Murray, Joe Gatto, Sal Vulcano, and Brian Quinn, stars of TruTV’s Impractical Jokers, returned to Farrell to film an episode of their hit comedy show, which aired on January 9, 2013. Donned in Farrell senior sweaters, the comedy troupe delighted hundreds of Farrell students (casts as extras) during the skit.

John mascari ‘94 -Was recently named Head Golf Professional at

Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, NJ.John is recognized as one of the Top 50 Instructors in North America- US Kids Junior Golf. While at Canoe Brook Country Club, John supervised one of the largest junior golf programs in the country.

Jose diaz ‘97 -has been named director of Wagner College’s marching band. Diaz directed the Seahawks’ Pep Band from 2008 to 2011. Jose earned a bachelor of science degree in music and a master of science degree in educational administration from the College of Staten Island in 2010. Jose also directed Wagner’s Pep Band from 2008 to 2011.

brother Jeffrey oxx -a former Farrell faculty member, coach, and moderator passed away on November 12, 2012. Brother Oxx dedicated nearly a decade of his life to Farrell in the 1980’s, serving as the Chairman of the Social Studies Department.Following his time at Farrell, Brother taught at Catholic Memorial School in West Roxbury, Massachusetts for 23 years.

Fr. John Comiskey -Farrell’s longest-serving faculty member passed away on June 9, 2012.He was ordained a priest in May of 1960 and began teaching at Farrell in 1964 where he would spend 48 years as part of the faculty.Father was most proud of his development of the Computer Science Department, which had been founded by Brother Robert Harris.
