MARNI N. SEYYID

CURRICULUM VITAE Name and Address:

Marni N. Seyyid, PhD, LCSW-C Lecturer, BSW Program School of Social Work Morgan State University Jenkins Building, Room 424 Baltimore, MD 21251 (443) 885-4375 (office) (443) 885-82842 (fax) [email protected] Research Agenda: To develop a conceptual model of the optimally healthy adolescents of color; to

utilize that model as the basis for a comprehensive “Healthy Relationships” curriculum that focuses on intimate partner violence prevention to be utilized as a companion to middle and high school health programs

To examine attachment patterns of African American men as a path to developing a model for African-centered batterer treatment/prevention; to use that research to facilitate the development and ratification of domestic violence policy that has a holistic and culturally sensitive focus

To develop programming that addresses the needs of Baltimore City’s growing population of delinquent youth

Professional Foci:

To blend technical skill, the understanding that all politics are local, and the

belief that relationships undergird all interactions to advance my research agenda

To use my capacity to increase the capacity of others; this extends to patients/clients in direct practice; to supervisees and colleagues in the context of clinical supervision, training and interdisciplinary teamwork; to partners and managers in the context of program development and management

Teaching Philosophy: Learning is reciprocal—like a Pedagogical Feedback Loop. Students receive

output from me, the professor as well as separate external (environmental) inputs to produce their own outputs, which are received as process inputs by me. I accept feedback from students, incorporating it and making adjustments to subsequent output to students. Freire (1973) calls this “‘liberating education’ which uses a dialogic, problem-posing process stressing equality and mutual respect between teachers as ‘teacher-learners’ and students as ‘learner-teachers.’”

True learning comes with context. In gauging not just where students are (but who they are and where they hope to go), I am able to “pull new data through” information students already have—facilitating the formation of necessary associations within their pre-existing knowledge base, thus expanding it.

Therapeutic Orientation/Expertise: Orientation:

o Therapy is an interactive process and a partnership between therapist and client. It is imperative that mental health professionals acknowledge the effort it takes clients (particularly self-referred clients) to solicit services. In initial sessions with clients who have treated previously with other providers, I recognize and affirm their decision not to give up on the therapeutic process and their healing.

o My primary goal is always to provide a safe space for people to be their authentic selves. So many individuals are not safe in their homes, in their families, their relationships, their workplaces, etc. When people feel safe, they tend to feel comfortable examining their lives and engaging in a process designed to improve their functioning.

Populations/Issues: o Children, families, adolescents, adults o Depression; anxiety; mood/behavior management; relationship difficulties;

life transition; trauma/PTSD

Expertise: o Psychosocial Assessment/Diagnosis o Treatment Planning/Development o Treatment Plan Implementation/Adjustment o Crisis Intervention o Suicide Assessment/Intervention o Clinical Supervision o Social Service Training o Program Evaluation/Development o Community Capacity Building
