Crcy-la-ChapelleCrcy-la-Chapelle bathes in differentbranches of the Grand Morin, livingup to its nickname the little Veniceof Brie. Water enabled the townto develop a wealthy, prosperouseconomy based on wool, cloth, wine and livestock. After the FrenchRevolution it fell on hard times; timber

and tanning were the only activitiesthat still mattered. Old monumentsline narrow lanes; the belfry housesthe cantons oldest bell, which datesfrom 1624; Saint Georges church wasrebuilt in the 18th century but still hasits medieval tower; Quai des Tanneurs

recalls the tanning industry; and theTour aux Saints (Saints Tower)has become an archaeology museum. At the place called la Chapelle-sous-Crcy, Our Lady of the Assumptionchurch dates from 1220. Partiallydestroyed in the Hundred Years War, itwas rebuilt in the Franco-Champenoisstyle. Because of flooding from theneighbouring brook, the collegiatechurch underwent major alterationsin 1676 and 1730 and was raised by
