Township officials suggest school districtadministration building redevelopment

By ZANE CLARKThe Sun

Evesham Township officials believe theEvesham Township School District couldkeeps Evans Elementary School open andsave money elsewhere by instead workingwith the township to turn the district’s ad-ministration building on South Maple Av-enue into a redevelopment or rehabilita-tion project. With declining enrollment across the

district, ETSD officials have started to onceagain float the possibility of closing EvansElementary School to save money – a planto which Mayor Randy Brown is vehement-ly opposed.Brown used the March 8 meeting of the

Evesham Township Council to direct town-ship officials to work with the district inexploring the possibility of turning the dis-trict’s administration building, which al-ready sits within the township’s rehabilita-tion/redevelopment zone, into potentialnew homes or townhouses.“There’s nothing wrong with that prop-

erty to our knowledge,” Brown said, refer-encing a claim made by district officialsthat it would be hard to sell the propertydue to ground contamination issues.Brown said when he first heard the

claim he had township officials investigateany potential issues, and while there areproblems with a piece of district-ownedproperty across the street on Oak Avenue,Brown and officials believe the administra-

tion building itself is clean and prime forredevelopment or rehabilitation.Brown also noted that some townhouses

in Evesham are selling for an average of$375,000 to $400,000 and there could be realvalue to the land.“Value is always tied to what you could

put there,” Brown said.Even with just preliminary investiga-

tions, township manger Tom Czernieckisaid he was able to find several examples ofbuildings such as old school properties orchurches that have been adapted for reuseas residences.Czerniecki said the district might then

be able to move its administrative offices to

Township to work with school district in possible money-saving alternative to closing Evans

Schools throughout the area re-cently celebrated National ReadAcross America, an annual mo-

tivation and awareness day encourag-ing children to read. While the Nation-al Education Association marks theevent on March 2 – the birthday ofbeloved children’s author Dr. Seuss –many schools turn the reading cele-bration into a week-long affair.National Read Across America,

however, goes far beyond March. Theoverarching purpose is to create life-long successful readers. And it’s ourjob to help this purpose come tofruition. Start young. Read to your children

every day. According to the U.S. De-partment of Education, 26 percent of

children who were read to three orfour times in the last week by a familymember recognized all letters of thealphabet. Children who are read to fre-quently also are more likely to countto 20 (or higher), write their own nameand read (or pretend to read). Fill your home with books and mag-

azines. Give your children endless op-tions. The Educational Testing Servicesays that the more types of readingmaterials there are in the home, the

higher students are in reading profi-ciency.Perhaps most importantly, make

reading fun. The U.S. Department ofEducation has found that the percent-age of high school seniors who read“for fun” is in decline, however themore students read for fun on theirown time, the higher their readingscores. Instill this lesson from the be-ginning. Reading is not work; readingis fun.And don’t forget to be a good read-

ing role model. Pick up a book foryourself, too. A child who sees theirparents reading will be more inclinedto read on their own, too.Let’s help create a generation of life-

long readers.

in our opinion

Let’s encourage reading all yearNational Read Across America aims to turn our children into life-long readers

Your thoughtsHow do you encourage reading in yourchildren? What are the best ways to makereading fun? Who are some of your kids’favorite authors? We would love to hearfrom you and share your answers.

some of the free space in one ofits schools, and if that space wasever needed again for classrooms, many boards of education inother towns moved to leasedspace or shared space with theirtownships.“There’s nothing very critical

of them staying in that building,”Czerniecki said.If such a project were to move

forward, the township also be-lieves it could work with theMarlton Recreation Council, whose building sits behind thedistrict’s administration buildingand also falls within the redevel-opment/rehabilitation zone.Together, township officials

said the two properties total

about 4 acres of land.Ultimately, Brown used the dis-

cussion to reiterate his belief thatthe school district’s problem wasoverspending, not enrollment.District enrollment has

dropped from the peak of 5,436students in the 2002-2003 schoolyear to 4,440 students in this cur-rent school year, and is projectedto drop further to 4,080 studentsby the time of the current far-thest projection of the 2020-2021school year. However, Brown noted that the

Evesham School District’s budgetwas $9 million more than that ofneighboring Mt. Laurel, despiteEvesham only having severalhundred more children enrolled.“The closing of a school is not

an excuse because there’s over-spending,” Brown said. “The clos-ing of a school should never andcan never happen in a town likeours.”

Virtua commits to increasecolorectal cancer screeningsVirtua recently announced its

commitment to increase colorec-tal cancer screening in South Jer-sey by joining a national effortwith the American Cancer Socie-ty in the fight against this dis-ease.The national percentage of

adults 50 and older who are up todate with recommended colorec-tal cancer screening has in-creased from 56 percent in 2002 to65 percent in 2010. By focusing ontarget audiences – newly insured, financially challenged, insuredprocrastinators/rationalizers,African Americans and Hispan-ics – Virtua is in a good positionto achieve 80 percent screened forcolorectal cancer by the year 2018.The announcement celebrates

Virtua’s commitment to achieve80 percent by 2018; a shared goalled by the National ColorectalCancer Roundtable. The round-table was started by the Ameri-can Cancer Society and the Cen-ters for Disease Control and Pre-vention in 1997.“Colorectal cancer is a major

public health problem. Adults age50 and older should be regularlyscreened for it. There are severalscreening options, including take

home tests,” said Kristina Thom-son, senior director of hospitalsystems for the American CancerSociety. “Colorectal cancer can beprevented or detected earlythrough appropriate screeningand tens of thousands of livescan be saved if we increasescreening to reach 80 percent by2018."Colorectal cancer is the na-

tion’s third-leading cause of can-cer-related deaths, but it can beprevented. Through proper col-orectal cancer screening, doctorscan find and remove hiddengrowths (called “polyps”) in thecolon, before they become cancer-ous. Removing polyps can pre-vent cancer altogether. For more information about

colorectal cancer screening, please visit www.cancer.org/colon or contact the AmericanCancer Society at 1 (800) 227-2345.For more information about the80 percent by 2018 initiative, visitwww.nccrt.org.

of the program is currently$500,000, of which the townshippays $300,000 and the district pays$200,000.“In their proposed budget it’s

less than three-tenths of 1 per-cent,” Czerniecki said.Regarding the nearly $700,000

figure, Czerniecki said that num-ber was what the district wouldneed to expand the program be-yond its current configurationand hire additional employees.Due to safety concerns, Mayor

Randy Brown said he did notwant to divulge the exact numberof officers currently assigned tothe district and the number ofhours they work. However, he did ask Evesham

Police Chief Christopher Chew ifhe was comfortable with the cur-rent configuration of the pro-gram, to which Chew said he was.“It’s been working great, and

we’ve been getting great feedbackfrom everyone involved includingthe staff, and we have more thanadequate coverage from begin-ning to end throughout the day,all different hours, all over theplace,” Chew said.Czerniecki also said he wanted

to clear up a comment made atone of the meetings where a dis-trict employee spoke negativelyabout the program by indicatingthat an officer assigned to one ofthe schools spent his time playinggames on his phone rather thanprotecting the school.Czerniecki said the township

had an obligation to look into thestatement, but, when officials ap-proached the employee after themeeting, the employee said shehad no direct knowledge of anyactual incident and was onlymaking a generality.“She was just making a gener-

ality, which was extremely unfor-tunate because it happened infront a few hundred residents ofours, so I just wanted it to be onthe record that we looked intothat, there’s no truth to that what-soever, but if there was we would

have addressed it,” Czernieckisaid.Chew used his monthly police

summary at the meeting to alsogive more specifics on what offi-cers were doing during schoolhours. From Dec. 16 through Feb. 26,

Chew said officers assisted inclassroom instruction 28 times, conducted 23 well-being and tru-ancy checks, conducted 17 crimi-nal investigations into incidentssuch as bullying, handled threemotor vehicle violations and con-ducted three security briefings.“That’s just the beginning

where we’re sitting down andlooking at every inch of theschool and working with schoolstaff on how we can improveschool security,” Chew said.Chew said the department is

constantly getting positive feed-back from parents concerning theprogram, and Chew said he be-lieved having police reach chil-dren at a young age will allowthem to grow more comfortablecoming to police about importantissues as they grow older.“It’s part of the culture in the

schools and that’s where I thinkwe’re going to see the value ofthis program for years and yearsto come,” Chew said.
