MARLA’S CORNER MAY 2010 A GOOD FIT FEELS GOOD How many times have you thought about speaking with an Interior Designer and thought that if you did engage in some friendly advice your home wouldn’t look like you anymore? I could never quite understand that concept. We all have our limitations on what we do well. Although we may feel like we can make our homes look just as we would like them to look, it can be very overwhelming. I know I am the worst when I have to make a decision for myself! Some people are very in touch with their own sense of style, while others cringe at the thought of trying to figure out where they belong in the sea of “anything goes” today. Did you ever just walk into a room and it just felt amazing to be there? It just felt right? How about this, did you ever get dressed for a big party and walk into the room feeling like you looked as amazing as the room did? What am I talking about you asked? Three basic principles of good design, or if you will, the RULES! Yes, RULES! I have been known to bend some rules now and again, but these just can’t be broken. Why not? Simple… the room will just not feel right and neither will that perfect outfit. BALANCE, SCALE, AND PROPORTION MUST ALWAYS WORK IN PERFECT HARMONY FOR A CREATION TO BE SUCCESSFUL… ANY CREATION! Did you know that a good designer can meet, spend time, and know what you may like in a short period of time? They listen and observe. Not in any invasive way, but in a careful understanding way so as to insure you have the confidence in them to proceed to create the home or office environment you thought was only in your mind. ECO-FRIENDLY THOUGHT: You may have a plant or two around the house for a nice accent to your home's décor, but the truth is they are doing a lot more for you and your family than you may suspect. As a matter of fact, science tells us you should have as many live plants in your home as possible! Additionally, research shows that houseplants can be surprisingly effective in eliminating V.O.C’s (volatile organic compound) from indoor air as well as reduce stress & boost health. V.O.C’s, released from paints, adhesives; varnishes, solvents, furniture, and clothing can all influence inside air quality and make the air up to 12 times as polluted as outdoor air. Here are just a few plants that are best for purifying your indoor air, The Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata), English Ivy (Hedera helix),

A GOOD FIT FEELS GOOD

How many times have you thought about speaking with an Interior Designer and thought that if you did engage in some friendly advice your home wouldn’t look like you anymore?

The designer needs to pull that idea out of you even if you don’t quite know how to communicate it. This is the fun (or the “rush” if you will) that I know keeps me going. Working with a professional should be a comfortable and enjoyable experience. It can eliminate a great deal of stress associated with designing your home. Hopefully, your relationship will continue long after the professional one. Clients still call me every year when they are ready to do another room or when they are ready to move on. Some call to schedule a friendly lunch or just come by for a friendly cup of coffee and have a laugh or two. So, a GOOD FIT FEELS GOOD and can extend farther than just a home or the perfect outfit.

Here are just a few plants that are best for purifying your indoor air, The Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata), English Ivy (Hedera helix), Waxy Leaved Plant (Hoya carnosa), and Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflorus). Plants adapted to grow in low-light conditions, like many houseplants, can efficiently capture the gases with photosynthesis, and this adaptation has enhanced their ability to soak up CO2 from the air. Plants are an inexpensive and effective way to improve indoor air quality while beautifying your home.- Sarah Mintz Assoc. Designer
