Spotlight on service Page 3 New program Page 4 Marking a milestone! Happy Birthday, Welcome Table! We celebrate our 3rd year of service this October at First United Methodist Church and what a year it has been! Every Thursday night we open our doors and “throw a party” to anyone that comes through our doors. Though we started this project as a feeding ministry, we have evolved into something much more…a ministry about hospitality. Then Christ told the man who had invited him, “ When you invite people for lunch or dinner, don’t invite only your friends, family, other relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they will return the favor. Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the handicapped, the lame, and the blind. Then you will have great blessings because these people cannot pay you back. They have nothing. But God will reward you at the time when all Godly people rise from the death.” Luke 14:12-14 In 2012, the Welcome Table served meals to over 9000 people at FUMC. Over 20,000 people were served at both participating churches. We have seen a twenty percent increase in guests at both churches so far this year. The worth of our volunteers is immeasurable; without their love and dedication to the program and the guests, none of this would be possible. Thank you to all of our wonderful cooks, servers and clean-up crews. All of you make coming to work each day a blessing! Area businesses continue to support our ministry. Thanks to US Foods, The Cupcake Girls, Honey Baked Hams, Wal-Mart, and Kroger for their generous donations. We are very thankful for the scrumptious desserts made by our church members each week. The guests enjoy all of the homemade cakes, pies, and banana puddings! As always, I invite you to come and experience God’s work at hand on Thursday night. You’ll be - and experience - a blessing. Our guests won’t be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned to you. Thank you for allowing me to be your food service coordinator here at First United Methodist. College conversation 1st UMC-Maryville is reaching out to college students with a new small group study. Allie Haskew will lead the study which starts on October 17th in Room 4108 of Gibson Hall on the Maryville College Campus. The study is open to ALL college students (not just the ones at MC). The book Jesus, Bombs, and Ice Cream will be used for the study. Written by activist Shane Claiborne and Ben & Jerry’s founder Ben Cohen, the book examines the role YOU can play in making a more peaceful world become a reality.

In the spirit Good Neighbors of Blount County wants to recognize people in the community who have made significant contributions and who have compassionately served those who are often underserved and unnoticed. 1st UMC’s Suzanne Click and Bill Mueller are both nominees for the Spirit of Good Neighbors Award. One of the biggest church events of the year is coming in a couple of weeks! This year the Maryville Fire and Police Departments will be here promoting safety and children can get a chance to look inside the fire engine. We’re working on other new additions as well, so keep watching and plan on bringing your friends too!

Christmas is coming! Christmas will be here before you know it and we want it to be a great time for families. We are planning an event for December 8th. There will be a little singing, opportunities to get a little crafty, and lots of food. To make this event a success we need a bit of help. If you would be interested in helping to prepare the Christmas crafts for this special family event please give Denise a call at 865-982-1273 or e-mail her at [email protected] . In next week’s “Church Bell” we’ll bring you details about a contest for children to name this event!

Special Ops You’ll soon be seeing a couple of Christmas trees set up throughout the church. These are for Operation Christmas Child. On the branches will be tags with items YOU can provide for this mission. All items are needed by November 10th. After all the items are collected the youth and children will have a “packing party.” You can also buy all the items for a box and fill it yourself. Shipping is $7 for each box.

Trick or treat! This past week during Sunday School many of you got a visit from this “unicorn” (Ada Monroe). She was making the rounds trying to get folks like YOU to sign up to volunteer at the Family Fall Celebration later this month.
