Global success stories

Aurecon provided fast track design and construction consultancy services for Equinix SY3, a co-location data centre in Sydney. Delivered on budget and to deadline, this mission critical facility supports the expanding internet, telecommunications and data markets. Each stage provides co-location space for 1 000 cabinets. Associated building services include transformers, static UPS, diesel generators, chillers, AHU’s and CRAC units.

Extensive space planning was required to optimise use of the existing building envelope, minimise installation costs and provide suitable maintenance access. The design Power Utilisation Effectiveness (PUE) exceeded the client brief by achieving a value of 1.4. The module size of the building services plant ensured the efficient operation of plant and design load and suiting staged load growth. The total design was delivered using Revit, a 3D computer aided design package, to demonstrate coordination and fit of all equipment and guide client understanding and confidence in the solution.

The completion of the Central Terminal Building was vital for the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as the airport served as the key point of entry to and exit from South Africa for all tourists.

Aurecon’s involvement in this large, complex project comprised the civil and structural engineering, including the implementation of a complex glass and aluminium façade system central to the terminal’s visual appeal. Aurecon also provided wet services and mechanical engineering, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

The construction of the terminal was completed with minimum disruption to existing operations by careful sequencing and collaboration with the client and the contractor.

This project has won some of the world’s most coveted industry awards, including the Institute of Structural Engineers (UK), Structural Awards 2009 – Winner for Education or Healthcare Structures. It was also awarded a Silver award in the 2010 Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand awards.

Aurecon’s ground-breaking design used Low Damage Design to allow the building to be used as an administration facility after an earthquake. In this design methodology, large amounts of energy are absorbed by the building rocking and sliding in a controlled manner, limiting the damage that would otherwise occur in a serious earthquake.

Aurecon was engaged to provide consulting services for a multi-storied student accommodation project. Situated on an elevated, steep and exposed site, the project was placed on a fast track programme of construction.

QSTP represents a new master plan concept for science and technology parks worldwide. As a home for technology based companies from around the world and an incubator of start up enterprises, QSTP is set to become a major contributor to the development of Qatar’s economy.

Aurecon undertook the structural, civil, façade, security and fire life safety design for QSTP and worked closely with architects, Woods Bagot, to ensure the successful realisation of this development.

The design is truly original, with application of ingenuity and innovation in order to achieve the client’s vision for the project.

Saadiyat Island is a 27 square kilometre island situated 500 metres off shore from Abu Dhabi. Aurecon was appointed to undertake all of the structural engineering on the project, as well as the design of roads, storm water and bulk earthworks. In addition, we were appointed to undertake geotechnical engineering, as well as maintain a full time construction supervision team onsite during the enabling works and during the main contract.

Aurecon began work on this project in late 2007 and played a key role in overcoming a number of significant engineering challenges to ensure the creation of one of the Middle East’s premier tourist destinations.

The landmark State Theatre of Western Australia, located in the Perth cultural centre, is a new theatre complex comprising a 575 seat auditorium, 200 seat studio theatre and ancillary rehearsal and performance spaces.

Aurecon assisted with the preparation of the business case and site selection study, before providing key sustainable building services design during the second project phase.

During the mechanical services design for the facility, Aurecon engineers used extensive computational fluid dynamics simulations to analyse various air conditioning concepts. The simulations gave a highly accurate selection of displacement ventilation system and high-level jet diffuser options and performance data, which was matched to the building design so that optimal thermal comfort could be delivered to patrons, visitors, staff and performers.

A number of design considerations, specifically aimed at minimising the energy consumption of the building, were also modelled to deliver improved ecologically sustainable outcomes.

We have a client-centric approach that drives our business processes to work in partnership with clients to deliver innovative solutions that add value. While our results and client satisfaction speak for themselves, we are proud to receive international industry recognition of our achievements.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, South Africa Aurecon was part of the structural design team consortium that created this magnificent sports stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The roof design, made to look like a flower with a series of white ‘petals’, has been described as an ‘engineering masterpiece’ by Consulting Engineers South Africa.

Situated on the coast, wind comfort for spectators was a major consideration in the roof design and enclosed walkways were provided on the upper levels. The stadium features good sight lines and limited distances from the seating areas to the pitch.

Freedom Park Museum, South Africa The museum forms part of the Freedom Park heritage development in Tshwane, South Africa. It serves as a centre of remembrance and aims to promote unity, peace and reconciliation in the country. The museum is designed as a group of asymmetrically shaped buildings on different levels.

Aurecon provided an innovative structural steel solution to meet the major construction challenge posed by the architectural concept. The steelwork accommodated the large spans and high volumes required, while being constructed economically and within tight timeframes. The use of structural steel also made it possible to sculpt the complex shapes the architect required, which was not possible using other construction materials.

The Sail @ Marina Bay, Singapore One of the tallest residential buildings in Singapore, The Sail @ Marina Bay consists of two towers of 70 storeys and 63 storeys. Performance glass façades were chosen to maximise views of the new downtown resort. The façade system design needed to achieve both functionality and constructability.

As façade consultants, Aurecon’s solution was a curtain wall system that used a rotating sill trim to allow variation in the vertical tilt of the system, while also enabling manufacturing to be optimised.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Arts and Media Building, New ZealandThis unique building employs Low Damage Design to resist earthquakes, a world-first for a timber building. This revolutionary earthquake technology has been developed by Aurecon’s structural engineers and is based on the latest timber research from the University of Canterbury.

The building incorporates several new timber structural systems for floors, beams and columns, and truly demonstrates the possibilities for using structural timber in multistorey construction.

Wembley Stadium, United KingdomWorking as part of the Mott Stadium Consortium, Aurecon was engaged to undertake the structural engineering of the arch and roof, and provide advice on the initial concept design for electrical, vertical transportation and mechanical services.

With its stunning arch visible from over 20 kilometres, Wembley Stadium stands as a landmark on London’s skyline. The unique toroidally-shaped rectangular roof, hung from a basket weave lattice arch with a span of 315 metres, is an innovative and structurally efficient solution. It provides coverage and unrestricted views for 90 000 spectators and ensures maximum sunlight on the pitch, using seven independently-driven retractable roof panels.

Both fixed and retractable roof panels are supported by very slender and long-span bowstring cables up to 180 metres in length. These are stabilised by an elegant ‘double fish belly’ cable net, which casts minimal shadow on the pitch when the roof panels are open.
