Jazz flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq on February 13 pre-sented a concert at Rappahannock Com-munity College in Warsaw.

After the lunch-time performance, he traveled to the Glenns Campus, where he gave a talk about the popular entertainers who supported the early civil rights move-ment, reported public information officer Tom Martin.

Some of those who took a public stand against the discrimi-natory practices of the times, using their influence to speak to the consciences of the American people, were Leonard Bern-stein, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Harry Bela-fonte, Sidney Poitier, Charlton Heston, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Nina Simone, Charles Mingus and Ray Charles.

The concert and lecture were sponsored by RCC’s Student Activities Office as part of its series of Black History Month presentations.

Twenty Lancaster High School students recently toured Rappahannock Community College’s Kilmarnock Center, the headquarters for the Workforce Development Office.

The tour included a demonstration of the new “Mechatronics” factory logistical training hardware, as well as the training rooms dedi-cated to plumbing and residential electronics. The students asked many perceptive questions about the available training and career oppor-tunities.

“This was fabulous,” said workforce vice president Jason Perry. “We had parents of stu-dents from the tour call us the same day to sign

up for some of our courses.”The group’s next stop was RCC’s Glenns

Campus, where they learned about many of RCC’s career and transfer programs, some of which feature training equipment: a virtual welding machine, robotic patients that allow nursing students to practice their skills and a fully-equipped ambulance for realistic EMT training.

Other presentations covered RCC’s biology and science programs and the resources for academic research at the college library. A rep-resentative of the financial aid office discussed how to pay for college classes.

Rappahannock Community College’s mascot, Squall the Seagull, on February 8 welcomed 20 Lancaster High School students to the Kilmarnock Center, 447 North Main Street, Kilmarnock.

The “Heathsville Historic District” will be the site for Historic Garden Week in the Northern Neck on April 26.

Tour hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., reported event co-chairmen Lynn Hower and Tami McCauley.

Historic Garden Week in the Northern Neck is sponsored by the Garden Club of the Northern Neck and is part of the Garden Club of Virginia’s week-long tour of homes and gardens. Funds raised are used to restore historic gardens around the state.

Established in 1681 and sur-veyed by Benjamin Latrobe, Heathsville has remained the Northumberland County seat for more than 300 years. Its shady courthouse square is a stroll away from a pre-Civil War jail, tavern, church and one of the largest extant assemblages of antebellum buildings in Virginia. Equally as important, Heathsville is a vibrant community based in the 18th century but living in the 21st.

The tour will offer access to five private homes c.1770 to 1933. They showcase how historic homes can be as func-tional today as when they were originally built.

The homes include:

St. Stephen’s Lane, Heaths-ville. Built c.1790, Chicacoan Cottage is one of two identical cottages that were dependen-cies of the original Springfield Plantation, owned by John Heath, one of seven commis-sioners who established the town of Heathsville. It was sold privately for the first time in 1891. Owners are William
