ELA - MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS Year in Review – 2012/2013 ELA 2.0 The focus of our ELA marketing communications efforts is to strengthen the organization’s value proposition for member firms. As ELA has evolved, so too have these initiatives, including: brand identity, social media and the creation of rich content (website, blog, video). In 2013/2014, we anticipate continuing to build on these successes while embracing an entrepreneurial (and, at times, experimental) sprit and an increasingly global outlook. One gauge of our success is the integration of the organization into its member firms’ individual DNA – encompassing everything from inclusion in proposals to advertising to co-branded content. We view this development, which is still in its early stages, as the emergence of “ELA 2.0.” The following summarizes goals and initiatives toward this end: Macro
Continue to broaden ELA’s reach and reputation as the employment law resource for international/multinational businesses.
Reinforce ELA’s position as a global thought leader in all aspects of labor, employment and immigration law.
Carve out industry and practice-specific focus groups for dedicated business development – driven by client demands, individual member leadership and dedicated sponsorship/promotional opportunities.
Micro
Drive meaningful, business development-oriented traffic to the ELA website. Effectively promote and leverage ELA-generated and member-generated content (e.g.,
articles, member honors, member news, press releases, videos, webinars) through social media.
Launch and populate industry/focus group landing pages and blogs, as they evolve. Continue to increase dialogue between member firm marketing and business
development professionals, actively working to identify new opportunities to highlight and strengthen the ELA brand.
Increase the value-add of the Global Employer Handbook. Re-double our efforts to focus on the user-experience of the ELA website. Working to: a)
craft and effectively position content that explains the organization’s members, distinct knowledge and unique offerings; and b) create and enhance current content with a focus on generating increased repeat visits.

INDUSTRY/FOCUS GROUP REPORTS In 2013, ELA launched the Higher Education Council Report – our first industry/focus group blog. The Report, rather than a traditional landing page on the ELA site, has served as the primary public-facing property for the group. Utilizing video content from last year’s annual meeting breakout sessions, we have augmented the work of several active member-bloggers/advocates, who have pushed out a consistent stream of information. The blog start-up, including branding and initial posting and linking, was done behind a private firewall, with the public launch at the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) annual conference in Philadelphia. At the conference and in the ELA’s social media channels, additional marketing materials highlighted the HEC and its blog. This group has provided a template for the launch of additional industry/focus groups. We have reserved a number of unique domain names and can easily create web properties all branded under the ELA Report masthead:
elaconstructionreport.com elagovernmentcontractingreport.com elahospitalityreport.com elanonlaborpracticesreport.com elaretailreport.com elatraditionallaborreport.com elawhistleblowerreport.com elaworkplaceviolencereport.com
One of the unanswered questions is how such properties will be driven, but crucial to any channel will be member “champions” serving as organizational taskmasters and master motivators. WEBINAR PROMOTION NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL – In 2012, we experimented with Google AdWords campaigns to promote ELA webinars globally. With this information in mind and a U.S.-centric webinar on the books, we took a different tack – a one-time buy with the U.S.-based National Law Journal for the publication’s email blast the Daily Alert, inviting readers to attend the July 17 U.S. Supreme Court's 2013 Employment Law Decisions: Key Considerations for Employers webinar.

The ELA display ad (below) appeared in 210,624 emails and was opened nearly 50,000 times. We continue to look for opportunities – both search engine-based (such as Google AdWords) and publication/organization-based (such as the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and the U.K. publication, The Lawyer) to cost-effectively raise ELA’s profile and highlight events, initiatives and offerings. SOCIAL MEDIA The organization’s social media campaign has continued apace and taken on a new dimension of interactivity as the ELA account (@elaglobal) has regularly retweeted ELA member information and disseminated firm news – involving labor and employment and immigration – emailed to the marketing and communications team. In addition, the organization launched a new sub-account for the Higher Education Council Report (@ELAHighEdReport) which publicizes blog posts and other Higher Education Council-specific news. The organization’s LinkedIn group continues to grow as does the Facebook page. We continue to monitor member firms to ensure that all are “followed” and “liked.” In the months ahead, we will look to build out an ELA Google Plus page. Given Google’s overwhelming dominance in search, having a presence on this platform – which the company has put heavy marketing muscle behind – has become essential. MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS INITIATIVES WEEKLY MARKETING MEMO – Identifying an underutilized ELA resource, nearly every week a brief email with tips on how to get the most out of your firm’s ELA membership and encouraging dialogue has been sent to member marketers and business development professionals subscribed to the Marketing Listserv. This has yielded an increased dialog with in-firm marketers and ELA’s marcom team. Results include: firms adding the ELA logo to their websites, firms including reference to ELA in standard proposal language, and sharing of employment and immigration news – which, in turn, is disseminated via the organization’s social media channels.

FRIDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT – Nearing its third anniversary, the Friday Member Spotlight continues to highlight via Facebook and Twitter ELA members around the globe and, when possible, link to and promote their social media properties. We generally see an increase in “local” followers as the Spotlights issue each week. IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS – In addition to meeting at the ELA annual meeting, the marcom team works to proactively connect with members face-to-face. For instance, at the Legal Marketing Association’s annual conference this past April, Blattel Communications was able to meet-up with, among others, member marketers from Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C. and Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP. In addition, Blattel Communications President Traci Stuart is set to moderate a panel that includes Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC attorneys and its lead marketer at the American Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Conference in November. GLOBAL MARKETING AND CREDENTIALING ADVERTISING AND EDITORIAL – A concerted effort is underway to identify and take advantage of opportunities outside the U.S. market to promote the ELA brand in advertisements, advertorials, “mission statement” byline articles and member co-authored content. In the U.S. market, the marcom team developed and placed “Modern Clients Drive Structural Change” in the California ALM publication, The Recorder. The article, authored by Founder and CEO Steve Hirschfeld, serves as a template for mission statement-driven advertorials and advertisements. In addition to the California reach, the piece was syndicated by Texas Lawyer. ORGANIZATIONAL INVOLVEMENT – In a parallel effort to the aforementioned editorial and advertising outreach, a comprehensive effort is underway to identify potential partner organizations – to produce synergistic relationships similar to the one currently enjoyed with the ACC and ACC Europe. An overview of preliminary opportunities and corresponding expenses may be found in your meeting materials. WEBSITE REFINEMENT The ELA website remains one of our largest marketing components and a property that we continually look to improve with respect to the end-user experience. GLOBAL EMPLOYER HANDBOOK – Each month, we compile website statistics (a month-by-month breakdowns follows this executive summary) and the Global Employer Handbook is consistently near the top in terms of visited content. This year, our focus – in concert with the organization’s website developer – is on ensuring that the Global Employer Handbook is presented in a format that can be easily sorted, printed, and produced as a tangible take-away for use both in business development presentations and as a reference manual for clients. This effort, however, is dependent upon member firms ensuring that content in the handbook is up-to-date.

ANTICIPATED 2013-2014 GOALS AND INITIATIVES
Targeting of global advertising, editorial and organizational involvement. Refinement of Global Employer Handbook – with emphasis on sortability and portability
for end users. Strategic growth of industry/focus groups. Continued marketing and communications push for the Higher Education Council. Continued push for increased communication between firm member marketing and
business development and the ELA marketing and communications team. Regular evaluation of webinar advertisement opportunities. Steady ramping-up of social media dialogue with member firms.

ELA WEBSITE ANALYTICS REVIEW September 2012 – August 2013 For the year, the Employment Law Alliance website scored well in nearly every key category: total visitors (up 19 percent); unique visitors (up 22 percent); new visits (up 3 percent); and bounce rate (down 8 percent). The following report details both yearly statistics and breaks down each month. Note the diversity of member firms as referral sources and the wide array of keywords driving users to the site. A key caveat when it comes to website statistics is that month-to-month figures are subject to swings based on real-world conditions (such as holidays and traditional vacation periods). We anticipate ancillary properties, such as the organization’s social media accounts (476 referrals) and the Higher Education Council blog (47 referrals), will continue to take on increased importance as gateways to the primary ELA website.
Visits = Total Visits Unique Visitors = Number of visitors with return visits stripped out. Pageviews = How many pages of the site were viewed in total. Pages/Visit = On average, how many pages a visitor viewed per visit. Avg. Visit Duration = Average time (in minutes) spent on the site. Bounce Rate = Percentage of visitors who entered through one page, surfed no further and then left % New Visits = Percentage of visitors who are new versus the previous month.
