Market Report

This week saw the 86th Louth Annual Christmas Stock Show take place with a good entry of both cattle

and sheep. The entry of 33 show cattle and 72 show lambs were of a tremendously high standard which

was reflected in the trade on the day.

The show committee and auctioneers would like to give thanks to the cattle judge David Coulson, the

sheep judge David Wright, Mick Pickwell for judging the best presentation and stockmanship and all the

shows sponsors for making the day a great success. Credit must go out to all vendors and producers for

the remarkable standard of cattle and sheep on offer but also recognition must go out to our excellent

complement of buyers for supporting the show and the market on a weekly basis.

A number of fund raising activities on the day raised a total of approximately £1795 for the Lincolnshire

Rural Support Network and the Macmillan Nurses. We feel this figure will rise as the donations continue

to trickle forward.

CLEAN CATTLE

The judge, David Coulson, had a very difficult job on his hands due to the really high quality of the cattle

in the show. The show champion was a BrB x heifer from C Goulsbra of Authorpe, weighing 630kgs and

selling for 369.50ppk (£2,328) to A Wright & Sons. The reserve champion was a BB x Steer from D T Todd

weighing 675kgs and selling for 289.50ppk (£1954) to A Wright & Son of Boston.

The Champion unhaltered beast was a BB x steer from T V Davie weighing 621 kgs and selling for

249.50ppk (£1549).

The total prime cattle average price for the 37 prime cattle sold, which includes commercial cattle as well

as the show stock was 233.50ppk the average price per head was £1376. With all steers sold averaging

226.26ppk and heifers averaging 248.42ppk.

For Sale- Second Hand Tag-ie2 EID reader for sheep and cattle ( new price £395 plus vat) A robust hand-held colour touch screen or keypad operated electronic animal ear tag reader, which can record up to 4,000 animals (plus 16,000 linked progeny tags) giving a total storage of 20,000 tags. Tag-ie2 has 4MB of memory, and can store 250 characters of notes and 500 characters of history on each of the 4,000 primary animals, plus numerous management tasks (e.g. weight, scan results, progeny, medication given). Using the data management software ( Farming Matters Software http://www.farm-software.co.uk which will have to be signed up to and paid for separately) you can upload the information onto your PC via the USB cable provided (Zigbee® or Bluetooth® also available), where you can save and arrange it to create the management and movement records you need. Information can be loaded back onto your handset from the PC to enable you to access animal history and update animal notes in the field, as well as mark specific animals for an audible alert for attention. Tag-ie2 can be switched between sheep and cattle terminology to cater for all EID requirements on the farm. Tag-ie handsets read all ISO11785 approved FDX-B and HDX electronic ear tags, microchips and boluses. Zigbee® or Bluetooth® 2.1 models are also available with automatic pairing.
