CHAMBER AMBASSADORSHOW TO

By Dawn Garcia, Pursuit of Excellence

Creating a quality strategic planning process is key to business growth and sustainability, by evaluating industry trends, competitor and regional market trends, and internal business core competencies to create strategic priorities for the future – a vision of the desired future state. Every business should have a clear direction and plan for the future, to be carried out by the leadership team or owners. Otherwise, the famous quote of Winston Churchill comes to mind “He who fails to plan is planning to fail.”

Here are some quick tips to guide you in setting your successful plan to achieve your vision:

•Begin with a clear understanding of your mission, vision, values, and core competencies (your unique organizational strengths that are hard for competitors to copy)

•Understand your market and industry by reviewing data trends objectively

•Get stakeholder input on what they would like to see your business achieve

•Analyze your data findings and stakeholder input through tools that can identify your strategic priorities – the direction that must be achieved in the next 3-5 years

•Create strategic objectives to achieve your priorities, and cascade these to an annual action planning cycle, with timelines and specific role accountabilities

Generally, a strategic plan’s priorities should extend for 3-5 years, and be evaluated annually for achievement and updates needed for the following year, based on market changes.
