Plumbing Systems and Design magazine turned a profit! For the first time since its inception, PS&D has turned a small profit for the fiscal year July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. This is a great achievement for a relatively new magazine. Keep spreading the word whenever you speak to a manufacturer or a manufacturer’s representative.

There will also be an all day CPD review class on Saturday of the Symposium. The instructor for the review class will be Joe Ficek, CPD, from the Chicago Chapter.

Legislative - Eric LemanI attended an interesting meeting a couple of weeks

ago. Seems that the new ASSE 1070 Standards for point-of-use mixing valves in Section 607.1 have caused some confusion in their proper application. To assist in getting the correct word out to all the Plumbing Inspectors around the State, Ralph Reeb has issued a Code Clarification Document on the topic. Basically, the clarification is that ASSE 1070 mixing valves can serve single or multiple fixtures. Word on the street is that some inspectors around the State have been ordering in ASSE 1070 devices for every faucet where shown, but that’s not what the standard says. The attached memo from The Division of Industrial Compliance – Plumbing Section should clarify that issue.

A by-product of that meeting was the discussion that arose when trying to establish just what is meant by “public hand-washing facilities” as used in Section 607.1. I think we all have been through the discussion with respect to what is considered public and private. But our discussion really centered on the question of “In the context of the established definition for “Public or Public Utilization” as defined in Chapter 2, what fixtures really are installed “for public use”? While the toilet rooms off the lobby are certainly intended for “public use”, can the same be said for the coffee bar sink just around the corner, in the office cubicle area? Or the sink in a classroom of a public school? Or the sink in the . . . well, you get the idea. Certainly,

someone could use that fixture to wash his or her hands. What came out of this discussion was that while we

have a definition for “Public or Public Utilization”, there is no definition to further clarify “public hand-washing facilities” as used in 607.1. While I certainly have an opinion on whether or not we need another definition, the consensus was that we might need one to clarify the issue.

To that end, here is our challenge – Provide a definition of “public hand-washing facilities” that can be submitted to the ICC for inclusion in future codes. Email or otherwise send me your entry by the end of September and we will see where that takes us. I already have one entry – thank you – you know who you are.

Have you ever run into an issue in the City of Columbus with attempting to place an interior grease trap into a facility, only to be told that the City prohibits the installation of them? Since December 7, 2005, that has been a City Code requirement. They will only allow exterior grease interceptors to be installed within the City. But wait . . . there’s more. As is usually the case, this code mandate can be appealed. As I recently found, the process was simple and painless.

Listed below is the verbiage of Section 1145.05 that requires an exterior grease trap.

Columbus City Code 1145.05 SEWER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS

(C) Whenever a plumbing permit is required by Columbus City Code Chapter 4113, and grease separation is required, the applicant shall install grease interceptor(s) immediately outside of the building where there is easy access for cleaning. If the applicant demonstrates that installation of an outside interceptor is impractical to the satisfaction of the City, installation of grease trap(s) shall conform to all applicable regulations.

The variance process was quick and easy – I prepared, submitted and received written approval for my variance all in the same business day a few weeks ago. Maybe you’ve already been through this process, maybe you’ve just butted heads with the City in the past and wondered why you can’t do it the same way as the State does it. If you want to know more, email me ([email protected]). Rather than take up space in this newsletter edition with all the paperwork, I will email back to you the paperwork that will allow it all to happen for you.

VP Membership - Chad DuplerI have a lot of new things to report. But before

I get to that, I should go over some old news that needs to be covered. This year’s golf outing was a rousing success. A “Royal Flush” as it were. Once again the weather was great, the Links at Echo Springs was fabulous and you folks turned out and supported your local chapter like nobody’s business. This year’s low foursome was the group sponsored by Nibco of Rick Daugherty, Matt McGee, Steve Troutman and Dennis Capehart. Their score of 6 netted them a free round of golf compliments of The Links at Echo Springs.

As always, our success rested on the shoulders of our gracious sponsors. This year’s major sponsors were Rep Source and Bradley mixing valves, HAWA Incorporated, Omar McDowell, Nibco, BWA South, Bruner Corporation, Preferred Sales with Gas Tite Piping & Bradford White Water Heaters, Trombold Equipment, Disney McLane, Whitfill-McCarthy, and Industrial Sales. We would also like to thank, once again, everyone who stepped up and sponsored a hole this year. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the gentlemen who helped make this all possible. If it were not for their time and effort this outing would be pretty lame. So please say thank you to Mark Simpson,

Don Konkle, Tom Jones, Dave Madsen, and Tim Gleich at our next lunch meeting.

In membership news, we have two new members. Both are with Heapy Engineering. Both were sponsored by Eric Leman. Way to go Eric! Let’s welcome Andy Norman and Tony Furst to our family. That helps bring our current membership to 67 members. This also gets Eric a couple free lunch meetings on the house. Oh, yeah.

We also have a new “Full” member in our midst. Jason Hopkins of Roger Fields and Associates has qualified himself to become a full member by his many years of service to not only our chapter but also the society. Congratulations Jason!

Remember, the membership contest concludes at September’s lunch meeting. So sponsor a new member or two and get a free lunch or two. You still have time. When you do, make sure you use the NEW ASPE membership application form. You can download it off the web or contact me and I’ll get you one.

See you at the September meeting.
