Background program report codes assigned to $:REMOTE are moved to the Foreground Batch Output .Library via the Bus Adaptor.

BST Jobid prints a list of reports residing in the Batch Output Library that can be listed on low, medium or high speed terminals.

After user prints the reports, the job should be purged from the Batch Output Library. Users are not charged for occupying Batch Output Library and the jobs are automatically purged after 32 hours. However, it is good housekeeping practice to remote com­pleted jobs.

VI. Files Accessed in Background

In the course of execution of the OGP program, information may be read from files or written to files. Three types of files may be accessed:

1. Temporary disc files

Data may be written and subsequently read in the same activity.. Or, data may be wr-itten in one activity and later on read in a subsequent activity within the sam~ job execution. After the job bas terminated, the files are released to the system.

Permanent disc files

Data may be written on a permanent disc file and subsequently accessed in the same activity, in a later activity or in a later job. The data resides in Background, .in a permanent file until purged by the user.

There is a Background storage charge of $0.15 per Data Storage Unit (DSU) per month. A Data Storage Unit is defined as 320 words. Any portion of a DSU used for storage is charged at tbe full DSU rate.

A. Before user may access a permanent disc file, user must first create file space.

A load model file requires about 3 blocks per year. A generation model file requires about 15 blocks per each record defined in generation model.

The BCREATE directive may be included as part of the Background directives of a Foreground data file, or BCREATE may be entered interactively.

3. Magnetic tapes

Data may be written on a magnetic tape and subsequently accessed in the same activity, in a later activity or in a later job.

The magnetic tape may be a scratch tape and released to the system at the end of the job. Or, the magnetic tape may be one that is assigned to the user and kept in storage in the Mark III Tape Library.

Magnetic t~pes assigned to users may be twro different types:

A. Unsecured Tapes

Initially this was a scratch tape. At the end of a Background job activity, user, via a control card, requested that the tape be dismounted and stored in Tape Library for subsequent access. Tape security consists of an external check.

B. Secured Tape

User must contact his local Mark III ISBD representative and request that a secured tape be assigned to him. Tape security consists of a software check to insure that user is permitted access to the tape.

A user may release a MARK III magnetic tape in one of two ways:

Tapes may be released by initialing the individual tape numbers to be released and returning the inventory carbon copy to address listed at end of tape inventory report.

User may submit a user created release form which lists Background magnetic tapes to be released.

Please use either Method 1 or Method 2. It creates serious problems at Brook Park if a user submits a user release form and subsequently indicates the release of the same magnetic tape by initialing the tape inventory form.

VII. Namelist Input

When a READ statement refers to a NAMELIST name, the designated input: device is readied and input of data is begun.

The first input data record is searched for a $ immediately fol­lowed by the NAMELIST name, immediately followed by a comma, equal, or one or more blank characters. If the search fails, additional records are examined consecutively until there is a successful match or end-of-file.

When a successful match is made of the NAMELIST name on a data record and the NAMELIST name referred to in a READ statement, data items are converted and placed in storage. Data items are read and converted until the end of a set of data is encountered. The end of a set of data is a $.

Currently, data may be keyed in columns 1 through 72. The system will ignore data in columns 73-80.

Data items must be separated by commas, i.e. each piece of data (including last piece of data) must be followed by a comma.

To indicate the end of a set of data, use $ instead of a comma following last data item in set.

Warning **''* Do not indicate end of set of data by keying in a single $ in column 1 or 2. Software will interpret a single $ in column 1 or 2 as a con.trol card. The result may cause program to loop until processor limits are exhausted.

X Remote Media Service (RMS)

RMS is an auxiliary offering of MARK III Service that enables various types of media transfers.

OGP users who do not have high speed printer capability on site may wish to ·have OGP bulk output printed at an ISBD Network Center nearest user. This printed output is then mailed to user.

Before user may request RMS Service, user must first create an RMS address file. Subsequently, other addresses may be added to thi.s address file.

Once an address file has been created, user may

RMS print order requires that output reside in the Batch Output Library in Foreground. This means that user must assign $ REMOTE to all files to be printed.

Priority Processins

Users will have the option of specifying EXPRESS, DEFERRED or NORMAL processing at corresponding CRU price premiums or reductions.

A. EXPRESS priority - if specified, and if the job is completed within the job turnaround time of 15 minutes per 0.25 CRU'S required for processing of the job, CRU charges for the job will be 2.0 times the CRU charges which would otherwise apply.

B. NORMAL priority - regular applicable CRU charge rates will apply to normal priority jobs, but if the processing of the job requires no more than 2 CRU' S and is not completed within the job turnarou~d time of 2 hours, then the CRU charge rate will be reduced to 0.75 times the regular rate.

C. DEFERRED priority - if specified, scheduled job turnaround time will be 24 hours and usage will be deemed to have occurred during non prime time hours regardless of when processing is actually performed. CRU charges for the job will be 0.75 times the CRU charges which would otherwise have been applicable.

The Priority Processing options which are currently in effect will continue to apply for users of the Background Service DIRECT INTERFACE. The current method of requesting priority will be ignored under the new priority system. The new format is:

BACK FILENAME;PRIORITY(CLASS)

Where priot•ity or PRI is the new option, and class can be:

E or EXPRESS N or NORMAL D or DEFERRED

If no priority service is requested, the normal priority will be assigned •
