About me

Referencing is an important skill in HE. In Greenwich, we direct students to Harvard

or Parenthetical referencing. Attributed to Edward Laurens Mark (1881:

194). But…. there is no single Harvard,

◦ Dialects only. Harvard, according to Greenwich is defined in

the resources we point students towards.

So what is Harvard?

Since Office 2007™, referencing has been built in to *.docx files.

By default it offers APA and some Harvards,◦ Harvard AGPS, Harvard Anglia, Harvard Leeds.

None are the same as described in the Greenwich resources.

Creates some confusion among students.

Seen as highly important in many industries. Greenwich wants to be in the top 50 UK HEIs. A Harvard Greenwich brand might help to

strengthen our identity. I examined the way the referencing worked –

a fairly simple XML-type document. So, I rewrote & edited a similar Harvard to

mimic the student guide for Greenwich students.

Branding

Harvard Greenwich (HG) – a plugin for Office 2007 and onwards, implemented in all UoG PCs since Xmas 2014.

The HG plugin automatically formats references and citations to the style indicated in the UoG referencing guide.

HG has the potential to bring together and simplify teaching of referencing, especially at undergraduate level.

Let us look at HG on Word™ on this PC…

Currently the HG style file resides on UoG PCs only but may be installed on any PC in a few moments, if you have the rights to edit the Word™ application directories.

If you try to display a document in Word with references formatted using HG on a PC without the plugin, the output appears broken.

Can be “repaired” by choosing an existing referencing style on the PC (I use APA).

Can be permanently captured by saving the file as an Adobe document (pdf) or early Word document (*.doc).

Caveat

A project exists for EndNote to brand this too.

More suited to postgraduate study. Not particularly difficult to create an output

style for Harvard Greenwich in EndNote.

So how can you get and run the Harvard Greenwich plugin?

Now put this file in your style directory for MS Office, most probably:

C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Bibliography\StyleRestart Word.
