Many adults make some type of New Year’s resolutions. Then two weeks later, most realize that they haven’t followed through. Kids are no different. Why not make this the year that your child learns how to achieve the goals he/she sets for themselves? When your child sets a goal, encourage them to choose one they can reach in a short time frame. Then, help them follow four steps for achieving the goal: 1. State the goal. “My goal is to learn my multiplication facts.” She should write it down and post it where she will see it. 2. Plan how to meet the goal. “I will make flash cards and study them for 15 minutes every night. I will ask Dad to quiz me on Fridays.” 3. Talk about the goal with others. This builds commitment to the goal. Your child should tell her teacher what she plans to do. 4. Do each step in the plan, one at a time. If problems come up, talk about possible solutions. Perhaps she is too tired after doing her homework each night to review her flash cards. Maybe she could study them in the mornings while she eats breakfast instead. Don’t forget to praise your child for her effort each step of the way. “I am proud of you for studying your multiplication facts this morning.” And when she achieves her goal, celebrate the way her hard work paid off! January 22, 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians:

From the Principal

January is a time for taking stock and setting goals. “My goal is to learn my multiplication facts.” She should write it down and post

it where she will see it. 2. Plan how to meet the goal. “I will make flash cards and study them for 15 minutes every night.

I will ask Dad to quiz me on Fridays.” 3. Talk about the goal with others. This builds commitment to the goal. Your child should tell her

teacher what she plans to do. 4. Do each step in the plan, one at a time. If problems come up, talk about possible solutions. Perhaps

she is too tired after doing her homework each night to review her flash cards. Maybe she could study them in the mornings while she eats breakfast instead.

Don’t forget to praise your child for her effort each step of the way. “I am proud of you for studying your multiplication facts this morning.” And when she achieves her goal, celebrate the way her hard work paid off!

For the Young Writers’ contest, elementary school students had to create a creature of their own invention, and then write a story about it using just 100 words. The purpose at Young Writers is to encourage creativity in children and to inspire a love of the written word. Not only have these young authors created imaginative and inventive creatures, they’ve also crafted wonderful tales to showcase their creations. These stories are brimming with inspiration and cover a wide range of themes and emotions – from fun to fear and back again!

Reading opens the door to information and enjoyment It’s important to help your child understand the value of reading and how it connects to so many things in her life and in the world. Reading is essential for:

Obtaining information. People learn about rules, directions, facts and more. Have your childread a recipe to you as you cook. Read a manual aloud that explains how to put somethingtogether. Challenge him/her to read to find answers to questions, such as “How can I get a grassstain out of your shirt?”

Communication. Talk with your child about the ways reading and writing help youcommunicate with others—through mail, email, texts and notes. Then suggest that your childexchange letters with a friend. Or they could write an email to a local politician about an issuethat’s important to them.

Pleasure. Help your child plan a relaxing end-of-the-day reading routine. And be sure to helpthem find books that will give them a good laugh or take them on an exciting adventure.

Updates from the Social Studies Department – Grades 6, 7 and 8 by Mr. Michael McCue

In Sixth Grade, the students are continuing to learn how to think and write like historians. We just concluded learning about Ancient China. In addition to the content we created a Dynasty Organizer which essentially was a research paper in a much more condensed format. The students gathered information on the various dynasties, compiled it on a one-page document that had four quadrants, one for each dynasty respectfully. They organized each quadrant in chronological order and each box had all the information of a six-sentence paragraph but with far fewer words. In essence, they became familiar with the research, organizing, and presenting information process without the strain of writing a research paper.

They are currently learning about Ancient India in addition to some cross-curriculum content with science, specifically plate-tectonics. We are observing how geography and climate affect how people interact with their environment and the effects upon their culture. Along with culture, we will learn about two of the main religions throughout the world, Hinduism and Buddhism. Could there be any similarities to our Catholic religion and beliefs?

In Seventh Grade, the students are continuing to learn about Colonial America as well as learning various reading and note-taking strategies. This is already paying dividends inside and outside of the social studies classroom. We have been blending strategies such as Reading for Meaning, SQ3R, and various pre-writing strategies so we can be more effective readers, learners and writers. We know that there is still more growth to be had and we are confident that through practice prior to high school, they will be confident, successful, independent learners.

In Eighth Grade, we are continuing to practice our reading and writing strategies following the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project outline. Content wise, they finished learning about the Age of Reform. On the hundredth anniversary of the 19th Amendment we learned how hard fought and determined the suffragist were in their nearly one-hundred-year struggle for an equal say. Furthermore, in true transcendentalist form, students were encouraged to pick a reformer on whom to do a biography. The biography was conventional in the sense that the person’s life experience was covered. The students also picked various quotes from the person that resonated with them personally. They then presented an informative Google slide presentation for their class to learn from.

STEM Updates from Ms. Evans

In Second Grade, students will investigate and classify different kinds of materials by observable properties, including color, texture, and heat conduction. After analyzing data from materials tested, the students will use a step-by-step design process to create an insulating cover for an ice pop to prevent melting.

Week of January 20th - Virtue of Self-Control Self-Control

Joyful mastery over one’s passions and desires. ~

Dear Jesus, Thank You for all the desires You have

given me, because they remind me of the desire in my heart that only You can fill! Help me to control my tongue when I am supposed to be silent; my hands when I

am supposed to keep them to myself; my eyes when I am supposed to be focused on a particular person or thing; and my ears to listen to only those things I am

supposed to hear.

Today is the Day…To Know What Counts Not everything that counts can be counted. There is no intrinsic virtue to being poor and struggling; on the other hand, neither is being wealthy a sure sign of God’s blessing. God’s concern is your heart: He is more interested in developing character in your life than in enlarging your bank account. The most important thing, now and always, is to love God with all your heart and to pass those values on to those you influence. Having money is not the issue. Loving God is.

Money was made not to command our will, But all our lawful pleasures to fulfill.

-Abraham Cowley
