The “Mark” Of This Gospel

Larry Cline - Hardin Valley Church of Christ - 6/1/2014

At the right time and right place it’s

amazing what a message can do.

I. The Man’s Times:

Who is Mark? All the testimony of the church

fathers points to John Mark.

Papias, "Mark who became Peter's interpreter wrote accurately though not in order all the things he

remembered that were both said or done by the Lord. For he had never heard the Lord nor been one of his followers but afterwards as I said, he followed Peter

who use to compose his discourses with a view to the needs of his hearers, but not as though he were

drawing up a connected account of the Lord's sayings, Mark made no mistake in recording some things just as

he remembered them. For he was careful of this one thing, to omit none of the things he had heard and

to make no untrue statements therein."

How did Mark end up recording Peter’s sermons? Only Luke is with me. Pick up Mark and

bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service. (II Timothy 4:11)

She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and [so does] my son, Mark (I Peter 5:13)

Why were Peter and John so fond of each other? Maybe because both knew the

power of a second chance.

Where was it written? Rome. More importantly with a

Roman audience in mind.

Old Testament text Roman mindset – love of action

Mark writes a fast paced gospel written like an eager child telling a story. When did he write it?

65-70 A.D. during Nero’s reign.

Why did he write it? Because Peter was dead or dying.

13I consider it right, as long as I am in this [earthly] dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14knowing that the laying aside of my [earthly] dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. (II Peter 1:13-15)

Because the church was being persecuted… often called the gospel of martyrs.

Because discovering Jesus is the beginning of everything God wants for our lives.

II. The Book’s Theme: Two Keys To Understanding The Book

Mark 10:41-45 (Structural)41Hearing [this], the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. 42Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them;

and their great men exercise authority over them. 43But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Mark 8:27-35 (Theological)27Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say that I am?"

28They told Him, saying, "John the Baptist; and others [say] Elijah; but others, one of the prophets." 29And He [continued] by questioning them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." 30And He warned them to tell no one about Him. 31And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must

suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, the chief priests and the scribes, 32And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."

34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.”

Two Questions:1. Who is Jesus?

Mark wants you to ask the question and deal with the answer!

When people are burning your friends and throwing your babies to dogs you better decide who Jesus is.

2. What is discipleship? The two questions are connected –

the way you follow depends on the kind of Jesus you see.

Mark will show you over and over a suffering Jesus and a serving Jesus.

III. The Lord’s Terms Three things we have to do to get our

gospel in shape.1. Decide who He is.2. Tell what He does!3. Go where He goes… to a cross!
