This portfolio is the result of many years experience in the field of engineering, design, production management and most of all, my utmost love and passion for design and the reward of seeing and touching the final product.

The projects displayed in this portfolio are designed with the availability of materials and recourses in mind. Due to boundaries regarding intellectual property issues, I will not be showcasing any work done by me for current and / or previ-ous companies.

My collection of furniture designs, one of my favourite past times, embodies the perfect fusion of modern industrial, clas-sic styles and a touch of Asian mystique. I love modernising classic designs by using contemporary materials. Sheet metal and the versatility thereof is one of my favourite mediums turning it into three dimensional structures and objects. I keep a fine balance in the warmth of my designs by combining exotic wood, glass in various forms and shiny metals such as aluminium and stainless steel.

Meticulous design skills and state of the art 2D and 3D drafting packages justify the outcome of my designs such as this, a modern version of the classic Cabriole leg, ready for production to become the sup-port structures of tables and chairs.

I love the idea of taking classic designs and modernising it. This is my version of the time-less classic, The Cabriole leg, incorporated in a simplistic but contemporary table.

This triangular shaped liquor cabinet was designed as a free standing unit. The lid opens 90° and serves as a pouring top.

The triangular opening is a stacking area for wine bottles.

Opening the lid activates a strip of LED light fittings inside the cabinet for practical reasons, as well as add-ing ambiance lighting up the glass bottles and glasses inside the cabi-net.

Contemporary floating dressing table with a fold-away mirror. The mate-rial - supawood 20mm thick sheets coated in a wood primer and to be spray-painted and polished in a high gloss white finish.

The challenge was making a custom hinge for the mirror unit on the top that would be discreet, but the visible parts would be aesthetically pleas-ing. Another challenge was that the mounting brackets would carry not only the unit, but also the weight of someone leaning on or against it. Another aspect to have kept in mind was sagging over time and therefore, an adjustable screw was placed on the tip of the support arm. This could then be set to level the unit in due time when sagging occurred.

What triggered the design behind this table was the Pa Kua (Bagua) diagrams used in Taoist cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality, seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. Each consists of three lines, each line either “broken” or “un-broken,” representing yin or yang, respectively. Due to their tripartite structure, they are often referred to as “trigrams” in English.

The trigrams are related to the five elements of wu xing, used by feng shui practitioners and in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Those five elements are metal, fire, earth, wood, and water. The Water (Kan) and Fire (Li) trigrams correspond directly with the Water and Fire elements. The element of Earth corresponds with both the trigrams of Earth (Kun) and Mountain (Gen). The element of Wood corresponds with the trigrams of Wind (Xun) (as a gentle but inexorable force that can erode and penetrate stone) and Thunder (Zhen). The element of Metal corresponds with the trigrams of Heaven (Qian) and Lake (Dui).

Solid exotic wood was used for the top of this table. The trigrams, mentioned earlier, were cut out of 6mm glass, sandblasted and inlaid into the solid wooden top of the table like mozaic. The table top was then trimmed with 32mm solid wooden trimming matching the inner. A step was then routered into the inner edge where the final 10mm glass top was placed into. The legs were based on a classic Chinese design and were made from ribbed, lazer cut stainless steel sheeting, spaced equally and mounted underneath.

I have no idea what triggered the tribal design for this table / server. It was manu-factured from 3mm stainless steel sheet-ing in a satin finish with a 10mm glass top. The labour in-volved in assembling this table was kept to a minimum using only one tool, an allen key. No welding was re-quired.

I manufactured three (3) different kinds of spacers, used to sandwich the main structure as well as the legs together.

I based my design for this contem-porary coffee table on the ancient Chinese styles seen in the images “A” and “B” above. There is no welding on the metal parts. Assembly was done using only one tool with the minimal amount of time.

I designed two versions of this table. The one, lazer cutting the pattern out of the stainless steel. The other, a wooden inset was inlaid into both the top and bottom section. The pattern was routered into the solid wooden discs using a computerised CNC rout-er.

This contemporary industrial looking bar counter can be lit up from the inside with colour changing LED’s creating an ambience for a night club or exclusive cocktail bar.

The structure was made using 3mm brushed stainless steel sheeting lasercut to the desired shape. Slots for the sand blasted glass panelling were incorporated into the design simplifying the assembly and replacing thereof, in case of breakage or accidental damage. A solid birdseye maple top, sealed with a hard-wearing polyurethane was placed on the structure adding warmth to the unit. Shelving was placed inside the unit providing packing space for liquor bottles and glasses.

This dimmable free stand-ing contemporary lamp, using five circular fluores-cent lamps I’ve designed as a feature light. The bal-lasts and other controls are completely invisible and re-lamping is really simple.

Rectangular aluminium tubing was used as the basis and framework of this item. Standard aluminium square tubing was used for the covers of the lamphold-ers. Thin powder-coated mild steel sheeting was bent in a u-channel and used to house the ballasts and all the wiring.

This frosted glass chandelier was designed using various items found lying around the workshop. The centre structure housing eight 10watt low voltage lamps, is part aluminium tube cut to size and the covers were spun from 1,6mm mild steel sheeting to fit the tube.

Instead of powder-coating this unit, it was left in a brushed finish and coated only with a clear laquer for effect.

This serviette holder is part of a range of very simplistic homeware items I’ve based on the K.I.S.S. principle. An acronym for the design principle articulated by Kelly Johnson, “Keep it simple, Stupid”! The KISS principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complex, therefore simplicity should be a key goal in design and un-necessary complexity should be avoided.

The principle most likely finds its origins in similar concepts, such as Oc-cam’s razor, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistica-tion”, Mies Van Der Rohe’s “Less is more”, or Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s “It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”. Colin Chapman, the founder of Lotus Cars, urged his designers to “Simplify, and add lightness”.

I punched this item from 316 grade 1,6mm stainless steel sheeting. Sup-port slots were strategically placed so that this item can be hand-bent therefore no machines or bend presses were needed creating the form.

This low cost recessed metal halide light fitting that can be assembled with the least amount of effort and tools.

This fitting was designed to be held together with only one circular spring. A tube was later added to prevent light from splashing onto the ceiling and also preventing dust from entering the fitting, ending up between the glass and the re-flector.

Breastplates were originally worn by native American tribes as ar-mour, for protection in both bat-tle and hunting. Plains indians were famous for the individual workmanship that went into a breastplate. Many believed that, by wearing one made in a specific fashion, a spiritual advantage was obtained during hunting and bat-tles. Breastplates are hand craft-ed from what is called hairpipe beads. These long bone beads are strung on strong cord with spacer beads and leather between them.

This item was inspired by the Navajo and other American Indian tribes. Instead of using hair pipe beads, I’ve used porcupine quills. I’ve ended off both sides with a cus-tom made silver cap preventing moisture from seeping in. Silver was also used for the centre and side supports. I finished the design off by combining all the above parts with turquoise Sharovski crystal beads and a swiss blue topaz stone.

Knobkierrie, also spelled knobkerrie, knop-kierie or knobkerry, are African clubs used mainly in Southern and Eastern Africa. Typi-cally they have a large knob at one end and can be used for throwing at animals in hunt-ing or for clubbing an enemy’s head. This knob is carved out of a tree trunk and the shaft is simply the branch that protruded from the tree at that point. The name is derived from the Afrikaans word “knop”, meaning knot or ball and the word “kierie”, meaning cane or walking stick. The name has been extended to similar weapons used by the natives of Australia, the Pacific islands and other places.Knobkierries were an indispensable weapon of war, particularly among southern Nguni tribes such as the Zulu and the Xhosa.During the apartheid era in South Africa they were often carried and used by pro-testers.

Knobkierries are still widely carried, espe-cially in rural areas. The weapon is employed at close quarters, or as a missile, and in time of peace may serve as a walking-stick.The head, or knob, is often ornately carved with faces or shapes that have symbolic meaning. The knobkierieitself serves this function in the crest of the 2000 new coat of Arms of South Africa and also features onthe Order of Mendi for Bravery.

My contemporary version of this “knobkierie” or walking stick was inspired by a surgical stainless steel hip replacement implant I once saw. I was intrigued by the shape and engi-neering behind this item and decided to use the shape to design my walking stick around.

My design is made from layers of anodised aluminium sheeting and the ball from exotic wood of choice. The height can be adjusted for comfort.

This item could be used for general hiking purposes as well as support for minor leg injuries.
